Finding “Diversity Levers” In The Core Library And Information Science Curriculum: A Social Justice Imperative, Kafi D. Kumasi, Nichole Manlove

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In this exploratory study, the researchers examined the core library and information science (LIS) curriculum, looking for diversity levers, or conceptual access points, where transformative academic knowledge related to diversity and social justice could be meaningfully integrated. Multicultural curriculum reform, conceptualized as a social justice approach, was the guiding framework for the research design and analysis. The researchers began by establishing what constitutes the core curriculum and essential knowledge taught across thirty-six ALA-accredited master’s of library and information science degree programs. These data were then used to construct a survey that went to one hundred LIS faculty at ALA institutions …

While libraries face challenges in building usage of a new medium like streaming video, strategic, active marketing by libraries, with support from vendors, can overcome these challenges. Time‐tested marketing strategies, as well as leveraging new promotional tools can help the library attain the usage that justifies the investment in new media. Recovering Wet Materials: Disaster Plans And Recovery Workflows, Joshua M. Lupkin, Sally Krash, Eric Wedig

Charleston Library Conference

Careful documentation of collections and disaster planning can allow a library to recover physical collections after events with the best possible outcomes for condition, materials costs, outreach, and librarian/staff workflows. This paper describes how the Howard‐Tilton Library at Tulane University (HTML) experienced a roof leak in February 2014 with attending need to manage the outsourced work of disaster recovery contractors for the remediation of more than 2,000 wet books, the reshelving of more than 20,000 displaced books, and the replacement of about 300 books within a two month period during the academic year. This paper describes successful methods of response, …

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope

Charleston Library Conference

When the faculty of the College of Staten Island, CUNY (CSI) introduced a new baccalaureate level program in East Asian Studies the library faced the challenge of evaluating the adequacy of its holdings to support the program and its future development. Multidisciplinary fields of study (e.g., East Asian Studies) that pertain to a specific geographical or cultural area present a unique set of evaluative issues because their subject content cannot be confined to set classification ranges, rendering the traditional methods of collection analysis inadequate. This poster will present the results of an evaluation of CSI’s East Asian Studies collection, discuss …

Graduate Conversations: Assessing The Space Needs Of Graduate Students, Melissa M. Burel, Abby Scheel, Rachel Besara, Jessica Evans Bradey, Kirsten Kinsley, Gloria Colvin

Library and Information Services Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article discusses the preferences, habits, and needs of graduate students as they relate to spaces for research and study. The findings are based on a large-scale ethnographic study of graduate students at Florida State University conducted between 2010 and 2013. Using a variety of ethnographic methods, researchers found that graduate students have diverse needs and unequal access to appropriate spaces and resources to meet those needs. Libraries can help fill the gaps left by home and academic departments by providing a range of spaces offering different noise levels, resources, and other amenities.
