Conducting reference consultations via videoconferencing not only offers many benefits to student researchers it also presents an opportunity for librarians to embrace a learner-centered teaching mindset when approaching remote consultations by developing consultation learning goals in alignment with the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Designing consultations to be learner-centered yields benefits for students such as the student actively practicing their own searches as well as more thorough source evaluation. Additionally, videoconferencing technology allows for a more seamless information sharing …

To The Side, To The Side: Academic Libraries And Libguides Layout Adoption, Chris Neuhaus, Anne Marie Gruber, Angie Cox, Hyunseung Koh, Jim Kelly, Claire Bowling, Gail Bunz

Faculty Publications

In 2014, Springshare introduced a new LibGuides layout option. In addition to the traditional horizontally-tabbed layout (top navigation), LibGuides designers now have the option of vertically-arrayed tabs on the upper left-hand side of the page (side 10 navigation). Like the university hosting this study, schools have, to varying degrees, shifted their LibGuides toward side navigation and away from top navigation. To better understand the research behind this migration, researchers at the University of Northern Iowa conducted a thorough literature review on navigation menu location preferences and navigation menu efficacy within the field of librarianship and computer science. This review identified …

Prison Librarianship And Lis Schools: Is There A Career-Path?, Patrick J. Raftery Jr

Urban Library Journal

Library Information Science research has inquired and advocated for prison librarianship since as far back as the 1930s. While most of the articles published focus on the problems facing these institutional libraries, (budgets, censorship, best practices, and standards), very few focus on the preparations LIS schools take to prepare and promote prison librarianship. For many years’ civilians, not professional librarians, operated prison libraries. Although the rise in professional librarians in prison libraries has grown, has the preparation and quality of professionally trained institutional/prison librarians changed? Previous research states LIS schools often overlook or ignore institutional/prison librarianship. This article explores past …

Improving Reference Statistics Gathering Across The Library, Lauren Dubell Nov 2021

Improving Reference Statistics Gathering Across The Library, Lauren Dubell

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials

Reference statistics gathering at the Leatherby Libraries was revamped with the development of new predefined questions and question categories to allow all public-facing departments to enter their reference transactions into the LibAnswers software. Although gathering reference transactions was more organized across the library, the predefined questions were too detailed and confusing. As a result of this assessment, the predefined questions will be removed to allow users to focus on determining if their transaction is a reference question rather than which predefined questions they should use, which will make the reference statistics more accurate.

The Research Information Management in the United States two-part report series provides a first-of-its-kind documentation of RIM practices at US research universities that presents a thorough examination of RIM practices, goals, stakeholders, and system components.

Research information management (RIM) is a rapidly growing area of investment in US research universities. While RIM practices are mature in Europe and other locales in support of nationalized reporting requirements, RIM practices at US research universities have taken a different—and characteristically decentralized—course. A complex environment characterized by multiple use cases, stakeholders, and systems has resulted.

This report provides a landscape overview of the state …

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

While not a new phenomenon, impostor syndrome is still a relatively new topic among library professionals. Though prior studies for other professions exist, impostor syndrome in the library profession was not extensively researched until 2014. As the world fights the current global pandemic, new questions about impostor syndrome and work-from-home strategies arise. This article reviews the early history of impostor syndrome research, explores impostor syndrome research related to library professionals and work during an ongoing public health emergency, considers ways to combat the phenomenon, and suggests next steps.

WRL Faculty Scholarship

Integrating formal management training into library school curriculum has been a topic of discussion for years, with varying progress. And in our experience, librarians are rarely given formal training on the job before becoming managers. We need to find ways to support new managers, helping them to acquire skills to handle the interpersonal, economic, and political challenges. Human Resources departments can provide valuable training in policy and procedures of the organization, but libraries have unique management challenges that may not exist elsewhere on campus. Librarians may be asked to manage faculty, staff, and student workers. They may need to arrange …

The Kenya Libraries and Information Services Consortium (KLISC) has been at the forefront of championing and spearheading Open Access initiatives in Kenya. The National consortium — which boasts over 130 member institutions through a combination of university libraries, research institutions, and public/national libraries — was established in 2003 with an aim of collective subscriptions to electronic resources to cope with the increasingly unsustainable cost of information resources. All members pay a certain amount of money every year towards the acquisition of electronic journals and eBooks, depending on and guided by their FTE’s. This means that institutions with lower FTE’s get …

Globally, the RIM ecosystem is quite mature in locales where national research assessment exercises like the United Kingdom’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) require institutions to collect and report on the outputs of institutional research. A pan-European community of practice is led by euroCRIS.

This report describes six discrete RIM use cases detailed in the companion report:
