The Evolution Of The Commercialization Of Knowledge With New Approach Of Referenced Publication Years Spectroscopy (Rpys), Ali Biranvand, Ahmad Shabani, Asefeh Asemi, Mozafar Cheshmehsohrabi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this study was to identify the most important historical works written in the field of commercialization of knowledge using Referenced Publication Years Spectroscopy (RPYS). Initial data were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) database to investigate the historical roots of published works in the field of commercialization of knowledge. Then, the main roots of this filed, the amount of received citations, and influential works were identified using RPYS software. Next, with the help of the yearcr software, the extent of the effects of the works outside of the range of peaks were also introduced. The period …

Humanities Collaborations And Research Practices: Investigating New Modes Of Collaborative Humanities Scholarship, Harriett Green, Angela Courtney, Megan Senseney
Charleston Library Conference
This paper presents preliminary findings from “Humanities Collaborations and Research Practices: Exploring Scholarship in the Global Midwest,” (HCRP), a collaborative project led by librarians at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Indiana University that examines how collaborative and experimental research practices in the humanities affects scholarly practices, scholarly communication, and research outcomes.
The HCRP study examines a series of multi-institutional humanities research projects funded by the Humanities Without Walls (HWW) Global Midwest initiative, a Mellon Foundation-funded consortium of Midwest university humanities centers. We conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with scholars from diverse humanities disciplines who were HWW Global Midwest awardees. …

From Lingua To Glossa: Linguistics In Fair Open Access, Johan Rooryck
Open Access Day
Johan Rooryck with be presenting from a remote location via GoToMeeting.
A description of his presentation is below:
Open Access publishing is often said to be the future of academic journals, but the actual move from a subscription model to an Open Access model is not easily achieved. The transition from Lingua to Glossa provides proof of concept that it can be done. This transition was made possible by our model of Fair Open Access, a model for flipping subscription journals to Open Access. This model has 3 main features:
-
Discipline-based: Linguistics in Open Access (LingOA, www.lingoa.eu) helps flipping …

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Manuscripts sent to editors are often in different states of crafting or drafting. It is the task of the editor to help the author by polishing the manuscripts to the acceptable standard. Editors may seek clarifications from the authors about the missing links in the drafts. They may ask for references of strong claims, improvement of the draft, refinement of the argument, adjustment in tone, chapter re-organisation, fixing grammar points, among others. Editors raise these flags in the editorial process through author queries. The nature of queries written by the editor for the author differs from the ones written by …

In this paper we examine the case of Tay, the Microsoft AI chatbot that was launched in March, 2016. After less than 24 hours, Microsoft shut down the experiment because the chatbot was generating tweets that were judged to be inappropriate since they included racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic language. We contend that the case of Tay illustrates a problem with the very nature of learning software (LS is a term that describes any software that changes its program in response to its interactions) that interacts directly with the public, and the developer’s role and responsibility associated with it. We make …

Bibliotaxonomy: Definition, Scope And Implication For Lis Scholarship, Chuma O. Nnadozie
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper introduces bibliotaxonomy as a generic name for those aspects of Library and Information Science (LIS) scholarship that deal with the processing and organization of books, documents and other information materials. It traces the origin of, and inspiration for bibliotaxonomy to different taxonomic practices in various communities, societies, as well as earlier philosophical and botanical classifications. A sketch of the contours of the field of bibliotaxonomy was presented which shows that this phenomenon cuts across specific library technical services of cataloguing, classification, indexing and accessioning. In addition, successful application of taxonomic principles from other disciplines in the organization of …

Engage With Your Cultural Side: Cultural Intelligence, Michele Villagran
Engage With Your Cultural Side: Cultural Intelligence, Michele Villagran
Faculty Publications
It is not enough to simply be ‘aware’ anymore. As our workforces become more diverse, we face a greater challenge and problem; that of how to successfully manage increasingly diverse interactions. To address this concern, organizations are applying the framework of cultural intelligence (CQ). Cultural intelligence is a person’s capability for successful adaptation to new cultural settings. This session’s learning goals include: what is cultural intelligence; how is CQ used as a practical tool for embracing differences and increasing work performance; how do you improve your own CQ capabilities including the four factors; and how do you apply CQ within …

Right Under Their Noses: Helping Patrons Identify The Resources At Their Fingertips, Jessica Garner, Fred W. Smith, Jessica Williams, Jermaine Bryant
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
A concern of all academic Interlibrary Loan Departments is having faculty/ staff & students request materials already owned by their home library. Jessica Garner, Jessica Williams, Fred Smith, and Jermaine Bryant conducted a qualitative research study with IRB approval to explore this concern. In this session, the presenters will describe how data suggest a more streamlined approach to redirecting searches originating in the library for outside sources to assets already physically (or electronically) stored in the library.

How Cultural Intelligence (Cq) Makes A Difference In Your Professional Environment, Michele Villagran
Faculty Publications
As workforces become more diverse, we face the challenge of managing increasingly diverse interactions. Many organizations apply the framework of “cultural intelligence” (CQ)—a person’s capability to adapt to new cultural settings or an unfamiliar cultural context. Rooted in academic research, CQ is a globally recognized way of assessing and improving effectiveness in culturally diverse situations. Leading organizations in business, education, government, and healthcare use CQ. This session will give an overview of CQ and its application within the information profession. It is designed for any individual that interacts with diverse cultures in any organizational segment.

The Mystery Of The Schubert Song: The Linked Data Promise, Kimmy Szeto
Publications and Research
Linked open data promises global interconnectedness of a vast amount of data. Web technologies promise to lower the barriers to accessing information and to enable knowledge production of massive scale. But can the web of data answer a music reference question? Starting with a seemingly impossible search for a Schubert song, this article describes how linked data technologies could overcome some limitations of catalog searching. However, technical and conceptual challenges are intertwined in the library community’s effort to publish linked data. Through an analysis of contrasting data models, this article offers a linked data reading of medium of performance and …

A window into an adult basic education (ABE) class shows several learners typing essays on laptops. Suddenly one student throws her hands up in the air loudly exclaiming, “I didn’t do anything! The computer just erased everything! It wasn’t me, it was the computer!” This scenario is all too familiar with new-to-computer users. Over time, this learner has developed more confidence and digital literacies, and has since passed the Language Arts GED test. However the technology skills needed in the workplace and in daily life go beyond those needed for test taking. Yet computers in adult education classrooms are most …
