A reading comprehension study using Discis Books and below grade level sixth grade readers at Harmony Middle School, Farmington, Iowa, testing positive as kinesthetic learners, was carried out in a nine week time period. The study's participants completed a learning styles inventory and a comprehension reading inventory. Students were then randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The control group participated in classroom instruction and independent silent reading. The experimental group participated in classroom instruction and computer assisted instruction. A post comprehension inventory was administered.

A Cross-Cultural Anthology Of Mythological Flood Stories, Gayle R. Kelley

With each mythological flood story is a short narrative describing the background of the story, its cultural roots, or anything else that would bring life and interest to the retelling. This anthology will …

Improving The Implementation Of A Research Tool: Methods To Increase Library Survey Response Rates, Judith R.J. Johnson, Anne E. Hedrich Jan 1994

Improving The Implementation Of A Research Tool: Methods To Increase Library Survey Response Rates, Judith R.J. Johnson, Anne E. Hedrich

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

In the winter of 1992 we began research into the implementation of a university-wide survey. This project grew out of discussion about ways Merrill Library could be more responsive through collection development to changing trends in course offerings and research emphases at Utah State University. It was felt that our collection development policies traditionally answered and were based upon teaching needs but might not address research-related needs adequately. This was in large part due to a lack of information about the evolution of research directions throughout the USU community. The problem was further exacerbated by the spiraling costs of journal …

Personal Space And Territoriality Of Users In An Academic And Public Library, Ruth A. Hamilton

Graduate Research Papers

An observation checklist was used to investigate responses of patrons to intrusion in their personal space. The study was done in a small academic library and a small public library. After the subject was seated an intruder would come in and sit as close to the subject as possible. The responding time was limited to five minutes. The response of the subject was recorded on a detailed checklist. Findings indicated that female subjects make more adjustments than male subjects. In general, adjustments made by subjects were minimal in number and minor in nature.

Mature Librarians And The University Faculty: Factors Contributing To Librarian's Acceptance As Colleagues, Jean A. Major Nov 1993

Mature Librarians And The University Faculty: Factors Contributing To Librarian's Acceptance As Colleagues, Jean A. Major

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

In an exploratory study, eighteen mature librarians who are considered colleagues of teaching faculty were interviewed to understand actual instances of acceptance within an institution. Participants demonstrated that performing the role of librarian and exploiting campus governance activities contributed significantly to collegial acceptance and were used to advantage more often than a common interest in research. The most important factor, however, was self-confidence as a librarian. Models and mentors reportedly helped subjects learn to be colleagues with other faculty; library school often did not.

The Anchor, Volume 107.08: October 27, 1993, Hope College

The Anchor: 1993

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Courier

This exchange of letters between Hope Emily Allen and George Bernard Shaw of November 1924 is published here for the first time. The letters reveal Shaw's interest in the Oneida Community and the descendants' apprehensions about public exposure of their historical documents, forty-four years after the breakup of the Community.

The archives were guarded by George Wallingford Noyes, nephew ofJohn Humphrey Noyes and Community historian, until his death in 1941. Thereafter some descendants who were part of Oneida Community Ltd. destroyed most of the original manuscripts, a tragedy mitigated only by the fact that G. W. Noyes had placed, in …
