Library literature indicates a growth in the use of volunteers in libraries. The purposes of this study were three fold. it was designed to determine if volunteers are serving in high school library-media centers in the state of Iowa. In those centers where volunteers were not used, the reasons for not utilizing volunteers were ascertained. The third function of this study was to learn how volunteers are contributing to the media centers that engage their services.

Utilization Of Educational Television In Iowa's Elementary Schools, Jane Barker

Graduate Research Papers

In today;'s fast-paced world where messages conveyed through many forms of media, television as a form of entertainment has enjoyed much popularity. It has grown in recent years as a method of instruction in the school. The success of "Sesame Street" has powerfully demonstrated the potential of instruction through entertainment.

Television can be used effectively for learning, especially if used regularly. Kelly (1964) has shown that when television is used regularly as a source of instruction in the form of lectures and demonstrations, students do as well and sometimes significantly better on tests than when it is not used regularly. …

Formal Instruction In Library Skills At The High School Level: The Present Situation And Implications For Future Instruction, Margaret V. Hearity Jan 1974

Formal Instruction In Library Skills At The High School Level: The Present Situation And Implications For Future Instruction, Margaret V. Hearity

Graduate Research Papers

Since the Dewey Decimal System, upon which the organization of most public and school libraries is based, is not likely to be well understood through a random approach, and since many individual items in the library require, for fullest use and benefit, an understanding of their organization and purpose, the hypothesis of this paper is that skills in the use of the library as a whole and of its many materials need to be taught in a formal manner.

In an effort to conclude whether this hypothesis has validity, the writer has sought to learn what many students of the …

A Comment On Media Center-Directed Leisure Reading Guidance In The Secondary School, Rozella Lister Stull Jan 1974

A Comment On Media Center-Directed Leisure Reading Guidance In The Secondary School, Rozella Lister Stull

Graduate Research Papers

Today' s media specialist faces a great many demands upon her expertise. There can be no distinction made between the toils of selection to the rigors of cataloging. Nor may one emphasize the importance of bibliographic work over the necessity of film previewing. Media specialists are constantly bombarded with newer and more difficult tasks as services are expanded to meet the needs of the youth of the 70's. The media center has become in many cases an all encompassing unit with little differentiation among its services. The question then being how can one service be singled out as particularly significant. …

Public Library Service For The Preschool Child, Betty Bergman Jan 1974

Public Library Service For The Preschool Child, Betty Bergman

Graduate Research Papers

Story telling is considered one of the oldest arts, but the preschool story hour for three to five year olds is relatively new in library work. Research indicates the first story hours for preschoolers began in the public library in the late 1930's and the early 1940's. Only very recently, is there evidence of public library service beyond the traditional print-oriented preschool story hour for the preschool child. For example, such federally funded experimental projects as the one developed and implemented by Erie Public Library, Erie, Pennsylvania in 1972 entitled "Media Library for Preschoolers" and the San Francisco Public Library's …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of Iowa Junior High Media Specialists Concerning Sex And Sexuality Materials In The Media Center, Elizabeth Campbell

Graduate Research Papers

This research was undertaken as a study of attitudes toward sex and sexuality materials and their availability and use in junior high media centers. Several basic assumptions were accepted before the study began. The first assumption: the Media Center best serves the school by maintaining a wide selection of media at different levels of ability and interest, and a large portion of these materials are selected to support the school's curricular objectives. The second assumption: if the Media Center is truly serving the school, the Media Specialist must be providing up to date and vital information concerning adolescent sexuality. A …

Museum Visitor Analysis: The Kampsville Example, Kenneth L. Brott Jan 1974

Museum Visitor Analysis: The Kampsville Example, Kenneth L. Brott

All Master's Theses

This paper concerns a small community museum in Kampsville, Illinois. Economic interaction phenomena are examined within the immediate business community for impact derived directly from museum visitors. Increased sales potential available from museum visitor interaction was examined through field observation. Potential impact from this source signals a viable means of educational and economic development appreciated simultaneously in small communities attempting revitalization efforts.

Guidelines and recommendations are included for application in additional research studies of museum/community interaction potential.
