Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole
OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions
Are you being bogged down by copyright? Are you getting all the access you deserve? Eastern Kentucky University Libraries recently developed and implemented a new copyright policy for interlibrary loan that forgoes the outdated CONTU Guidelines or "Rule of Five" to more closely comply with Copyright Law and leverage Fair Use.
In this session, the presenters will discuss the inspiration behind abandoning CONTU, the process for obtaining approval from library and university stakeholders, and the impact of a new copyright policy on interlibrary loan workflows and collection development decisions. Participants will also engage in a discussion of the opportunities and …
Using Curriculum Mapping As A Tool To Align The Information Literacy And Evidence-Based Research Learning Outcomes In Nursing Curriculum, Jane Wu
Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In This Together: Challenges And Opportunities For Collaborative Health Sciences Collection Development, Ana Corral, Stefanie Lapka
Library Faculty Research
An ideal objective of collection management is the development of a library collection that meets the needs of users and in the case of university libraries, the academic and research needs of a campus community. But in today’s technology-driven, budget-conscious environment, collection development at academic health sciences libraries can present challenging issues for those responsible, especially librarians new to collection development or whose primary responsibilities are situated elsewhere. Issues include gaining familiarity with institutional collection development and purchasing processes, selector collaboration, managing multiple library locations, acquiring non-traditional material, and developing more diverse and inclusive collections.
This paper will present an …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Digital information created for pedagogical and research purposes is gaining traction, and there is a growing interest within academic institutions to gather, archive, and provide value-added services based on this content. The term "institutional repository" refers to a novel system for storing and sharing digital academic works produced by students and teachers at different educational institutions. It was conceived as a solution to the issues plaguing the present model of scholarly communication, which is dominated by for-profit journal publishers and suppliers. Libraries will need to hire librarians with knowledge of digital collection management and the Open Archive Information System (OAIS) …

This editorial was written to accompany cover art submitted to the American Chemical Society's 2023 ACS Diversity & Inclusion Cover Art Series, and selected as the July cover for Environmental Science & Technology Letters. The artwork design features several prominent chemists who are also strong advocates for increasing the number of Native American/First Nation scientists. They recognize how cultural beliefs may often be in conflict with scientific conversations, but have been working to attract and encourage Native American talent in the STEM fields.
The published cover art is included as a supplemental file.

As seems to be the new normal, there is a lot happening in the news (*gestures vaguely around*). It’s easy to focus on a few issues at the expense of others or to get overwhelmed and check out entirely. But there is one issue that keeping tabs on feels like a professional obligation: book banning.

The Changing Perceptions Of Public Libraries, Aleisha A. Stout
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In 2018, OCLC and the American Library Association revisited a 2008 survey on the perception of public libraries. Questions looked at how participants believed libraries are funded, used, and perceived. Public libraries are valued by the public, even as perceptions move away from core aspects of library services. In-person library visits and visits to library websites have declined in recent years. Strong libraries are perceived to raise property values within a community. Libraries increasingly manage social problems, such as homelessness and substance abuse. Some libraries have social workers on staff to meet patrons at the point of need. Public libraries …

How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.
Library staff had no previous practices in place to record whether content was peer reviewed or not. The initial request seemed simple, yetbecame increasingly complex to create both …
