Session 2b: Reversing White Yearning: A Brown And Queer Filipinx Librarian’S Exorcism Of Colonialism And Veneration Of Indigenous Ancestry (A Work In Progress), Joseph Kevin Sebastian
POC in LIS Summit
This session outlines my progress in an autotheoretical project exploring the tensions between my intersectional identities as a queer, immigrant, and brown citizen, and their connections with my experiences navigating the institutional whiteness of librarianship. As part of the Philippine diaspora, I've struggled with the legacies of Spanish and American colonialism manifesting in a psychic "self-sabotaging pathology" induced by "epistemic violence. . . wrought on a people’s psyche when their sense of themselves and their world is exploded through denigration, demonisation, delegitimation or simply, disallowance" (Mendoza 2017). By recounting my journey to becoming a librarian, I draw parallels between the …

Analyzing The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, And Threats Of Ai In Libraries, Parbat Chhetri
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) associated with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in libraries. AI has the potential to transform library and information science, revolutionizing processes, and services. The strengths of AI in libraries include efficient information retrieval and management, enhanced user experiences through personalization, automation of routine tasks, and improved decision-making through data analysis. However, the weaknesses of AI in libraries encompass ethical considerations and biases, the potential lack of human touch and personalized assistance, technical challenges, and concerns about job displacement. The article also explores the opportunities presented …

Online Media Literacy Intervention In Indonesia Reduces Misinformation Sharing Intention, Trenton Ford, Michael Yankoski, Matthew Facciani, Tim Weninger
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Media literacy is widely viewed as an important tool in the fight against the spread of misinformation online. However, efforts to boost media literacy have primarily focused on Western-media and Western-oriented social media platforms, which are substantively different from the media and platforms used widely in the Global South. In the present work, we focus on the media ecosystem of Indonesia and report the results of an online media literacy intervention consisting of short-videos that were targeted specifically to social media users in Indonesia (N= 656). We found that participants in our media literacy intervention were 64% more …
Filipino Students’ Competency In Evaluating Digital Media Content Credibility: ‘Beginning’ To ‘Emerging’ Levels, Margarita Felipe Fajardo
Filipino Students’ Competency In Evaluating Digital Media Content Credibility: ‘Beginning’ To ‘Emerging’ Levels, Margarita Felipe Fajardo
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This study investigates Filipino students’ reasoning competency levels in evaluating the credibility of digital media content and whether significant statistical differences exist in their competency by education status, sex, age group, Internet use, and geographical location. Four hundred twenty-four students representing the senior high school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels responded to four modified versions of the Stanford History Education Group’s civic online reasoning tasks. The study found that most students have ‘beginning’ competency levels in author-checking, fact-checking, and bias-checking but ‘emerging’ competency levels for image-checking. Younger students and those who spend more hours online have higher mean competency levels for …

Thinking Outside The Dyad: Incorporating Cohort-Based Experiences Into Mentorship, Angela Yon, Grace Allbaugh, Susan Franzen
Thinking Outside The Dyad: Incorporating Cohort-Based Experiences Into Mentorship, Angela Yon, Grace Allbaugh, Susan Franzen
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
A benefit of the traditional one-to-one, hierarchical mentoring relationship is the individualized attention and guidance the mentor provides the mentee. This singular mentoring relationship can be effective but is not always sufficient in addressing institutional acculturation and meeting personal needs of the new employee. This paper discusses how an emergent mentoring program at Milner Library blended the dyadic mentoring relationship with cohort-based programming to create a space for participants to learn from colleagues across departments, share experiences, and consider psychosocial issues. These grassroots programming efforts have cultivated holistic engagement and renewed community.

Previous investigations into trends in Library and Information Science (LIS) literature have revealed changes in the topics librarians publish on over time, with older studies highlighting classification and indexing, and information retrieval and more recent studies highlighting keywords such as internet, information technology, digital libraries, and again, information retrieval. No similar investigation has been conducted on current publication trends by health sciences librarians. This study analyzes the top themes on which health sciences librarians published from 2016 to 2020 by examining the frequency of keywords. Keywords and subject headings were analyzed from The Journal of the Medical Library Association, Medical …

Covid-19 Pandemic And Library And Information Professionals In Cameroon: Challenges And Opportunities, Roseline Bawack
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries and Information professionals in Cameroon are in crisis, undergoing a somewhat paradigmatic paralysis in information and knowledge dissemination. The emergence of Information technology and Artificial Intelligence have worsened the situation by transforming the way information is captured, organized, packaged, stored, and disseminated for utilization. As if that is not enough, the covid-19 came unexpectedly which took everyone, including libraries and information professionals by surprise bringing along several challenges. Library and information professionals have no other option but to face these challenges, transform some of these challenges into opportunities, and design strategies to enable them remain resilient during the covid-19 …

The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay documents the process and outcomes of a structured, group-based effort used to explore the connections between the biblical worldview and librarianship. Participants in the inquiry process included the author (as moderator) and seven of his colleagues. The process entailed examining four “frames” of the biblical narrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation) and eliciting implications for the realm of libraries. The biblical worldview was found to provide remarkably practical theory concerning libraries, accounting for their existence across diverse cultures worldwide; plausibly explaining virtues, flaws, opportunities, and challenges; and prescribing principles through which Christians can advance God’s kingdom through library …

This study explored 141 Korean immigrant parents’ use of local libraries to enhance their families’ social and cultural capital and adjust to the host country. We searched resources in Korean, and multicultural programs planned for the public and immigrants, Asian immigrants in particular, at two libraries before and during COVID-19. Parents reported dissatisfaction with library services because of language barriers (38%) and the lack of Korean resources (38%) and cultural programs (25%). Except for 18 books and 24 e-resources, no library resources in Korean were published after 2008. Before COVID-19, one multicultural program was offered for children. At Branches B …

Do they really smell of marshmallow Peeps? I nervously sniffed my brightly polished fingernails as I walked to my on-campus video interview, where I would talk about what it was like being a gender non-conforming person at my workplace. My university wanted individuals’ experiences, mine included, to create a webpage full of written and video stories of a group of employees to show how inclusive we were. But back to my nails.
