Good Gossip: Spreading The Word To Protect Each Other, Nimisha Bhat Jul 2021

Good Gossip: Spreading The Word To Protect Each Other, Nimisha Bhat

POC in LIS Summit

Librarians from traditionally underrepresented populations are subjected to a litany of toxic behaviors in our workplaces and often find ourselves using strategies that help us survive in the job. One of those strategies is gossip. We have a default societal understanding of gossip as an inherently negative way of communicating, and associate it as a bad behavioral trait in people. This presentation will address the concept of “good gossip,” a way that librarians of color spread news and information amongst ourselves in the workplace in order to keep each other informed of knowledge that is often kept secret or privileged …

Imagining Trauma-Informed Care In Libraries (2 Hour Workshop), Nisha Mody Jul 2021

Imagining Trauma-Informed Care In Libraries (2 Hour Workshop), Nisha Mody

POC in LIS Summit

Trauma-informed care is widely discussed in literature related to social work and psychology, however, trauma-informed care principles can be applied everywhere. To put it simply, trauma-informed care asks "What happened to you?" instead of "What's wrong with you?" However, it isn't easy to ask this question directly in libraries as opposed to social work and/or psychology. However, there are ways to create trauma-informed practices in librarianship. It gives regard and consideration to individual trauma and well as the systemic trauma that comes with racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, homophobia, ageism, and other forms of oppression, especially related white supremacy and capitalism. …

High-quality service will increase student motivation in accessing repositories. This study aims to reveal the impact of repository service quality on student motivation in using research services at the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Purwokerto. This research study used quantitative methods. This study found that seven direct relationships have significant impacts. This study found that Attitude toward_Behavior (AtB) highly influenced students to visit library research services—both online and offline. AtB brings two other variables, namely Library_as Place (LaP) and Information Control (IC), which have an indirect effect on student visiting interest. Thus, activities that should be prioritized to increase student visits …

Occasional Groups In Crowdsourcing Platforms, Mahboobeh Harandi

Dissertations - ALL

Contributors to online crowdsourcing systems generally work independently on pieces of the product but in some cases, task interdependencies may require collaboration to develop a final product. These collaborations though take a distinctive form because of the nature of crowdsourced work. Collaboration may be implicit instead of explicit. Individuals engaged in a group conversation may not stay with the group for long, i.e., the group is an ``occasional group.'' Occasional group interactions are often not well supported by systems, as they are not designed for team work. This dissertation examines the characteristics and work of occasional groups in the Gravity …

Student employees are a critical component in the workforce of academic libraries. While more established library services have the benefit of attracting student employees specifically interested in their work, scholarly communication programs, and library publishing efforts in particular, have more difficulty describing and garnering interest in their work. This article describes the journey of the Digital Initiatives Unit at Utah State University Libraries as we navigated the particular trials that come with library publishing—specifically delving into the work of our institutional repository (IR) and the role of student employees in those efforts. The labor of our program is variable and …

This study analyses the behavioural trends in the use of scientific information from these two media: printed books and e-books and the way university libraries users choose to use it, particularly in the pandemic context. Librarians As Research Partners On Interdisciplinary Research Teams, Kineret Ben Knaan, Kelly Miller

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

There is a growing body of literature focusing on the changing roles of librarians within an academic setting. Re-conceptualizing the ways in which librarians add value to institutional research entails new ways of assessing their contributions, supporting them in the process of change, and providing them with ongoing professional development and training opportunities. In this paper, we reflect on the experiences of University of Miami (UM) librarians as experimental members of research teams funded through the University’s Laboratory for Integrative Knowledge (U-LINK), a strategic initiative to advance interdisciplinary research that addresses societal problems. Over the last three years, U-LINK librarians …

Building Ambidexterity In Libraries: Role Of Competitive Intelligence, Adebowale Jeremy Adetayo, Mufutau Ayobami Asiru, Ibrahim Bolaji Omolabi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries are increasingly becoming affected by rapid changes in information technology, competition from the private information sector and fear of losing the monopoly position. Academic libraries’ dilemma is evident, based on the declining support from parent institutions and declining use trends. In the face of stiff competition, their reaction has to be quick to preserve their place. Academic librarians cannot efficiently prepare for the future or position themselves until they create a balance between exploitation and exploration. To remain relevant, librarians must re-strategize by building ambidexterity into the library through competitive intelligence (CI). The article explores a structural approach …
