Mississippi Libraries
In 1999, the Mississippi State University Libraries established the MegaResource School Librarian Workshop, a technology-focused workshop that provided K-12 librarians an opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Over the past 25 years, the workshop has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of school librarians, however, the popularity of the workshop and limited spacing meant there was often a waiting list, creating an opportunity for other institutions to help fill this need. In 2022, academic librarians and deans from Mississippi universities met to discuss ways that the University of Mississippi Libraries and others could create more outreach opportunities, specifically for …

“Literally Made Me Cry”: The Impact Of Course Material Costs On University Of Kentucky Students, Stephen Krueger
Library Reports and White Papers
The Student Course Materials Cost Survey was administered September 16 – October 6, 2024. It was open to current students at the University of Kentucky (UK). The goals were to help UK Libraries better understand how the cost of course materials affects students at UK and to provide a snapshot of student spending across the university. The questions were based on similar research done at other institutions in Virginia (Virginia Course Materials Survey, 2021) and Florida (2022 Student Textbook and Instructional Materials Survey, 2022). Other work based on those surveys includes the 2023 Illinois Course Materials Survey (CARLI, 2023) and …

Historians and educational scholars have extensively examined the subject of women's education, resulting in a rich body of literature that traces its evolution over the centuries. Moreover, this body of work encompasses significant movements advocating for women's rights to education and the establishment of colleges specifically for women. Scholars have also analyzed the challenges women encounter in accessing educational opportunities, including societal norms, economic barriers, and institutional discrimination. Notable works highlight the contributions of key figures, such as Mary Wollstonecraft, who advocated for women's education in both historical and contemporary contexts. Overall, this comprehensive scholarship not only documents the advancement …

Empowering Rural Smallholder Farmers: Access To Maize Postharvest Handling Information For Sustainable Food Security In Uganda, Jackline Estomihi Kiwelu, Patrick Ngulube
Libraries
This paper presents a model for improving access to scientifically researched information on maize postharvest handling among rural smallholder farmers in Uganda. The model was developed from a study that examined the influence of evidence-based information practices (EBIPs) on farmers’ ability to access and use such information effectively. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through interviews with 22 agricultural extension officers, four information officers, and 312 rural smallholder farmers, as well as focus group discussions and analysis of relevant government documents. The study found that access to verified information was intermittent. …

In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene moved from Florida up the east coast of the United States. The hurricane struck land in the Florida panhandle, and moved north up through North Carolina. It passed over much of Georgia. The hurricane made landfall at around 11pm in Perry, Florida on Thursday, September 26. That night, it moved up through Georgia, and through to North Carolina. Governor Brian Kemp issued a state of emergency for Georgia, and later a state of emergency for 41 counties in Georgia. This article shares the experiences of librarians in Georgia in responding to and living through …

This case study presents Swappin’ Stories, a community-based archiving event that serves as a model for public and participatory archiving. The event aimed to address gaps and misrepresentations of southern Appalachia by gathering the voices, artifacts, and stories of Towns County residents. By centering local narratives, it sought to foster a sense of community identity and offer an authentic portrayal of North Georgia, distinct from the narratives shaped by popular media and political figures. This case highlights the potential of community-driven archives to reclaim and reshape regional histories.

The Seamlessaccess Audit Toolkit: A Framework For Librarians To Audit Resource Access, John W. Felts, Heather Staines, Michelle Urberg
Library Faculty Publications
To help navigate complex issues caused by changes in technology, regulations, and user expectations, SeamlessAccess is producing a toolkit that gives librarians a framework for auditing their resource access. Structured into four key areas—Usability, Privacy, Reliability, and Security—the toolkit enables library staff the ability to identify the risks and opportunities that inform decision-making and advocate for future investment. In this paper, the authors explore the usability and privacy sections of the toolkit. In addition, the paper features feedback from a librarian about how the toolkit helped them identify and address access-related issues, assess potential ethical or legal exposure, and identify …

Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier
Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier
POC in LIS Summit
In this session, I’ll share how I’ve used the inclusive language strategies I learned in the ACUE Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning course to improve library instruction and create more equitable spaces for students. Language is powerful, and the way we speak can either open doors or unintentionally create barriers for students from diverse backgrounds. By using inclusive language, we can ensure all students feel respected, valued, and supported in the library.
I’ll walk through simple, practical examples of how inclusive language can be applied in library workshops, one-on-one research appointments, and everyday interactions with students. Whether it’s using gender-neutral …

Power Mapping: A Personal Tool For Navigating Hierarchy Power Structures, Noelle Leong
POC in LIS Summit
It can feel particularly overwhelming to keep track of and read dynamics between colleagues, especially when it comes to being strategic about who you can rely on for support or not. Ideally, we wouldn’t have to consider subtext, passive aggression, or empty politeness, but as we know, the people around us do not all have our best interests at heart. This knowledge can make or break any of the changes you are trying to make, big or small, to better serve your patrons or to improve your workplace. For those who can benefit from an organizational tool to best analyze …

From Guesswork To Great Collections: Using Ai To Build Engaged, Faculty-Informed Libraries, Tracy Gilmore, Tiffini Travis
POC in LIS Summit
Struggling to build collections that truly reflect your campus’ teaching and research needs? You’re not alone. With limited face time with faculty, hybrid schedules, and shrinking budgets, librarians often work in the dark—relying on guesswork, legacy requests, or one-size-fits-all tools.
This hands-on workshop introduces an innovative, AI-powered method developed at CSU Long Beach for creating faculty user profiles using publicly available data and tools like ChatGPT. Inspired by customer profiling strategies in the business world, this approach helps librarians move from reactive to proactive collection development.
Learn how to turn online faculty biographies, Curriculum Vitas, and publication data into actionable …

Partnerships For Preservation: Building Capacity In The Archival Community, Lizeth Ramirez, Azalea Camach
POC in LIS Summit
Community-centered collecting and community archives have become central to the work of archives in academic institutions, especially those located in areas with diverse communities. Los Angeles and the broader Southern California region are culturally rich, representing a multiplicity of peoples whose stories have been excluded from the traditional historical record. Efforts to remedy this exclusion are underway in the special collections departments at various academic institutions, including California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This important work is currently impacted both by limited institutional resources and the changing political landscape.
In order to …

Unequal Access: The Challenge Of Palestinian Representation In Libraries, Yael Noble, Raida Gatten, Rani J
POC in LIS Summit
This presentation brings together four librarians from public and academic institutions who have navigated significant challenges while developing collections, programs, and resources focused on Palestine during the past year. As information professionals, these panelists will share their experiences and the experiences of others with institutional resistance, external pressures, and threats that emerged specifically around Palestinian-focused work.
Presenters will explore the stark contrast between institutional approaches to Palestinian narratives compared to other diversity initiatives. Why are Palestinian perspectives subject to what scholars call the "Palestine Exception" in otherwise progressive spaces? How does this censorship and intimidation reflect a form of neo-McCarthyism …

Teaching In Authentic Ways: Exhibit Work And Student Curators In Special Collections, Rebecca Fitzsimmons
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Engaging students in exhibit work offers them a chance to learn new skills and grow as scholars while producing a tangible and public-facing project outcome from their coursework. From learning to communicate complex ideas to making research connections between rare and primary sources, exhibit curation relies on building research skills, sharpening writing and communication techniques, and developing critical thinking skills. Pushing and refining ideas is an essential part of the iterative process of research, and exhibit curation invites students to learn this practice in a real-world, project-based way. More specifically, it requires students to read, review, compare, and analyze more …

Marketing Culture Of Award-Winning Secondary School Librarians: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Cynthia Martin Schmidt
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences developing, understanding, and implementing marketing culture for award-winning secondary school librarians in the United States. The conceptual framework guiding this study was marketing culture, which explores the context of marketing attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors of organizations, purportedly leading to organizational success. This study used a phenomenological approach with secondary school librarians who had won an award for their work as a school librarian. Data collection consisted of individual semi-structured interviews, artifact analysis, and reflective journal prompts. Data analysis consisted of a hermeneutic epoché-reduction followed by a manual …
