Islamic Scholarly Publishing And A Comparative Analysis Of Religious Publications In The National Bibliography Of Nigeria, Sirajudeen Bakrin, Sirajudeen Femi Bakrin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Religious publishing is not strange to the knowledge production community of the human race. However, Islamic publishing has been problematic either in Nigeria or elsewhere in the globe. The data for the study was obtained from the National Bibliography of Nigeria which aggregates the bibliographic records of publications produced in the country annually. A total of 1,992 entries within the …

Citizen Web Archivists: Applying Web Archiving As A Pedagogical Tool, Kayla Harris, Christina A. Beis, Stephanie Shreffler Jan 2022

Citizen Web Archivists: Applying Web Archiving As A Pedagogical Tool, Kayla Harris, Christina A. Beis, Stephanie Shreffler

Marian Library Faculty Publications

Librarians and archivists preserve information on the Internet through web archiving, but undergraduate students may not have considered that information on the Internet is not always permanent. The asynchronous program, Citizen Web Archiving: Preserving Websites for the Common Good, taught students what web archiving is, why it’s important, the ethics of collecting information on the Internet, and how they could contribute to the historical record by archiving websites they deemed important via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. The results suggest further opportunities for involving undergraduate students with web archiving initiatives at institutions, and using web archiving as a pedagogical tool.

No Such Thing As A Bad Question: Using Rubrics To Help Students Learn From And Strengthen Failed Research Questions, Kathleen Baril, Justine Post, Bethany Spieth

Heterick Faculty Scholarship

This chapter uses findings from a mixed-methods study of undergraduates’ research experiences in a developmental writing course at a small, private university to suggest that writing bad research questions is a necessary part of the research process and that students can learn valuable lessons from the struggle to pose effective questions if given the necessary support. It offers a set of rubrics that can be used to evaluate the debatability, researchability, and feasibility of students’ research questions to help students turn failed research questions into successful ones.

Let's Tell A Story: Narrative, Constructivism, And Accessibility, Anders Tobiason Jan 2022

Let's Tell A Story: Narrative, Constructivism, And Accessibility, Anders Tobiason

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

I started making video tutorials as a graduate student in library and information science, took a few years off, and started again as a reference librarian at Portland State University. While I always had a sense that video tutorials could be better than they often are, I wasn't really sure exactly what that meant—that is, until I went to remake a few older videos to reflect some changes in the library catalog. How could I communicate those changes in a way that was engaging and helped move the viewer through the video? Then I remembered an old lesson from teaching …

“The Pioneer Of Japanese American Literature”: Caxton Printers And The Publishing Of Toshio Mori’S Yokohama, California, Alessandro Meregaglia

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Toshio Mori was born on March 3, 1910, in Oakland, California, to parents who were Japanese immigrants from Otake, Japan. They emigrated shortly before Mori was born, making him their first child born in the United States, and thus the family’s first American citizen. At the time of his birth, Mori’s parents ran a bathhouse in Oakland―“a flourishing business because most people seldom had bathroom facilities,” Mori recalled. When Mori was three, his parents opened a florist shop and nursery with relatives, where they raised carnations and roses and other flowers in their greenhouses. A few years later, the family …

Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) is one of the most successful National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended practices. Formally supported by over eighty organizations across all stakeholder groups, it enables a standardized transfer of data between content providers and knowledgebases. The KBART Standing Committee has begun work on Phase III of KBART, which was last updated in 2014. In this NASIG 2021 session, three members of the KBART Standing Committee provided an overview of plans around Phase III of KBART, reviewing progress to date and highlighting efforts to resolve issues around KBART files for which there are no easy …

When trying to manage their e-resources, librarians spend a significant amount of time adjusting their holdings in vendor knowledgebases to make sure that the content their library can access is selected properly. This is often a tedious process, which, extrapolated out to each content provider, can be a drain on library resources. A National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended practice provides a solution to this problem by facilitating the automatic transfer and retrieval of library-specific Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) holdings data between content providers and knowledgebases. In this presentation, Matthew Ragucci of Wiley presents a publisher’s perspective on …

Post Cancellation Access Collections to Improve ER Troubleshooting and Collection Development

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we actively maintain and reconcile Post Cancellation Access (PCA) Collections in the Alma Library Management System (LMS). These collections enable us to distinguish permanent holdings from leased holdings, which would go away if we stopped subscribing. In consequence, (1) our troubleshooting burden is reduced, (2) we can judge the value of our subscriptions more accurately, and (3) we can pursue collection development projects and reporting more quickly, with deeper understanding.

We will demonstrate our process to gather information from vendors and to set up …

From Host To Home: Reflections On Institutional Readiness, Denisse Solis, Carrie L. Forbes, Jack M. Maness

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

The creation of library residency programs, intended to diversify the library profession, has increased significantly over the last two years; for example, institutional membership in the ACRL Diversity Alliance grew from 36 to 53 from 20171 to 2019.2 As Dr. Alston notes in his research, “Diversity residency programs have become a popular way for academic libraries to demonstrate a commitment to diversity initiatives and to recruit and retain practitioners of color.”3 However, many host institutions and librarians rarely make significant efforts to deconstruct whiteness within themselves and at the organizational level.

This chapter is a reflective case study of the …

Implementing A Chatbot On A Library Website, Michelle Ehrenpreis, John P. Delooper Jan 2022

Implementing A Chatbot On A Library Website, Michelle Ehrenpreis, John P. Delooper

Publications and Research

A library’s website is a virtual point of contact for interacting with its patrons. Ensuring a library’s website has easily findable content is critical for providing access to library resources and highlighting services and events. One tool for assisting with content findability is a chatbot, a form of artificial intelligence software. In this case study, Lehman College's Leonard Lief Library implemented Ivy, a proprietary educational software chatbot on its website, the first of its kind for an academic library. This chatbot functioned as a new tool that assisted users seeking information and provided insight to librarians about the kinds of …

Scaling Up Video Digitization At The University Of Maryland Libraries: A Case Study, Elizabeth M. Caringola, Pamela A. Mcclanahan, Robin C. Pike

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In 2015, a team at the University of Maryland Libraries collaborated on a pilot project to digitize 100 VHS tapes from the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange collection and, in doing so, established organizational workflows for video digitization and access. After completing the pilot phase of the project, staff who worked on the project published a case study in this journal that articulated a question echoed throughout that process: “Is this enough?” Enough descriptive metadata? Enough technical metadata? Enough storage space? This article will reflect on the pilot project, detail how the digitization specifications and workflows established during the pilot project …

Working Knowledge: Catalogers And The Stories They Tell, Amanda Belantara, Emily Drabinski

Publications and Research

Cataloging librarians make myriad choices every day as they create the metadata necessary for information retrieval. Each record represents an interaction between the cataloger and the systems they work within and, sometimes, against. Their work is highly constrained by standardized machine-readable fields and codes, controlled subject terms, and classification schema. In the exploratory research project Catalogers at Work, the authors use sound recording to reveal the complex yet hidden negotiations embedded in library catalog records.
