The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune Jan 2006

The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune

The Christian Librarian

The library profession is in flux and uncertainty due to its lack of a well-founded philosophy of service. The Christian faith provides the necessary philosophical framework. Three implications follow from the application of a Christian worldview to library practice. First, Christian librarians should provide access to collections that will allow students to integrate faith and learning. Second, they should demonstrate love and concern for library users by offering diligent, humble service.Third, they should teach students the ethical use of information resources. Christianity has an impact on “library service” in three areas. First, the word library presumes a collection of library …

The Use Of People As Information Sources In Biblical Studies Research, David H. Michels Jan 2005

The Use Of People As Information Sources In Biblical Studies Research, David H. Michels

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In this exploratory study, I examined the role that people play as informal information sources in biblical studies research. Using semi-structured interviews, I asked a group of seven biblical studies researchers specific questions about their information-seeking behaviour. The study demonstrated that the majority of the researchers regularly used people as information sources in their research. Sometimes they sought factual information from these sources but most frequently they sought affective information; they sought evaluation and affirmation from their colleagues regarding the direction of their research.

Building Your Library Strategically, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2003

Building Your Library Strategically, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seven principles of library development should enable readers to build effective collections while wasting minimal amounts of time, money, and shelf space. (1) Plan to spend money. (2) Resolve that bigger is not necessarily better. (3) Choose the media and formats that will make up your library. (4) Build your reference collection first. (5) Choose commentaries (and other sources) wisely. (6) Take advantage of local library resources. (7) Collect (and read) across a broad range of subjects.

Know-It-All Librarians, Beth Posner Jan 2002

Know-It-All Librarians, Beth Posner

Publications and Research

Librarians are depicted as know-it-alls by some, and as know-nothings by others. Similarly, they are seen as both utterly powerless and preternaturally powerful. This essay offers examples of these contradictory images, examines their implications, and proposes a more realistic view of librarians and their relation to knowledge and power.
