Academic Branch Libraries, Robert A. Seal Jan 1986

Academic Branch Libraries, Robert A. Seal

University Libraries: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Few issues in academic librarianship inspire as much controversy as the branch or departmental library. At the center of this controversy is the question of whether or not collections should be centralized in the main university library or located in part in separate branch libraries. Although vigorously debated since the beginning of this century, the centralization-decentralization dilemma became even more of an issue following World War II, when college and university enrollments and academic libraries began to grow at unprecedented rates and the pressure for adequate library services and collections increased. This particular issue has never been resolved completely, nor …

Legal Records And Historical Gossip: The Records Of The Social Historian, Thomas F. Armstrong Jan 1986

Legal Records And Historical Gossip: The Records Of The Social Historian, Thomas F. Armstrong

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Historians who venture beyond the traditional realms of political or diplomatic history find themselves similarly venturing beyond traditional sources for their history. This has been particularly true of the social historian, who undertakes the elusive task of understanding "history from the bottom up," or history of the "inarticulate." In looking beyond those traditional sources, all manner of evidence is legitimate, subject to the usual rules of verification and professional scrutiny. For the historian tempted to use court records, there are realities with which to cope, but much enlightenment for the persistent. Initially, the court and the court records represent an …

Evaluation And Model Of A Clinical Librarian Program, Elizabeth King Eaton Jan 1986

Evaluation And Model Of A Clinical Librarian Program, Elizabeth King Eaton

Library Staff Publications

Clinical medical librarianship is entering its second decade, but little evaluative data has accrued in the literature. Variations from the original programs and novel new approaches have insured the survival of the program so far. The clinical librarian (CL) forms a vital link between the library and the health care professional, operating as an important information transfer agent. However, to further insure the survival of these vital programs, hard evaluative evidence is needed. The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston began a CL Program in 1978/79. An extensive three-year pre/post evaluation study was conducted using a specifically developed …
