From Negotiating To Assessing Impact: Centering Student Authors In Open Access Agreements, Lindsey Skaggs, Rachel E. Scott
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Librarians negotiating open access have several data points to consider. Although historic publishing is one such data point, student authors are not typically considered separately. Join librarians for a discussion of how student engagement with open access publishing informs negotiation and assessment and advances student success.

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: The advent of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT has introduced notable advancements in various surgical disciplines. These developments have led to an increased interest in the use of LLMs for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding in surgery. With CPT coding being a complex and time-consuming process, often exacerbated by the scarcity of professional coders, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions to enhance coding efficiency and accuracy.
METHODS: This observational study evaluated the effectiveness of five publicly available large language models-Perplexity.AI, Bard, BingAI, ChatGPT 3.5, and ChatGPT 4.0-in accurately identifying CPT codes for hand surgery procedures. A …

Teaching Archival Intelligence Through An Immersive Class Experience, Dulce Kersting-Lark
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
While the University of Idaho does not offer course work in library and information sciences, there is a growing interest in humanities and social science departments on campus to offer skill-based classes that are often found in MLIS programs with an emphasis in archival studies. In particular, building skills considered essential to a public historian has become a goal for the history department's graduate program. As a result, the head of the university library's archives was approached to teach a credit-bearing course on working in archives as well as developing strategies for making archival material engaging to the public. Strategies For Enhancing Funding Approaches By Parent Institutions For Effective Service Delivery In Academic Libraries, Nsanta George Egbe, Samuel Otsonu Aboh
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The aim of this study is to investigate the strategies by which parent institutions can enhance funding approaches to improve service delivery in academic libraries in Nigeria. Utilizing a descriptive survey research design, the study involved 88 library staff members from seven federal university libraries situated in the North Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja-Nigeria. Given the manageable and accessible nature of the population, no sampling method was employed. Data collection utilized three instruments: questionnaires, observation checklists, and structured interview schedules devised by the researcher. Quantitative analysis of questionnaire data utilized mean and standard deviation to address research …

Abstract
Goal: This study has examined perceived flexibility and benefits as determinants of cloud computing adoption by academic libraries in South-West, Nigeria
Methodology: This study used interviews for gathered data in a strictly qualitative manner. The system librarians in South-West Nigerian university libraries were the intended audience. Twenty (20) system librarians employed in the ICT department of nine (9) university libraries in South-West Nigeria made up the sample. There were five research questions formulated and answered.
Findings/Results: System librarians acknowledge the benefits of cloud computing adoption in academic libraries. To overcome these challenges, meticulous strategic planning is required

At the time of this SUNYLA mid-winter meeting, the City University of New York enters Year 2 of a three-year, 2-million-dollar Mellon Foundation-funded project to explore and strengthen archival collections across their 30+ libraries and research institutes. A major part of this project is to set up a shared instance of Archives Space that includes every repository across the university. This panel will explore the approach of a working group whose goal is to integrate 18 existing individual ArchivesSpace instances into a shared, multi-repository instance. This requires metadata normalization, dataset clean-up, and a series of policy decisions the group reaches …

Critical Picture Book Literacy, Caitlin Stewart, Heather Koopmans
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
This study sought to revisit established definitions of critical visual literacy and determine how this concept could be re-envisioned specifically for picture books when informed by the approaches of teacher education students who had received limited prior formal instruction on critiquing visual texts. Seventeen sophomore elementary education students engaged in written self-discourse around the visual narrative of Milo Imagines the World written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson where they generated questions and answers critically engaging with the visuals. These participants’ responses underwent thematic analysis informed by grounded theory which uncovered a collective definition for critical …
At What Cost? The Personal Stakes Of Intellectual Freedom, Jason D. Phillips, Jordan Ruud
At What Cost? The Personal Stakes Of Intellectual Freedom, Jason D. Phillips, Jordan Ruud
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This chapter explores the emotional, professional, and political costs faced by librarians advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion and intellectual freedom within libraries. Through personal narrative and critical reflection, the authors introduce the concept of "queer battle fatigue"—a framework for understanding the cumulative psychological toll on LGBTQ+ individuals who are consistently placed in advocacy roles within predominantly cisheteronormative institutions. A case study of a drag storytime event at a university library illustrates the social backlash, institutional pressures, and moral injury experienced by organizers, demonstrating how well-intentioned programming can become flashpoints for political controversy. The authors highlight the intensifying hostility toward LGBTQ+ representation …

Enemies Within The Gates: Contending With Internal Censorship Challenges, Jason D. Phillips
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This chapter explores the rarely discussed but impactful issue of internal censorship within academic libraries, focusing on challenges to LGBTQ+ materials. Drawing on personal experiences at a regional public university in the American South, the author recounts multiple instances where library staff and leadership acted in ways that undermined the inclusion of LGBTQ+ resources. These incidents ranged from quietly removing or hiding books to resisting the addition of LGBTQ+ periodicals and graphic novels, and even denying purchase requests without explanation. The chapter underscores how fear of controversy, personal bias, and institutional conservatism can result in "soft censorship," despite the profession's …

Libraries As Community Bridges: A Global Journey, Chloe Vicente
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
This lecture reflects on the transformative role of libraries as cultural bridges in an increasingly interconnected world, through a comprehensive review and analysis of international library systems. Employing a qualitative methodology combining institutional ethnography with comparative case analysis across European, Asian, and Latin American contexts, the research examines how libraries work as catalysts for cross-cultural understanding. The investigation reveals four significant findings for libraries as dynamic cultural institutions: regional approaches to library service delivery, successful frameworks for balancing digital transformation with cultural preservation, emerging paradigms for international collaboration, and the critical importance of multilingual and multicultural competencies in modern libraries. …
