A Single Good Mind: Collaboration, Cooperation, And The Writing Self, Michael Spooner, Kathleen Blake Yancey

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Preparing to sign off on the term paper that’s almost overdue, I assemble the onion-sheets, clean, almost papyrus in their texture, collectively re/producing Professor Johnson’s paper: a critical review of David Copperfield. Don’t talk about what you liked, don’t talk about how you felt reading it, don’t talk about how it’s like other novels you’ve read. Just don’t talk: the honor code prohibits that. All of which means: figure out what my Ichabod Crane wants, read the text his way, write his paper, type it, submit.

Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students’ Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy Jan 1998

Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students’ Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Consideration of satisfaction should be an important part of the evaluation of library services. Satisfaction depends, to some extent, on patron expectations of services. This study evaluated changes in student expectations following library instruction and how they were related to overall, long-term satisfaction with the library. Satisfaction appeared to be related to student perceptions of information accessibility, staff competence and helpfulness, computer usefulness and ease of use, and skill level for using libraries. The study suggests that libraries may be well served by measuring patron satisfaction and learning what variables drive satisfaction at particular libraries.

Academic Libraries And Librarianship In Transition: Where Is Information Technology Taking Us?, Daniel A. Ortiz Jan 1998

Academic Libraries And Librarianship In Transition: Where Is Information Technology Taking Us?, Daniel A. Ortiz

Joseph P. Healey Library Publications

Academic libraries and librarians are now struggling to find a place amidst tradition and change while dealing with increasing operational costs, unstable students enrollment, library customers' growing and changing needs, as well as with changes in information access, storage, and retrieval. All of these seem to be effecting change in the role of academic libraries and librarians' responsibilities. New information technology is another leading force driving libraries and librarians into what seems to be a hard-to-figure-out role in the new millennium. These changes are taking place at the same time that universities in the United States are trying to bolster …

Documenting Industry And Labor In Alabama: Can A Documentation Strategy Model Help?, Martin T. Olliff Jan 1998

Documenting Industry And Labor In Alabama: Can A Documentation Strategy Model Help?, Martin T. Olliff

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

As early as 1997 the Society of Alabama Archivists (SALA) identified a number of topics in Alabama history and culture that were not well documented in the archives in the state. Some of these topics, for example North Alabama's aerospace industry, were just beginning to appear in archival collections. Alabama archivists took note of such fields early enough that the volume of accumulated records did not become a problem. On the other hand, archivists in the state faced enormous problems in coping with the mass of records they already knew existed in other underdocumented fields like labor and industry.

Look Before You Leap: Weaving Preservation Into Appraisal, Acquisition, Accessioning, And Processing Practices, Pam Hackbart-Dean, Theresa J. Montgomery Jan 1998

Look Before You Leap: Weaving Preservation Into Appraisal, Acquisition, Accessioning, And Processing Practices, Pam Hackbart-Dean, Theresa J. Montgomery

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Often the thrill of adventure and discovery propels archivists to pursue collections. While out in the field, few would pass up the opportunity to acquire an interesting collection that would enhance a repository's holdings or disregard an exciting find such as a love letter from a United States president or a personal diary. Sometimes, however, the excitement of discovery overshadows the daunting task of caring for these collections after they have been acquired. Regardless of the manner in which archival materials are acquired by a repository-whether by law, institutional mandate, purchase, or gift-it is important to evaluate the condition and …

Dilemmas Of Building A Sustainable Equitable Information Resource. Workshop In Political Theory And Policy Analysis, Indiana University, Charlotte Hess Jan 1998

Dilemmas Of Building A Sustainable Equitable Information Resource. Workshop In Political Theory And Policy Analysis, Indiana University, Charlotte Hess

Librarian Publications

From Page 1: "Because information plays a central role in environmental and CPR research, the quality, flow, and timeliness of of intellectual resources are crucial. The development agency community repeatedly stresses the intricate relationship between information access and economic development (UNDP, 1997; Mchombu, 1996; McConnell, 1996; Baranshamaje, 1995; Valantin, 1996). International information specialists write about the urgent need for local, appropriate information in locally-designed libraries which better serve local, indigenous communities (Alemna, 1996; Matare, 1997; Kuntze, 1996; Ifidon, 1990). Better accountability and communication of scientific information by researchers is also being voiced more frequently . In his keynote address at …

Discussion of the New York Public Library's Becoming Visible exhibit reflects the 1990s growth of mainstream institutional interest in gay, lesbian, and transgender archives, and the complications this interest presents.

The Effects Of An Individualized Reading Program On Recreational Reading, Kim Aneweer Jan 1998

The Effects Of An Individualized Reading Program On Recreational Reading, Kim Aneweer

Graduate Research Papers

We are creating a nation of alliterates. The vast majority of our population can read and write, but choose not to. The researcher intended to investigate this problem by creating an individualized reading program for a group of fifth grade students. The reading program was designed according to the students· reading levels and interests. The researcher monitored the amount of time the students spent reading for pleasure. The study consisted of three phases. During the first phase, the students chose their reading materials. A computer program assisted the students in choosing their books in phase two of the study. The …
