Neo-Imperialism And The Crisis Of Time, Edward Comor

FIMS Publications

This article applies the Innisian concept of media bias to contemporary U.S. foreign policy developments. The author argues that the common sense informing an emerging neo-imperialism has been profoundly influenced by Washington’s general neglect of time. Among others, consumption is assessed as a medium shaping such biases as well as contradictory policies related to the globalization project.

The Dilemma Of Survey Nonresponse, Jacquelyn Burkell Jan 2003

The Dilemma Of Survey Nonresponse, Jacquelyn Burkell

FIMS Publications

An examination of the library and information science (LIS) literature reveals that surveys published between 1996 and 2001 in three major LIS journals have an average response rate of 63%, and almost three quarters of the surveys have a response rate below 75% (the level that is widely held to be required for generalizability). Consistent with the practice in other disciplines, however, most LIS researchers do not address the issue of nonresponse beyond reporting the survey response rate. This article describes a strategy that LIS researchers can use to deal with the problem of nonresponse. As a first step, they …

It Takes A Village To Manage The 21st Century Reference Department, P. S. Mcmillen, L. Rielly

Library Faculty Research

Reference services at Oregon State University's Valley Library have undergone several reorganizations in response to institutional changes, shifting service needs and patron demands. Part of this history includes training for and functioning in team-based management. We have now evolved to a management model that utilizes workgroups and an advisory and coordinating council to assist in running the department. We find this model provides flexibility, sharing of the workload and professional development opportunities, all of which are essential in today's tumultuous reference environment. We will describe the functioning, potential hazards and multiple advantages of this model.

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson Jan 2003

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson

Librarian Publications

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. If such a task were to be undertaken, a new storage …

Global Changes In Scholarly Communication, Suzanne E. Thorin Jan 2003

Global Changes In Scholarly Communication, Suzanne E. Thorin

Librarian Publications

For more than a decade, the cost of print and electronic journals, particularly in the sciences, has increased rapidly at the same time that the amount of research being reported via published articles has grown exponentially. With academic libraries being less and less able to purchase the journals needed for their communities, the use of the term scholarly communication has evolved to illustrate the breakdown of the process of traditional scholarly publication; that is, as a means to disseminate research results, the present system of scholarly communication can no longer meet the needs of the scholarly community at large.

When …

(5) Choose commentaries (and other sources) wisely. (6) Take advantage of local library resources. (7) Collect (and read) across a broad range of subjects.

Thomas Owen And The Founding Of The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, Alden Monroe Jan 2003

Thomas Owen And The Founding Of The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, Alden Monroe

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In 1901 Alabama established the first independent government archives in the United States. The founding of the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) preceded that of the National Archives by more than thirty years. Other states had sponsored history programs, assigning the responsibility for public records to state libraries, secretaries of state, or state historical societies, but Alabama was the first to create an official state agency. This concept of government-supported, but independent, archives would become a model for others in the United States.

But this is only the starting point for a larger and more exciting plan. Part II will outline a new role for the Library—one befitting a 21st century university—that we believe will distinguish Sacred Heart University among its peers. One that, we hope, will contribute to the University’s …

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland Jan 2003

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland

The Christian Librarian

During the last half of the 20'11 century, the American Library Association- through the Office of Intellectual Freedom, the Freedom to Read Foundation and the Intellectual Freedom Action Network (ALAs Office 1995, 13) has emerged as one of America's leading opponents of censorship and advocates of free speech. The American Library Association's opposition to censorship is so absolute that it stands firmly against any library restrictions on access to books, magazines or internet sites even by children (Intellectual 1996, 84-94; cf. Berry 1998, 6; Mason 1997, I 04). There is some evidence, however, to suggest that there is a gap …
