How Does The Transition From A Subject-Based Allocation Fund Structure To A One-Pot Allocation Fund Structure Impact Librarian Spending And Attitudes Toward Spending?: One Libraries' Experience With A One-Pot Allocation Approach For One-Time Acquisitions Spending, Anne Larrivee
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Every fiscal year, academic libraries must decide how to fairly allocate funds for their collection of one-time materials. A common approach is to divide these one-time funds between subject areas based on historic, quantitative, or expressed needs. A less mainstream approach is to combine all these funds into a single source of funds for one-time purchases. This article examines librarian response after transitioning from a subject-based allocation to a one-pot allocation approach for its one-time acquisitions. Methods of expenditure analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to assess the approach's effectiveness and librarian attitudes. The results of this study provide a …

Hosting An International Graduate Student Orientation, Liza Weisbrod, Juliet T. Rumble, Adelia Grabowsky, Isabel Altamirano, Emily Sahib
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
In Fall 2022, Auburn University Libraries faculty and staff hosted an orientation event for newly arrived international graduate students. Highlights of the event included tours of major library service points, a shared meal, and a meet and greet for graduate students and subject librarians. A key takeaway for both groups was an increased awareness of the differences that exist between U.S. academic libraries and those in other countries. The authors discuss elements of the library orientation that worked well, and address lessons learned that will be used to improve future events.
Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog
Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog
The Christian Librarian
Devout Christians work in a spectrum of library settings (including public libraries), networked by globalized information access. By nature of their employment, these librarians assist patrons in accessing and retrieving information that challenges or conflicts with a biblical worldview. How can one defend taking such an active role in this seeming contradiction? This article maintains that Christian commitment may not only co-exist with the freedom of information access but may also support it as a universal human right in our globalized, pluralistic context. To make the case, the essay contrasts two varying accounts of Global Ethics (differing in their view …

An Exploration Of Two Information Literacy Open Learning Object Repositories: Value, Content, And Engagement, Tiffanie Lynn Ford-Baxter
Communications in Information Literacy
Information literacy (IL) open learning object repositories (LORs) provide a space for librarians to find and exchange instruction resources and lessons. Given many librarians enter the workforce with little or no formal training or educational opportunities to learn about pedagogy, these repositories are indispensable resources to the Library and Information Science field. This study explored the contents of two popular IL LORs, Project Cora and the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy Sandbox, to uncover how users engage with the resources and how the repositories differ. This study's findings suggest that while resources within the LORs …

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is a widely implemented classification system in most libraries. However, its usage has declined over the past four decades, and libraries are advised to undergo reclassification. Conversely, it is recognized that the implementation of specialized classification systems significantly impacts information retrieval. Therefore, the aim of this study is to elucidate the concept and methodology behind the integration of bespoke categorization frameworks within diverse libraries across Indonesia over the past decade. This study employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Context (PICOC) framework to analyze ideas, schemes, processes, and challenges …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study looked into issues surrounding the custody of records considered be of timeless value to the University. The population of study were the administrative and library staff of the University. Purposive sampling was used to select the staff who handle the records at the University. Interviews and observation were the data collection instruments. Findings showed existence of multiple archives across the various departments, faculties and secretariat of the Vice-Chancellor and a lack of university-wide finding aids to accessing records among others. A policy on archiving, the establishment of a centralized archival unit, engagement of a professional archivist, adoption of …

Roesch Library Faculty Publications
This chapter considers the importance of Catholic comics in special collections and emphasizes their potential as multi-disciplinary research and teaching tools. The legacy of comics as Catholic educational literature, subjects of censorship, and political bellwethers in the United States make these visual texts rich in content for both special collections instruction and student scholarship. This article provides an overview of Catholic comics in special collections at the University of Dayton, a brief survey of the history of Catholic comics in the United States, and illustrates examples of active learning and research in special collections through two case studies. This collection of works was carefully curated to provide unique, meaningful, and …
Bibliography, Print Culture, And What To Do With Comics In A Rare Books Library, Michael C. Weisenburg
Bibliography, Print Culture, And What To Do With Comics In A Rare Books Library, Michael C. Weisenburg
Faculty and Staff Publications
Comic books are among the rare books of the future. In fact, some comic books are scarcer and more valuable than many of the “old books” that fill special collections stacks. This essay proposes to answer the questions of “What do we do with comics in an academic library?” by analyzing comics as a popular phenomenon that is deeply rooted in book history and the developing print culture of the past 100 years. Using the traditional methods of bibliographic analysis, we might better situate comics within the mission of academic libraries as we work to foster learning, discovery, and inclusivity …

Library Books and Book Chapters
Libraries all over the world are incorporating events, displays and exhibitions as a tool to engage with students, faculty, and the larger communities as well as to raise awareness about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion throughout its walls, activities and collections. The scale of these programs can vary from small in-house displays to library-wide or loaned exhibitions or events. They can either be collaborative in nature or curated internally by students, staff or librarians. The Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University engages the wide community with its Events and Exhibition programming not only to promote DEI initiatives at the Leatherby Libraries but …

Fostering Data Literacy Teaching With Quantitative Data In The Social Sciences, Dylan Ruedinger, Daniella Miriam Cooper, Samantha Minnis, Gayle Schaub
Scholarly Papers and Articles
Quantitative literacy is an essential twenty-first century skill that universities are heavily invested in teaching to students. The social sciences play an important role in these efforts because they attract students who might otherwise avoid data and mathematically oriented courses and because they ground quantitative reasoning in political and social contexts that resonate with undergraduates. However, pedagogical best practices for social science instructors have been slow to emerge and the support needs of instructors and students remain difficult to discern. Ithaka S+R’s Teaching Support Services program explores the teaching practices and support needs of collegiate instructors. Our most recent project …

"To Keep The Church Record And History": The Evolution Of The Church Historian's Office, Cory L. Nimer
"To Keep The Church Record And History": The Evolution Of The Church Historian's Office, Cory L. Nimer
Journal of Western Archives
Authors looking at the development of the field of Mormon history have often evaluated it in terms of historiography—as its progression from the domain of amateurs to the output of academics. However, studies of the composition and development of the larger history profession have focused on the discipline's fragmentation and the formation of an "archival divide" between those that write history and those collecting and preserving its sources. This latter approach provides a useful framework for understanding the evolution of the Church Historian's Office of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from its origins in 1831 to its …

Racial Equity In Collections: Building The Collections Our Libraries Need, Amy Pham, Glenn Johnson-Grau
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
Librarians are trying to meet the call for fundamental and radical change in collection development practices while struggling with challenges in time, money, and subject expertise, particularly at small institutions. It will take long-term, systemic change to address ingrained biases and limitations of selectors, publishers, and social systems. Prepackaged resources from library vendors provide a limited solution for collection gaps, with recent products newly pitched to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Do these products actually contribute value to library collections as claimed? If market-based systems do not meet libraries’ needs, what might the alternatives be? We propose to analyze …

Wiley Journal Package: Unl Download Activity By Subject, David C. Tyler, Casey Hoeve, David Macaulay, Robin Mcclanahan
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: White Papers
Because the field of librarianship has been reconsidering its relationship to commercial academic publishers and their 'Big Deal' journal packages, the authors decided to review the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's usage of Wiley's package. In this report, the authors looked into whether UNL's downloads by subject were such that subscribing to a number of hypothetical smaller, subject-specific packages, rather than to the entire Wiley package, might be a viable strategy.
