Accelerating Scholarly Communication: The Transformative Role Of Preprints, Andrea Chiarelli, Rob Johnson, Emma Richens, Stephen Pinfield
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Five take-away messages:
Early and fast dissemination, increased opportunities for feedback and openness are seen as the main benefits of preprints.
The main concerns over preprints are the lack of quality assurance, media potentially reporting inaccurate research and journals rejecting articles if a preprint has been posted.
Twitter has been playing a key enabling role in the current second wave of preprints and preprint servers. It also appears to be the main way researchers are exposed to preprints in the first place.
It is not clear who will be responsible for posting preprints in the long-term – researchers or publishers? …

Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis
ETSU Faculty Works
East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary …

Over the last thirty years, digitally-networked technologies have disrupted traditional media, turning business models on their head and changing the conditions for the creation, packaging and distribution of content. Yet, scholarly communication still looks remarkably as it did in the pre-digital age. The primary unit of dissemination remains the research article (or book in some disciplines), and today’s articles still bear a remarkable resemblance to those that populated the pages of Oldenburg’s Philosophical Transactions 350 years ago. In an age of such disruptive innovation, it is striking how little digital technologies have impacted scholarly publishing; and this is also somewhat …

Librarian Research
Many Open Educational Resources (OERs) have been developed during the past ten years that have the same quality as those offered by major publishers. We will identify the pros and cons of switching from a traditional textbook to an OER. After the Q&A, we will work with the participants to locate an OER textbook that each participant will evaluate for possible adoption. This session is most suited to faculty who are teaching lower division General Education classes with a large number of students enrolled in a lecture or in multiple sections.

Positioning The Library As A Strategic Partner To Enrich The Campus Experience Through Art, Tanja Harrison
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Academic libraries are centres that promote research excellence, offering resources for their communities to help consider the world around us. Artists use their form of creative expression to raise questions about life and to interpret the human condition. Art has the power to enrich the academic environment through new and alternate ways of representing scholarship, helping to make research appealing and more accessible to a variety of audiences. The Library can be a catalyst to propel this goal forward, helping students navigate university life, building a bridge with internal and external communities, and informing faculty research in new and meaningful …

“What’S Up, Doc?”: Selling Digital Literacy To Academics, Marianne Sato, Kathleen Smeaton, Thomas Palmer
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
When academics receive emails that start with “Wassup bro?” and students think digital literacy means “computer skills for old people”, how does the library bridge the gap between students and academics? Increasingly, libraries play a pivotal role in supporting learning in this critical space. However, more could be done. Libraries need to advocate for digital literacy as a legitimate capability that should be embedded into the curriculum rather than an optional extra.
In 2018, The University of Queensland Library undertook a project to create digital literacy modules to enable students to develop digital capabilities that would “fit an individual for …

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Oceanographic Campus Library has always had a unique challenge in that it is the final clearing house for student capstone, thesis, and dissertation binding and publication. The library has traditionally been the host of the final print publication and the liaison between the student and the bindery. With the launch of NSUWorks, NSU’s institutional repository, 6 years ago, the library worked to develop an innovative and effective start to finish workflow for student Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) to change the physical lifecycle of NSU’s theses and dissertations into a virtual ETD lifecycle.
