Library Collection Deterioration: A Study At The University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign, Tina E. Chrzastowski, David Cobb, Nancy Davis, Jean Geil, Betsy Kruger

Staff publications, research, and presentations

A survey of bound items in the bookstacks of the University of Illinois library at Urbana-Champaign was conducted following the methodology used in the 1979 survey of the Green Library stacks at Stanford University. A reliable random sampling technique was used. The survey found that 37.0% of the items at Illinois are seriously deteriorated (paper is embrittled), 33.6% are moderately deteriorated (paper is becoming brittle), and 29.4% are in good condition (paper shows no signs of deterioration). The total cost of the survey was $1,845.45 (excluding permanent staff salaries). The methodology can be adapted by other libraries for collection condition …

New Appraisal Techniques: The Effect Of Theory On Practice, Margaret Hedstrom Jan 1989

New Appraisal Techniques: The Effect Of Theory On Practice, Margaret Hedstrom

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Archivists are acutely aware of the need for a better framework and new methods to guide the selection of records with enduring value. Whether appraising the current records of government agencies, corporations, colleges or universities, or social organizations, archivists confront a gargantuan task with meager tools. Appraisal theory provides general principles based on a few broad generalizations: the distinction between primary and secondary uses for records; the need to evaluate their evidential and informational values; the notion that organizations ought to preserve a record of their significant policies, procedures, functions, and activities; and the premise that certain levels of the …

The Library Media Program And The Mildly Retarded Adolescent, Barbara Feuerhak

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a personal plan of enrichment on library use by thirteen mildly mentally retarded adolescents, ages 14-18, These students were members of a special education class at Tripoli High School, Tripoli, Iowa. Students were interviewed at the beginning and ending of the fall semester, 1988-1989, about their attitudes toward the library media center and staff. Before the study began the students did not use the library media center during any free periods at school by their own choice. They were observed daily during six observation weeks that fell at approximately …

The Very Model Of A Modern Major General: Documentation Strategy And The Center For Popular Music, Ellen Garrison Jan 1989

The Very Model Of A Modern Major General: Documentation Strategy And The Center For Popular Music, Ellen Garrison

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In the last two decades much has been written defining, defending, and extolling an approach to the traditional archival goal of "identification and retention of records of enduring value" called by its supporters documentation strategy. The term itself is relatively new; nowhere, for example, does it appear in Frank Evans's 1974 "A Basic Glossary for Archivists, Manuscript Curators, and Records Managers". But the concept can be found in American archival literature as early as the writings of T.R. Schellenberg, and as this article will demonstrate, many special subject repositories like the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University …

Managment Techniques For Developing Libraries: Teaching Library Management Techniques To Indonesian Librarians, Zainuddin H.R. Lenggang, Chan Sirdi, Antoinette Paris Powell

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1981 the University of Kentucky became involved in a ten year project to improve agricultural education in the Western Islands of Indonesia. Part of this project was library improvement. In 1985 and in 1989 a library consultant was sent to Indonesia to work with libraries as part of this project. A Library Network was formed in 1985 to provide training and in 1989 the network sponsored a management short course for directors and other senior staff of the BKS-PTN-8 Libraries. The course was team taught by the consultant and two Indonesian librarians and lasted for 5 1/2 days. This …

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang Jan 1989

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

"The time is past when librarians can assume no patron is lesbian or gay, or that there is no interest in gay research," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian and Gay' section of Katzes' 1989 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and 1995) far exceeded any mainstream library collection known to either of the authors who …
