Lis Curriculum Review Using Focus Group Interviews Of Employers, Khalid Mahmood
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Introduction
The employers of library and information science graduates are many and varied in nature. Designing an LIS educational program for diversified needs and expectations of the employers is very difficult. Library schools are always expected to get input from the consumers of their product about their changing expectations and needed skill set of the graduates. IFLA guidelines (2000) and ALA standards (2008) for LIS educational programs also acknowledge the employers’ right to know whether a given program is of good standing. They recommend the involvement of employers in planning and evaluation of program goals/objectives and curriculum. They also recommend …

Organization Of Islamic Knowledge In Libraries: The Role Of Classification Systems, Haroon Idrees
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries deal with recorded knowledge. Classification systems play a fundamental role in the organization, display, retrieval and access of the knowledge and materials in libraries. During the last one and a half century, formal classification systems and standards have been developed to replace the previous generic categorization. Such the systems are very famous, known and used by the libraries internationally. Some of these international standard systems include: Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC); Charles Ammi Cutter’s Expansive Classification (EC); The Subject Classification of James Duff Brown (SC); American Library of Congress Classification (LCC); Universal Decimal Classification (UDC): Henry E. Bliss’ Bibliographic Classification …

Digital Communication And The Pro-Democracy Movement In The Arab World: Role, Significance And Outcomes, Majed J. Khader Phd
Librarian Research

These mass civic demonstrations have been given many names, including the Arab Spring, Arab uprising, turmoil, tumult, chaos, Arab awakening, Arab revolution, revolt, etc. It is a reform movement on the march that was first started in Tunisia, which moved to Egypt, and then swept across the region to include Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and Syria. Activists in …

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon
Conference Proceedings
College students today flock to Wikipedia in droves, while at the same time academic libraries continue to pour time and money into print reference collections that are rarely used and take huge amounts of our libraries’ limited space. While libraries have responded to space and access concerns by turning to electronic books, title-by-title selection is a time-consuming affair for a collection that sees low use. In this paper we examine the factors that have led to the point where libraries need to reexamine how they collect and provide access to reference sources. Through a content analysis of reference transcripts and …

Collaborative Librarianship
A recent outreach project brought together the American University of Afghanistan and four world renowned US universities with branch campuses in Qatar’s Education City. Librarians in Qatar often collaborate with each other, but this unusual effort was the first time their collaboration reached across international borders to extend assistance to another country. The experience became a cultural exchange that brought together these dramatically different worlds. By utilizing technologies that make connecting and collaborating so easy these days, four librarians with backgrounds in public and technical services worked together to share their expertise, culminating in a learning visit by an AUAF …

Devising A Classification Scheme For Islam: Opinions Of Lis And Islamic Studies Scholars, Haroon Idrees, Khalid Mahmood
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries use classification systems to arrange library materials in a logical order and provide users better access. Formal structured classification systems have been developed for this purpose. Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Charles Ammi Cutter's Expansive Classification (EC), The Subject Classification (SC) of James Duff Brown, Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), Henry E. Bliss's Bibliographic Classification (BC), and S. R. Ranganathan's Colon Classification (CC) are internationally known standard library classification systems. All these systems lack proper placement and coverage of materials being published on topics relevant to Islam. Islam is an area of extensive publication activity. Therefore, …
