Student Information Use And Decision-Making In Innovation Competitions And The Impact Of Librarian Interventions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

At a large Midwestern university, librarians work closely with an annual undergraduate agricultural innovation competition to guide students through the process of conducting market research and assessing patentability. In 2018, the authors conducted an exploratory study using focus groups of students who had participated in that year’s competition in order to learn how students find and use information in a competition setting, to evaluate the impact of library support on the students’ success, and inform further assessment activities. Results showed that students used information from the library and from their own research, notably seeking out first-hand expertise, to practice evidence-based …

Therefore, this paper investigates the knowledge sharing behaviours and patterns of Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Students of National Institute of Construction Technology, Uromi. The descriptive survey method was used. Questionnaire responses from 27 students were analysed to address questions related to how knowledge is shared between students and what motivates students to share knowledge. The study highlighted the barriers in knowledge …

The Chi square value is 225.65 which is higher than the table value in the analysis of Lotka's law. The square root of total authors, who have contributed 7.94 % of the total contribution, is found to be 255.52 in Price square Root Law. The …

Journals Bibliometric Portfolios; Case Of Nursing Research, Helena Blazun Vošner Phd, Peter Kokol Prof Nov 2019

Journals Bibliometric Portfolios; Case Of Nursing Research, Helena Blazun Vošner Phd, Peter Kokol Prof

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Number of journals is raising exponentially. Consequently authors have a problem which journal to select when publishing their research. Journal portfolios including information like impact factors and productivity trends, state of the art topics, topics evolution and citation patterns might help authors to select the journal where their paper will have optimal chances to be published, read and cited. To build portfolios we used two approaches; namely descriptive bibliometric analysis to extract distribution of types of documents, most prolific authors, institutions, countries, citation histories, etc. and bibliometric mapping to visualize the content

Our study showed that journals portfolios can improve …

Analysis Of Scholarly Publications On Bronchitis At Global Perspective: A Metric Study, S.Roselin Jahina, Dr. M.Sadik Batcha Nov 2019

Analysis Of Scholarly Publications On Bronchitis At Global Perspective: A Metric Study, S.Roselin Jahina, Dr. M.Sadik Batcha

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This research paper examines the validity of the use of bibliometric law for research on bronchitis literature worldwide. The various bibliometric laws of the lotka’s law and Zipf's law in their mathematical expressions often present difficulties in adapting the observed values. The result indicates that the author's productivity according to Lotka's law is consistent with research on bronchitis literature worldwide. The law of the price square root is not applicable with the author's productivity information. Zipf’s law was applied to identify publications about the frequency of word occurrence.

Global Research Trend On Cyber Security: A Scientometric Analysis, Somesh Rai, Kunwar Singh Dr, Akhilesh Kumar Varma

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Scientometrics is a quantitative analysis of scholarly literature related to a particular subject or area (well defined by some limits, scope and coverage), which helps to understand different aspects about the scholarly literature’s growth in various dimensions of knowledge. Similarly, this study is a quantitative analysis of the Global research trends in cyber security. Some works related to scientometrics of ‘deception, counter-deception in cyberspace’ had been published in 2011, but we have focused on ‘cyber security’ as the topic of research. For analysis we have utilised the published data available in Scopus database, which is directly related to ‘cyber security’. …

Open Letter(S) On Open Access, Ingrid D. Becker, John G. Dove Oct 2019

Open Letter(S) On Open Access, Ingrid D. Becker, John G. Dove

Charleston Library Conference

It is well known that one major obstacle to achieving open access (OA) is misunderstanding among stakeholders; some say it is the biggest problem of all. Throughout the supply-chain of producing and consuming scholarly literature, many participants—especially authors—understand the broader objectives of OA but not the practical steps they can take to help increase the accessibility of research. The purpose of “Open Letter(s) on Open Access” (OLOA) is to provide initial examples of communications that illustrate such steps. We do so by examining sets of well-regarded academic sources and evaluating the various paths that authors choose as a means of …

International Copyright In Historical Context: Who Are The Real Pirates?, Paul G. St-Pierre Oct 2019

International Copyright In Historical Context: Who Are The Real Pirates?, Paul G. St-Pierre

Charleston Library Conference

Copyright is usually justified with arguments about defending the natural right of authors to control their creations, or claims that limited monopolies spur innovation for the greater good of society. I contrarily assert that the primary intent of copyright has generally been to protect powerful industries in advanced countries and ensure control over emerging markets that rely on the importation of intellectual property.

As global trade expanded in the 19th century, a patchwork quilt of domestic copyright laws and bilateral treaties failed to stem rampant infringement that hurt publishers’ export revenues. Re-printers and readers, however, benefited from lower prices. The …

This paper will provide perspectives from five librarians at the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida (UF): the senior associate dean responsible for collections, the chair of the Acquisitions & Collections …

Springing For Student Textbooks? Exploring New Directions For Library Collections, Alexandria C. Quesenberry, Paul C. Gahn, G. Randall Watts

Charleston Library Conference

Given the increasing costs of student textbooks, it is only natural that students would engage in cost-avoidance behaviors. Likewise, some professors have modified their curricular choices to avoid passing along the cost of required texts for their students. At the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the library has licensed several databases that include access to a number of assigned student textbooks. While the provision of these textbooks was not the intent in the licensing of these resources, it is an added benefit of the subscription and their availability is appreciated by the students who may avoid individual purchases. Because …

This paper considers whether American exceptionalism has reduced the standing of the United States in the world—and whether it has impacted our ability to remain innovative. The paper is based on my presentation on a panel on this theme at the Charleston Conference 2018. The panel considered key international social issues in which Americans have become outliers, such as climate change, health care, and gun control. It also focused on research in the cultural heritage sector. Here I expand on my remarks about the origins of exceptionalism and its possible impact on libraries, archives, and museums. Taking History And Vital Signs: Characterizing History Of Medicine Efforts At Academic Medical Centers, Jordan Johnson, Kristine M. Alpi, Meg Langford

Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA Annual Meeting

To characterize efforts surrounding HOM/HS communities across the U.S., we identified the top thirty medical schools in both primary care and research using U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Rankings. We searched and browsed the websites provided by the institutions to collect information pertaining to any presence of an on-campus HOM/HS community. Upon identifying an HOM/HS community, we collected information about the group’s mission; the funding of the group; the membership structure; the typical activities and initiatives; the library’s involvement with the group; and any course offerings related to HOM/HS at the institution.
FINDINGS: Several institutions appeared in both rankings, …
