Meaning In The Spaces: Archivists' Impact On The Historical Record, Ruth E. Bryan Oct 2015

Meaning In The Spaces: Archivists' Impact On The Historical Record, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

Archives and “the archives” are culturally-specific places and materials. In the same way, both individual archivists and users of archives are situated in specific, often different, contexts of culture and identity. Archives are also spaces where researchers encounter sources for creating history. Thus, as both archival professionals and users of archival material, the meanings we construct for ourselves through understanding our past can be thought of as being constantly generated in the ever-changing spaces within and across archival sources, where individual donors, archivists, and researchers, archival professional standards, daily practical needs, and repositories’ organizational missions interact and interrelate. Because each …

The Importance Of Highly Effective School Library Media Programs On School Learning Environments, Alexandra M. Juch

EDL Sixth Year Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of a previously identified successful school library program (SLMP) in a Connecticut public school. The primary goals of this research are to answer these questions by conducting a single case study to examine the nature of this previously identified SLMP so that promising practices identified from this study can be applied to other SLMPs in Connecticut public schools. The data collection methods embodied both qualitative and quantitative instruments that included surveys, interviews and documents. Scholarly Communication Coaching: Liaison Librarians' Shifting Roles, Todd Bruns, John Stephen Brantley, Kirstin Duffin

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

Two and a half decades into the open access (OA) movement, rapid changes in scholarly communication are creating significant demands on scholars. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. These demands present an opportunity and a need for librarians to step …

Wisconsin School For Girls Inmate Record Books: A Case Study Of Redacted Digitization, Eric Willey, Laura Farley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The Wisconsin School for Girls collection housed in the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) archives contains a variety of documents from the institution’s period of operation. Inmates who were admitted to the institution were predominately juvenile females at the time of the records’ creation; because of this, the contents of the records are protected by Wisconsin state statutes, which mandate restricted access for patrons as well as limitations on the use of the information contained within the records. This article examines how the restrictions on the collection continue to protect the privacy of the inmates and their descendants, what procedures WHS …

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope Sep 2015

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope

Charleston Library Conference

When the faculty of the College of Staten Island, CUNY (CSI) introduced a new baccalaureate level program in East Asian Studies the library faced the challenge of evaluating the adequacy of its holdings to support the program and its future development. Multidisciplinary fields of study (e.g., East Asian Studies) that pertain to a specific geographical or cultural area present a unique set of evaluative issues because their subject content cannot be confined to set classification ranges, rendering the traditional methods of collection analysis inadequate. This poster will present the results of an evaluation of CSI’s East Asian Studies collection, discuss …

Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict Sep 2015

Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The complexity and size of geospatial data can constrain the capabilities of service providers and create risks to the long term preservation and archiving of valuable information assets. While services oriented architectures such as the Earth Data Analysis Center's Geographic Storage, Transformation and Retrieval Engine (GSToRE1) facilitate increased use and impact of geospatial data by mitigating these complexities through the development of dynamic applications and interfaces, such services can often be primarily focused on the maintenance and delivery of only the most current versions of geospatial data that may nonetheless possess significant historical, cultural, or scientific value. Actions and documentation …

Web 2.0 Technologies Application In Teaching And Learning By Makerere University Academic Staff, Constant Okello-Obura, Francis Ssekitto

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has become a general trend in virtually all professions including the academia. Professionals in the academia are adopting ICTs with a view of offering the services that they have traditionally provided without these technologies so as to attain their strategic academic objectives. Since 2004, the Makerere University has taken up ICTs as a strategic enabler to fulfill the Makerere University’s strategic objectives (Makerere University, 2014).
