Making A Case For Local Relevance: Strategic Exhibition Planning For The Gordon W. Prange Collection, Yukako Tatsumi

Journal of East Asian Libraries

In the changing academic libraries environment, area studies and special collections, marked by a high level of expertise in a specialized area, are faced with the challenge of articulating their value and becoming connected with a broad range of local users. This article shows that exhibitions can be a powerful instrument for making a convincing case for the relevance of these specialized collections to local users. It discusses a model case of strategic exhibition development for the Gordon W. Prange Collection, which archives Japanese-language print publications issued during the first four years of the U.S. Occupation of Japan, 1945-1949. Making …

A Framework For Digital Wisdom In Higher Education, Michael Paulus Jan 2019

A Framework For Digital Wisdom In Higher Education, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Libre Baskerville"; font-size: 16px;">Institutions of higher education have a crucial role and responsibility at this moment of technological change to form people who will flourish in our so-called digital age. The speed with which digital information and communication technologies have permeated our lives has left little time for critical reflection on how we may intentionally integrate them into our lives. Regardless of when we were born or the depth of our technological expertise, we are all of us digitally naïve. Individually and collectively, we are still learning how to use new and emerging digital …

Faculty Teaching And Librarian-Facilitated Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis Jan 2019

Faculty Teaching And Librarian-Facilitated Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This qualitative study explores the impact of a workshop on collaborative research assignment design that brought together an interdisciplinary group of faculty in a librarian-facilitated community of practice. Faculty participants attended the workshop, revised and implemented their assignments, and completed a follow-up interview. Themes that emerged reflected shifts in faculty teaching practices, including increased scaffolding, clarity, modeling, student collaboration, and opportunities for authentic learning. Gaining insight into how faculty approach the work of teaching directly impacts library instruction and how librarians can contribute to communities of practice among teachers in the academy.

Re-Conceptualizing Oral Culture Collections And Archival Practices, Amy L. Catania Jan 2019

Re-Conceptualizing Oral Culture Collections And Archival Practices, Amy L. Catania

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Western ethnographers, archaeologists, and researchers have collected information on indigenous cultures for centuries, but often without the input or permission of those cultures. This creates a situation in which indigenous peoples are essentially colonized anew. Recent trends in academia, including archival studies, have sought to decolonize research. This article explores past and present methods of the collection and preservation of oral histories from indigenous persons in both the United States and Australia in order to seek the best practice(s) for such endeavors. The author argues that indigenous groups need to be consulted when collecting stories and considering access to potentially …

Celebrating Student Scholarship With An Undergraduate Research Prize, Kevin Ross, Carolyn Radcliff, Talia Cain Jan 2019

Celebrating Student Scholarship With An Undergraduate Research Prize, Kevin Ross, Carolyn Radcliff, Talia Cain

Library Books and Book Chapters

"The Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University started its research prize contest for undergraduate students in 2007. Having reached the tenth anniversary of the contest, we are well positioned to reflect on how the contest has changed in concert with new ways of inquiry and information creation and on its role in supporting and honoring student research. A decade of experience has taught us how to diversify the contest and reflect collectively on its merits. In this chapter, we present a case study of how the Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize (URP) recognizes and honors student scholarship. We explain …

Connecting With Computer Science: Electronic Textile Portfolios As Ideational Identity Resources For High School Students, Mia S. Shaw, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai Jan 2019

Connecting With Computer Science: Electronic Textile Portfolios As Ideational Identity Resources For High School Students, Mia S. Shaw, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The development of student identities—their interests in computer science, perceptions of the discipline, and sense of belonging in the field—is critical for broadening participation of underrepresented groups in computing. This paper reports on the design of portfolios in which two classes of high school students reflected on the process of making electronic textile projects. We examine how students expressed self-authorship in relation to computer science and how the use of reflective portfolios shaped students’ perceptions of computer science. In the discussion we consider how reflective portfolios can serve as ideational resources for computer science identity construction.

A Cope Study (2019): Exploring Publication Ethics Issues In The Arts, Humanities, And Social Sciences, Committee On Publication Ethics

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) is a non-statutory body which aims to provide practical publication ethics guidance for journal editors working in all research disciplines. COPE was first conceived by an editor of a specialist medical journal at the BMJ Publishing Group but has since grown to become a fully multidisciplinary organisation. As a result of perceptions within COPE that some members not in Science Technology and Medicine (STM) disciplines might not consider COPE to be as relevant, in early 2019 COPE, with the support of Routledge (part of the Taylor & Francis Group), commissioned primary research to better understand …

Analyzing Small Businesses' Adoption Of Big Data Security Analytics, Henry Mathias

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite the increased cost of data breaches due to advanced, persistent threats from malicious sources, the adoption of big data security analytics among U.S. small businesses has been slow. Anchored in a diffusion of innovation theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine ways to increase the adoption of big data security analytics among small businesses in the United States by examining the relationship between small business leaders' perceptions of big data security analytics and their adoption. The research questions were developed to determine how to increase the adoption of big data security analytics, which can be measured …
