Faculty hold widely varying perspectives on the benefits and challenges afforded by open access (OA) publishing. In the United States, conversations on OA models and strategy have been dominated by scholars affiliated with Carnegie R1 institutions. This article reports findings from interviews conducted with faculty at a Carnegie R2 institution, highlighting disciplinary and individual perspectives on the high costs and rich rewards afforded by OA. The results reiterate the persistence of a high degree of skepticism regarding the quality of peer review and business models associated with OA publishing. By exploring scholars’ perceptions of and experiences with OA publishing and …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper deployed a systematic review to examine prison libraries and intellectual freedom towards attaining social justice in Nigeria. Information resources used cover the periods of 2010 and 2020 to articulate the necessary development in prison libraries, intellectual freedom and social justice in Nigeria. Search engines such as Google scholar, Semantic Scholar, and RefSeek were used to retrieve information and through different queries yielded several results but very few of them were selected to fit in the study due to limited studies directed to address the focus of this study particularly in the Nigeria scenario. Information obtained were subjected to …

As You Like It: Building, Executing, And Assessing An Adaptable Library Instruction Program For First-Year Experience Courses, Joy I. Hansen
Communications in Information Literacy
Providing targeted experiences for first-year students both inside and outside the classroom is essential for building connections and creating a foundation for skill development necessary for academic success. Many first-year programs include a standalone course for incoming students or specific content weaved into existing course offerings. Information literacy skill-building holds an important place in these efforts; therefore, instruction librarians are provided additional opportunities to collaborate with faculty and reach students. Depending upon the size of the institution, however, the sheer number of first-year courses combined with shrinking library staff pose challenges. This Innovative Practices article is one library’s experience with …

This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers’ e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text …

JETstream: Library Newsletter
The arrival of spring generally brings to mind thoughts and images of new beginnings, op-timism and a sense of resili-ence after a long winter’s sea-son. This current issue of JETstream seems to reflect similar sentiments. Although the JET Library continued to seamlessly provide its services to the Molloy Community throughout the pandemic, be-ing able to interact and en-gage with our students in per-son has been beyond com-pare! One of our most exciting new ventures has been the intro-duction of the Learning Com-mons into the JET Library as part of a pilot program. As ex-plained by Courtney Dalfanso, Writing Center Director, …

Transforming The Publishing Academy: How Moving Online And Focusing On Diversity And Inclusion Made Scholarly Publishing Support More Accessible To Graduate Students, Lidiya Grote, Latisha Reynolds, Alex Howard
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Academic libraries frequently offer general research support services such as literature searching and citation management workshops for graduate students, however specific scholarly communications topics such as writing for an academic publication are less frequently addressed (Gannon-Leary & Bent, 2010; Perini & Calcagno, 2013). Support for scholarly publishing, data management and other scholarly communication topics are increasingly needed, and are the type of challenges with which librarians can assist. The University of Louisville Libraries in collaboration with the Graduate School offer a biennial, interdisciplinary, five-week publishing academy for graduate students.
The Publishing Academy is designed to introduce students to the scholarly …

Assessing Undergraduates Social Competence On Social Media In Nigeria, 'Niran Adetoro Prof, Benedict Ifeanyi Okike
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Undergraduates are known to be early adopters and users of social media and are socially competent online as against offline. The study sought to determine the social competence of students as exhibited on social media against the background of a growing decline in undergraduates’ offline social relevance. Using survey research design of correlative type, 850 undergraduates in similar faculties in two selected Universities in South west Nigeria were selected using multi-stage sampling. Questionnaire was used to collect data; reliability score of (α = 0.82) was derived for social competence on social media and (α = 0.88) for students’ use of …

Examination Of Strategies To Implementing Chip-And-Personal Identification Number Credit Card Authentication Infrastructures, Neville Arthur Gallimore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chip-and-Personal Identification Number (PIN) technology is seen as a game changer in many e-commerce industries and a transformational technology in the 21st century. However, security concerns have made chip-and-PIN adoption relatively slow. Massive unauthorized card payment transactions in the United States (U.S.) cost victims an estimate totaling billions of dollars. Information Technology (IT) managers are concerned with credit card fraud's financial loss and liability cost. Grounded in Rogers’s diffusion of innovation theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic study was to explore strategies used by IT managers to transition their e-commerce organizations to chip-and-PIN credit card authentication infrastructures. The participants …
A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh
A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Algorithmic governance (AG) systems aim to utilize machine learning (ML) in the form of mathematical modelling and predictive analytics to achieve greater efficiency and accuracy, effect equal treatment and eliminate bias. In its application to policing, algorithmic policing (AP) or predictive policing applies tree-based risk training algorithms on criminal complaint data to predict where and when the next crime is likely to occur, and who the likeliest perpetrators and victims are. Thus, AP preemptively determines where, how, and when to deploy police resources. However, as more and more cities adopt AP, there are fears that AP may be reinforcing age-long …

Exploring Algorithmic Literacy For College Students: An Educator’S Roadmap, Susan Gardner Archambault
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Research shows that college students are largely unaware of the impact of algorithms on their everyday lives. Also, most university students are not being taught about algorithms as part of the regular curriculum. This exploratory, qualitative study aimed to explore subject-matter experts’ insights and perceptions of the knowledge components, coping behaviors, and pedagogical considerations to aid faculty in teaching algorithmic literacy to college students. Eleven individual, semi-structured interviews and one focus group were conducted with scholars and teachers of critical algorithm studies and related fields. Findings suggested three sets of knowledge components that would contribute to students’ algorithmic literacy: general …
