The Role Of Libraries In The Fight Against Corruption, Ganiyu Idowu Buhari, Rotimi Adesina Egunjobi Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Corruption is simply a misuse of entrusted authority for personal benefit of self, family, friends and those who by rules do not deserve or qualify to get the benefit of that authority. The phenomenon which has been described as a universal one, presents itself in different forms like embezzlement, bribery, nepotism in public sector recruitment, promotion and access to public service, cronyism, vote-buying, political patronage, and judicial corruption. The effects of this phenomenon on the society are so monumental that a common platformmust be found to wage war against it, if our country’s plan for economic growth and development must …

The Gulf Coast Lgbt Radio And Television Digitization Project: Providing Equitable Access To Houston’S Lgbtq Broadcast History, Emily Vinson, Bethany Scott
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Initiated in 2020 with a multi-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access, The Gulf Coast LGBT Radio and Television Digitization Project aimed to digitize and preserve thousands of hours of LGBTQ broadcast history from the Houston, Texas area. Through meticulous inventorying, digitization, redaction, transcription, publication, promotion, and preservation processes, the project team navigated the delicate balance between equitable access and copyright compliance. The selected programs encapsulate decades of LGBTQ life and culture, covering a diverse array of topics crucial to understanding the community’s evolution in the region.

Reading The Rainbow Together: A Workshop On Lgbtqia+ Themes And Identities In Library Collections, Alicia G. Vaandering, Amanda Melilli, James W. Rosenzwing
Public Services Faculty Presentations
Although libraries are facing a substantial increase in book challenges that disproportionately target queer books, many librarians have had limited opportunities for professional development in understanding queer representation in library collections. In this workshop, participants will use the Rainbow Representation Rubric to analyze queer narratives and identities in brief example texts (book reviews and picture books). The presenters will guide participants in discussions that prepare them to support their communities by developing collections that capture the true diversity of queer experiences.
Rupert Raj’S Written Acts Of Activism And Care Throughout The 1980s And 1990s, Mia Jakobsen
Rupert Raj’S Written Acts Of Activism And Care Throughout The 1980s And 1990s, Mia Jakobsen
Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism
In researching acts of activism and care in Canadian queer and trans racialized history, I examined how Rupert Raj advocated and cared for other trans individuals through his writing in the 1980s and 1990s. He noticed that there were few publications for trans individuals so he created easily accessible methods to share vital information regarding research and support that would have otherwise been difficult to acquire. Raj’s writings shared vital transgender research, literature, and expertise from across the globe. He provided critical support to and for other trans men through his easily accessible publications and letters, serving as an information …

Artificial Intelligence In Special Libraries In Africa For Selective Dissemination Of Information: Any Need?, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study applied a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 48 special librarians selected through purposive sampling techniques from 24 special libraries in Africa. The study was guided by four research objectives. The main instrument used for data collection was a 4 point scaled questionnaires scaled in that 1 = “strongly disagree” and 4 = “strongly agree”. The instrument was validated by three experts in measurement and evaluation from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria and further subjected to internal consistency test using Cronbach’s alpha. Result was coefficient α=.80 showing that the instrument was reliable. Data administration and …

Building Empathy Through Storytelling: A Living Library Program Focused On Women’S Health, Jess King, Belinda Boelter, Catherine Medici-Thiemann
Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
An academic health sciences library hosted a grant-funded living library program titled “Bringing Stories of Women’s Health to the Forefront.” With a campus that is increasingly focused on incorporating the humanities into medical education, the library added to this momentum by offering a program which encouraged empathy through the art of storytelling. The program was delivered via three routes: an in-person event for the city’s metro community, a virtual event for the university community and their clinical partners, and oral interview video recordings that are hosted on the library website. In order to host a successful event that met the …

Evidence Synthesis And Graduate Researchers: Benefits And Barriers, Corinne Bishop, Sarah Norris, Jason D. Phillips
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Detailed Description:
With the increased interest in evidence synthesis research in social sciences and fields outside of the health sciences, more librarians are actively involved in consulting and collaborating with researchers, with some also participating as co-authors on projects (Chapman, 2021; Kogut, Ramirez, & Foster, 2022). Based on individual requests, librarians may conduct comprehensives searches, document and report searches to ensure reproducibility, and/or assist with question refinement, protocol development, citation management tools, and evidence synthesis software.
To support evidence synthesis researchers, libraries are identifying support models and deciding on the scope of assistance they can provide. Within this process, …

Reframing Information Seeking In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Critical And Humanistic Approach, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Reframing Information Seeking In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Critical And Humanistic Approach, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Library Faculty Research
Information-seeking has long been the subject of theoretical modeling, often drawing from cognitive, behavioral, computational, and even evolutionary perspectives to explain how individuals navigate, filter, and utilize information. Several dominant frameworks—Carol Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, Marcia Bates’ Berrypicking Model, Peter Pirolli & Stuart Card’s Information Foraging Theory, Kiyohiko Nakamura’s Information Criteria framework, and Ian Ruthven’s Information Shaping Theory —have provided structured ways of understanding how people interact with information environments. However, while these frameworks offer valuable insights, they often operate within mechanistic or efficiency-driven paradigms, which risk overlooking the complex, embodied, and socioculturally situated nature of human information behaviors. These …

[In the absence of an abstract the opening of the editorial is presented.] Librarians working in technical services have long had opportunities to automate portions of their work. Attitudes about doing so, however, have been mixed. Automation comes with enhanced needs for human-mediated quality control. With this long-standing and somewhat fraught relationship in mind, we began discussing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM) tools and their implications for writing and reviewing in Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS) back in 2023.

Is There A Librarian In The House? Researching Federal And Virginia State Health Law, Andrew J. Christensen
Library Scholarship
Health law is a complex and diverse practice area, encompassing issues ranging from insurance law and patient privacy to medical malpractice and vaccine law. Researching health law thus entails a combination of primary and secondary resources, statutory and regulatory updates, and often a nuanced or multijurisdictional understanding of healthcare policy. For both career specialists and lawyers who are new to the field, finding accurate, current information on both federal and state-specific health laws is critical.
Luckily, the librarian is in. This guide highlights key resources and practical strategies for effectively researching federal and Virginia health law, tailored to legal practitioners …

Interview: Deborah Parker On Becoming Belle Da Costa Greene, Jen Hoyer

In November 2024, Deborah Parker and I spoke in detail about her new book, Becoming Belle Da Costa Greene, for an episode on the New Books Network Library Science podcast. We are grateful to RBM for letting us put together a complementary written interview that explores a different set of broader themes. While our audio interview is focused on Parker’s analysis of Greene’s correspondence with Bernard Berenson, this print discussion looks at the bigger picture of Greene’s place in special collections librarianship, her growth as a professional, and how we might do research on important individuals in the history of …
