The Past As Future, Antje B. Lemke Jan 1972

The Past As Future, Antje B. Lemke

The Courier

As soon as man began to record information, he faced two questions: how to find material that was durable enough to preserve his message, and how to find material that was easy to handle, could be drawn on quickly and could be carried with ease. Stone seemed to be the least perishable substance, but while it was ideal for monuments in honor of gods or rulers, it certainly was not practical for business transactions or scholarly pursuits. Thus, from the beginning of writing to our day, those who have been concerned with communication - publishers, librarians and all who write …

Building The Instructional Materials Center In The Small School, William G. Strabala Jan 1972

Building The Instructional Materials Center In The Small School, William G. Strabala

Graduate Research Papers

First, we must define what is meant by the term, Instructional Materials Center. It has been called a library, a resource center or an audiovisual center. Bruce R. Purrington's explanation seems appropriate. He likens the Instructional Materials Center to a university. A university is a collection of various schools or colleges, and the Instructional Materials Center is a collection of several libraries or resource units containing libraries of printed materials, projected materials, transmitted materials and recorded materials.

To explain the Instructional Materials Center's purpose we have to briefly look at the educational developments and demands of today. In the last …

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes Jan 1972

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes

Graduate Research Papers

The IMC should have a file of the resources in the community, and perhaps the surrounding area of outside persons and materials, that can be used in connection with a classroom program, Such a file located in the IJVIC would be accessible to all the professional staff in the building and be valuable to a newcomer on the staff.

A file as a guide to community resources that can be used as instructional materials should be located with the rest of the instructional materials in the IMC.

This paper presents some suggestions as how to find the community resources and …

Library Cooperation, Myron Dean Mcgrew Jan 1972

Library Cooperation, Myron Dean Mcgrew

Graduate Research Papers

Sometimes school people feel that combining the school library and the public library in the school building should be encouraged because this will make more efficient use of school and municipal funds. The reasoning behind this lies in reducing the duplication of materials and facilities. The idea sounds fine on paper, but "unless the answer has in it something that indicates the services will be improved or increased, I doubt if the project is worth doing."

A Brief Study Of The Place Of The Computer In The Library, William Mitchell Andrews Jan 1972

A Brief Study Of The Place Of The Computer In The Library, William Mitchell Andrews

Graduate Research Papers

When considering adapting the computer to library use, there appear to be four general areas where usage would be most practical. The first area might be labeled "library housekeeping operations," which would include the ordering and receiving of monographs and serials,
circulation control of library items and preparation of catalogs and listings of many kinds. The second area would consist of cataloging and allied content analysis operations designed to assign to each item subject identifiers, as well as call number or related classification information. The third area would be composed of storage and retrieval operations, which make it possible for …

A Survey Of The Utilization Of The Video Tape Recorder In Iowa Secondary Schools, Thomas W. Bingaman

Graduate Research Papers

As education in the United States continues to grow in importance, a number of factors that influence the learning process become increasingly significant. The use of educational media in the schools is one of the problems facing teachers and administrators. Technology in the media field has a marked tendency to move ahead much faster that the ability of educators to put these new tools to use. One such example of this dilemma is the video tape recorder.

As more and more Iowa school districts purchase video tape equipment, the question of utilization of this apparatus becomes important. It is necessary …

A Study Of Attitudes Toward Discipline And Discipline Problems In Secondary School Libraries, Marie Allan Jan 1972

A Study Of Attitudes Toward Discipline And Discipline Problems In Secondary School Libraries, Marie Allan

Graduate Research Papers

This research was undertaken as a study of attitudes toward discipline and discipline problems found in secondary school libraries. The topic has, up to the present, been largely ignored. A search of the literature yields only a small amount of material relating to this important topic. Yet we are told, "Every teacher is expected to keep order in his or her own area. No combination of other virtues will compensate for lack of ability to maintain discipline. Weak disciplinarians are discharged far more often than they are retained."

Thus it may be seen that the librarian's success in his field …

A Brief Study Of Budgeting For The School Library, Reid Edward Spencer Jan 1972

A Brief Study Of Budgeting For The School Library, Reid Edward Spencer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to briefly study the processes involved in preparing a budget applicable to a school's instructional materials center(hereinafter referred to as the IMC). However, before a library's budget can be studied and analyzed, the practices and theories of general school finance must be examined--where the money comes from and how the overall school budget is prepared. After such an examination, it becomes much easier to narrow the scope of study to the school library budget. At the individual school library level, much of the same planning theory takes place as it does on the district …

A Slide-Tape Introduction To A Unit On The American Indian, Linda L. Jones Jan 1972

A Slide-Tape Introduction To A Unit On The American Indian, Linda L. Jones

Graduate Research Papers

In order to develop a curriculum which is more relevant to student interests and the school's needs, the librarian and teacher have certain duties to perform. The teacher defines the objectives desired; the librarian provides and develops media which achieve these bjectives. Therefore, the librarian and the Instructional Media Center are the best sources not only for commercially produced materials hut for those which the school produces. Possibly the most effective area to produce materials would be in units not covered adequately by the textbook, in this case, the American Indian.
