Jewish Music Sound Recording Collections In The United States, Judith S. Pinnolis
Jewish Music Sound Recording Collections In The United States, Judith S. Pinnolis
Faculty Works
This chapter examines several significant Jewish music sound-recording collections in the United States, most of which originated as private collections but are now housed at academic institutions. Their origins provide insight into individual agency tied to different understandings of Jewish music. A discussion of their complexities from a library-science perspective focuses on conservation and preservation as well as bibliographic control and other issues in which the complexities of Jewish music unfold more clearly. Authenticity, comprehensiveness, and other constructions demonstrate how sound-recording collections reflect the overall difficulties of defining and delimiting Jewish music. Subsequent discussions and observations on access and audiences …

Promoting Library Cultures: The Roles Of Libraries In Human Resources Development In Bangladesh, Md. Aktarul Islam, Md. Habibur Rahman
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Since the library is the paramount destination for obtaining knowledge and information, it has been a matter of great regret that the culture of pursuing lifelong learning programs through libraries remains unstressed and unfamiliar in Bangladesh. People from all walks of life have not felt the necessity of going to libraries to seek information and obtain knowledge to solve their day-to-day affairs and resolve other problematic issues. The tradition of reading, learning, and researching is still in a deplorable state, and to this end, the development and expansion of “Library Culture” is too slow to fulfill the information needs of …

Advancing Research Visibility Through Collections: A Case Study From Nursing, Travis Nace
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
Temple University Libraries' scholarly repository, TUScholarShare, began in 2020 and is a relatively young scholarly repository with growth potential in many subject areas. Travis Nace, the nursing liaison librarian, noticed an area for potential growth: nursing-produced posters were noticeably absent from the repository. No specific community or sub-community (collections) were focused on nursing research and scholarly publications despite much being produced at Temple University.
In the spring of 2022 discussion began to create a nursing specific community. Talks were scheduled with Temple University Hospital nurse educators to obtain posters presented between 2015 and 2020. These were seen as a good …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
Developing an efficient and cost-effective method for providing access to legacy print theses and dissertations is a challenge faced by many libraries that serve medical schools and other academic health science programs. The significant staff time and financial cost associated with systematically digitizing and providing complete online access to print theses and dissertations can be problematic given the potentially limited return on that investment as reflected in patron use statistics and other metrics. This presentation will describe how a medical school library improved the discoverability and accessibility of its legacy print theses and dissertations by implementing a cost-effective, selective digitization …

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
The role of libraries at universities has grown over the years in surprising ways to improve service to the academic and student community. One such surprising change came from a project aimed at decreasing period poverty. The Period Equity Movement (PEM) was created in collaboration with the university’s Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion through funding that came from a $48,000 Sustainability Fee grant and other internal funding. The grant specifically focused on purchasing reusable products such as menstrual cups and fabric pads and organic disposable tampons and pads. Reading Perceptions Of Intrinsically Motivated High School Juniors, Judy Henning, Sherry R. Crow
Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications
Studies show pleasure reading results in academic benefits but declines between elementary and secondary years. The question addressed is “what are the experiences in the lives of juniors (aged 16-18) that foster intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure?” Juniors from four mid-western U.S. schools with varied ethnic and socio-economic profiles were identified as highly and distinctly intrinsically motivated for pleasure reading. Interviews revealed participants excelled academically and had family members who were readers. They read to escape stress, occupy time, and investigate careers. Rarely reading for rewards, they were “opportunistic readers.” Relationships with librarians were important in finding good books …
