From Page 1: "Because information plays a central role in environmental and CPR research, the quality, flow, and timeliness of of intellectual resources are crucial. The development agency community repeatedly stresses the intricate relationship between information access and economic development (UNDP, 1997; Mchombu, 1996; McConnell, 1996; Baranshamaje, 1995; Valantin, 1996). International information specialists write about the urgent need for local, appropriate information in locally-designed libraries which better serve local, indigenous communities (Alemna, 1996; Matare, 1997; Kuntze, 1996; Ifidon, 1990). The Effects Of An Individualized Reading Program On Recreational Reading, Kim Aneweer

The study consisted of three phases. During the first phase, the students chose their reading materials. A computer program assisted the students in choosing their books in phase two of the study. Adding Zest To Opac Instruction: Humor And The Unexpected, Bonnie Petry
Adding Zest To Opac Instruction: Humor And The Unexpected, Bonnie Petry
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
This article evolved from " Getting Students to NOTIS, "
a presentation that the author gave at the 1995 Chicago NOTIS Users
Group Meeting (NUGM) conference. Humor is a desirable element of
all types of instruction, particularly bibliographic instruction. A good
method for injecting some humor into bibliographic instruction is
introducing whimsical catalog entries. The author identifies five types
of bibIiographic records useful for this approach, provides strategies for
locating them, and suggests ways to incorporate them into a class.

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards
Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards
Pacific Studies
The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. The first, the scientific, depended on the construction and representation of a “static” …
