Book Review: Social Justice Design And Implementation In Library And Information Science Edited By Bharat Mehra, Ellie F. Kawada
School of Information Student Research Journal
Social Justice Design and Implementation in Library and Information Science, edited by Bharat Mehra, is an engaging volume that explores the pursuit of social justice in its many forms in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). The included chapters cover case studies of social justice implementation in library services, theoretical frameworks for subversive methods of research and education, and the future of library advocacy for social justice. While the volume is centered on English-speaking countries and lacks the perspective of paraprofessional library staff, the themes and examples presented in the book are invaluable to any LIS students, professionals, …

Leveraging Student Specialties For Innovative Digital Commons Exhibits, Madison Price, Sara Decaro
Faculty Submissions
In this presentation, Madison Price and Sara DeCaro of Pittsburg State University will cover their unique projects created with Digital Commons Exhibits, what inspired them, and how they incorporated student employees into their workflow. Pittsburg State’s location in southeast Kansas has been home to historically significant institutions like the Haldeman-Julius Publishing Company, an internationally-known leftist press, and artists such as Gordon Parks and Eva Jessye.
PSU’s collection of 2,000 Haldeman-Julius printing plates presented a quandary for Special Collections, until one student’s interest in them prompted this question: could the plates still be used? The result was multiple collaborations across PSU’s …

Beyond The Stacks: Borrowing Of Immersive Technologies And Smart Eco Systems To Reimagine Libraries., Vuppala Lingaiah
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This theoretical Chapter explores the paradigm shift of knowledge access, user experience, and institutional viability through the integration of immersive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), within the new paradigm of funky libraries, and how these technologies are changing knowledge access, user experiences, and the institutional sustainability of various library environments. Methodology: The research approach is non-empirical and exploratory-conceptual, based on a synthesis of systematic literature, thematic clustering of the existing literature, and theoretical critique of recent peer-reviewed findings. The chapter is based on more …

Exploring The Landscape Of Indian Library And Information Science Journals: A Bibliometric Perspective On Publication Productivity And Authorship Patterns, Shiva Kumara S U, Sampath Kumar Bt
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present study aims to ascertain the publication productivity, authorship patterns, and the Degree of collaboration in two Indian Library and Information Science (LIS) journals. The related data was extracted from two LIS journals viz., “Annals of Library and Information Studies” (ALIS) and “DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology” (DJLIT). The study findings show that there is a gradual decline in the number of publications published in both journals from 2015 to 2022. It is also noticed that collaborative research is on the rise in LIS literature and two-authored papers are the most common. The average degree of collaboration …

Open Pedagogy In Practice: Using Shareable Consultation Worksheets To Promote Equitable Research Learning, Stephanie E. Ard
All Things Open
One-on-one library research consultations provide valuable support, but it can be challenging for students to recall everything discussed once the meeting is over. To help students continue building their skills after a session, I created a shared, editable online worksheet that captures search strategies, keywords, potential resources, and next steps in one document. Students retain access to their worksheets in Microsoft OneDrive and can choose to share them with peers, allowing the documents to function as open, reusable learning tools that support transparency, student agency, and ongoing engagement, particularly for those who may not be able to return for a …

Free To Read, Free To Publish: Library Publishing And Global Scholarly Communication, Jonathan D. Grunert
All Things Open
Open access is a right exercised by scholars and their institutions, not a privilege granted by publishers. From this perspective, library publishing is not peripheral to the open access movement but a necessary extension, and when libraries take on publishing roles, they reclaim functions long outsourced to commercial actors and re-center scholarly communication within academic communities. The partnership among libraries, institutions, and researchers is foundational to the production, evaluation, and sharing of knowledge. Library publishing shows that open access can be sustainable and scholar-driven without reliance on paywalls, article processing charges, or exclusivity.
Since 2014, library publishing has evolved from …

How Can Librarians In Developing Countries Apply Evidence-Based Information Practices To Enhance Library Services In The Digital Era? A Scoping Review, Jackline Estomihi Kiwelu, Martha Lyaka, Patrick Ngulube
Libraries
This scoping review maps existing literature on how librarians in developing countries apply evidence-based information practice (EBIP), identifying key themes and evidence gaps for future research. The review followed Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage framework and applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 checklist alongside the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme for appraising study quality. From 6,693 records retrieved, ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The mapped studies suggest that librarians apply EBIP in diverse professional activities such as collection development, advocacy, reference services, information literacy instruction, decision-making, evaluation, monitoring performance, and enhancing service quality. Evidence-based approaches were …

Electronic Book Acquisition Strategies In Academic Libraries: A Review Of The Literature, Rachel E. Scott, Michael A. Arthur
Electronic Book Acquisition Strategies In Academic Libraries: A Review Of The Literature, Rachel E. Scott, Michael A. Arthur
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Electronic book (e-book) acquisition models have evolved over the decades they have been available to library customers. This review leverages findings from scholarly literature to document the proliferation and evolution of e-book acquisitions models, their strengths and weaknesses in various contexts, and their role in the collection development strategies of academic libraries. From firm orders and subscription packages to demand-driven and evidence-based acquisitions, engagement with e-book acquisitions models varies considerably based on factors such as library budget and staffing, institutional curriculum and programs, consortial affiliations, support for textbook affordability initiatives, and COVID-19 responses. The findings from this literature review suggest …

Reconstruction Of Information System Acceptance Model In The Era Of Integrated Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Literature Review, Ilham, Merlin Apriliyanti
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study aims to explain the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which has driven significant transformations in the development and use of information systems. However, most classical information system acceptance models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and (UTAUT), have not been able to fully explain the unique characteristics of AI-based systems that are autonomous, adaptive, and complex. This study aims to reconstruct the information system acceptance model in the era of integrated AI through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. This study was conducted using the PRISMA protocol on 130 leading scientific articles indexed by Scopus and …

Unearthing "Storied Lives:" Building Resilient And Recontextualized Collections At Unh Library Through Community Archives Collaborations, Kai H. Uchida, Eleta Exline, Morgan Wilson
Faculty Publications
A strength of the University Archives at the University of New Hampshire is its strong administrative and institutional history collections through the mid 20th century, with hundreds of linear feet of manuscripts from offices across campus. However, some of these collections were processed more than 30 years ago and are missing descriptive work that would ideally highlight communities of color on campus and their inclusion and self-advocacy in the history of higher education.
In the absence of resources that would prioritize reprocessing these collections, the University Archives has partnered with the Digital Collections Team at UNH to broaden the access …
Graduate Student Supervision And Artificial Intelligence: Findings From Academic Faculty Interviews Across Disciplines, Kari D. Weaver, Nadine Fladd
Graduate Student Supervision And Artificial Intelligence: Findings From Academic Faculty Interviews Across Disciplines, Kari D. Weaver, Nadine Fladd
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
There is widespread discussion in higher education about the potential implications of GenAI for research and writing tasks (George, 2023). Many graduate students are under intense pressure to finish their degree milestones in a timely manner, and these rapidly evolving technologies offer the potential to optimize and automate much of the research and writing process. But the ethical, developmental, and career implications of graduate students – both masters’ and doctoral – using these technologies requires particularly careful consideration, as these students are simultaneously learners, scholars, and, sometimes, educators. Although emerging research about GenAI use in higher education has examined the …
Teaching Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: Practical Instructional Design Approaches For Graduate Students, Nicholas D. Bambach
Teaching Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: Practical Instructional Design Approaches For Graduate Students, Nicholas D. Bambach
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Across the social and health sciences, evidence-based practice (EBP) serves as a cornerstone of professional education and links research-based knowledge to real-world decision-making. Students are expected to integrate empirical findings with client needs, ethical considerations, and professional best practices. Yet many graduate students struggle to translate theoretical concepts into applied practice. Academic librarians, particularly those serving as subject liaisons and specialists, are well positioned to partner with social work faculty to design scaffolded instructional experiences that integrate research literacy with social work’s ethical and humanistic frameworks. Through librarian–faculty partnerships, librarians can help students critically engage with research evidence while honoring …

From Research To Writing: How Collaboration Strengthens Thesis Preparation, Carly Mcleod, Ben Lee Taylor
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Graduate students have unique learning needs that often require simultaneous support from multiple service areas to be successful. From navigating scholarly sources to developing strong academic writing skills, students benefit most when guidance is provided at critical points through intentional collaboration and shared expertise.
In response to a faculty request for supplementary workshops for mechanical engineering students, the Teaching and Learning unit within the library partnered with the Writing and Academic Skills Centre to design timely instruction that aligns with students’ academic goals as they enter the thesis preparation stage. Rather than delivering separate sessions, we recognized this would be …
