Taking Care Of Digital Efforts: A Multiplanar View Of Project Afterlives, Robin Camille Davis Jan 2015

Taking Care Of Digital Efforts: A Multiplanar View Of Project Afterlives, Robin Camille Davis

Publications and Research

In this presentation, given at the 2015 MLA Convention, I examine the status of online digital humanities projects 10 years after they were presented.

Just over half of the 60 projects presented at DH2005 are still online. Of all the projects, about one-third are ongoing; one-third have been clearly completed; and one-third have unknown statuses. Of the 23 projects that were considered to be complete, three-quarters are still online; one quarter is no longer accessible.

Creating Digital Cultural Heritage Collections In An Urban Academic Library Setting, Jennifer Ann Johnson Jan 2015

Creating Digital Cultural Heritage Collections In An Urban Academic Library Setting, Jennifer Ann Johnson

Urban Library Journal

As libraries develop digital cultural heritage collections the relationship with the organizations that own the collection are vital to the success of the process. This is ground that libraries have typically not operated. Organizations external to libraries that own collections have many needs beyond the simple digitization process. IUPUI University Library is an urban academic library that has worked on developing relationships with external organizations for almost ten years. During this time there have been many hurdles and lessons learned. This paper highlights some of the trends in relationship building with community organizations and offers two unique case studies that …

Cuny's Lilac As A Model For A Large Urban University Professional Development Organization, Galina Letnikova

Publications and Research

The present study addresses the history of the Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC), a voluntary professional organization at City University of New York (CUNY). The author discusses the circumstances leading to the committee’s formation, its growth, transformation, and its role in the professional development of CUNY librarians. Data collection was done by means of interviews held with past and present members of the committee. The interview questions were deliberated at LILAC’s meeting and sent to the interviewees by email. The interviews’ questions and answers were later grouped into three major categories: the original goals for the committee; the transformation …

Art Exhibit On Black Panther Challenges Library Patrons To Face Violence Of Mass Incarceration, Chris Steele Jan 2015

Art Exhibit On Black Panther Challenges Library Patrons To Face Violence Of Mass Incarceration, Chris Steele

Collaborative Librarianship

Although libraries are often regarded as spaces for inclusiveness, diversity, and democracy, this hasn’t always been the case in the United States. Using historical examples this article explores the legacy of racism in the United States concerning library access to citizens. This article analyzes a social justice artistic collaboration between artist Jackie Sumell and New York Public Library concerning solitary confinement and the racial disparity of mass incarceration in the United States. Intersections between community education and library exhibits are also discussed.

Building A Peer-Learning Service For Students In An Academic Library, Mary O'Kelly, Julie Garrison, Brian Merry, Jennifer Torreano Jan 2015

Building A Peer-Learning Service For Students In An Academic Library, Mary O'Kelly, Julie Garrison, Brian Merry, Jennifer Torreano

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Academic libraries are well lauded for offering supportive spaces for students’ self-directed study, and significant resources are dedicated to librarian instruction in the classroom. What many academic libraries lack, however, is a middle ground, a routine way for students to help one another using best practices in peer-to-peer learning theory. A new, nonauthoritative, supplemental service by students and for students began at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI, in fall 2012 with a cohort of “peer research consultants.” Students learn information literacy skills with a well-trained peer, untethered from the hierarchy inherent in formal instruction environments. This paper describes …

Marketing Finding Aids On Social Media: What Worked And What Didn’T Work, Felicia Williamson, Scott Vieira, James Williamson Jan 2015

Marketing Finding Aids On Social Media: What Worked And What Didn’T Work, Felicia Williamson, Scott Vieira, James Williamson

Central University Libraries Research

Sam Houston State University’s Special Collections (SHSU) needed a way to expose finding aids to more users. Using social media to promote online awareness, while simultaneously improving search engine result rankings for the finding aids, seemed like a potential solution to this problem. With this goal in mind, SHSU researchers selected ten social media sites to test the assumption that posting information about finding aids to social media would be an effective marketing strategy. Following three months of posting information about finding aids while tracking user traffic to finding aids from social media sites, the research findings indicate that a …

Teaching The Network: A Brief Demonstration Of The Internet’S Structure For Information Literacy Instruction, Robin Camille Davis Jan 2015

Teaching The Network: A Brief Demonstration Of The Internet’S Structure For Information Literacy Instruction, Robin Camille Davis

Publications and Research

A basic understanding of the Internet’s physical and operational structure is one element of information literacy. In this article, “traceroute” and “whois” commands are demonstrated as tools that librarians can use to illustrate how the Internet is geographically distributed, how businesses enable and control information sharing, and how to check a source's credibility by determining website ownership. With these tools, students can gain a better understanding of how online information is created, accessed, and affected in ways that may be otherwise invisible.

Git And Github For Librarians, Robin Camille Davis Jan 2015

Git And Github For Librarians, Robin Camille Davis

Publications and Research

One of the fastest-growing professional social networks is GitHub, an online space to share code. GitHub is based on free and open-source software called Git, a version control system used in many digital projects, from library websites to government data portals to scientific research. For projects that involve developing code and collaborating with others, Git is an invaluable tool; it also creates a backup system and structured documentation. In this article, we examine version control, the particulars of Git, the burgeoning social network of GitHub, and how Git can be an archival tool.

Corrections And Reentry: Digital Literacy Acquisition Case Study, Elizabeth Withers, Gloria Jacobs, Jill Castek, Drew Pizzolato, Kimberly D. Pendell, Stephen Reder Jan 2015

Corrections And Reentry: Digital Literacy Acquisition Case Study, Elizabeth Withers, Gloria Jacobs, Jill Castek, Drew Pizzolato, Kimberly D. Pendell, Stephen Reder

Research Briefs and Case Studies

This case study investigates the digital literacy acquisition process for learners within a corrections setting. The digital literacy program was part of the reentry program available to some individuals approaching their release date. The case study describes the lab within a prison, and details of how mentor-facilitated, self-paced learning was organized. Examination of the learner path in a corrections setting highlights how learners perceived the relevance of digital literacy in their lives; how they overcame their fears of computers or technology and their self-confidence grew; and potential changes in their self-identity, which often led to imagining new and different possible …
