Clinical Education-A Golden Dancer?, W. Wade Beryyhill

Before any revealing analysis of clinical education can take place, it is necessary, as well as helpful, to look briefly at the history and criticisms of legal education which spawned the emphasis in clinical programs. These efforts will be followed by an analysis of the recent clinical movement. The most predominant American law school programs generally termed "clinical" experience will be identified, described and critiqued. Section four of this article discusses the results of the author's survey QUESTIONNAIRE: Classroom Teaching Techniques and Programsof ClinicalEducation.Deans, or clinical faculty members if the law school had an ongoing clinical program, plus certain law …

Reassessing Law Schooling: The Sterling Forest Group, Thomas L. Shaffer

This Article is the result of a weekend in December 1976 at the Sterling Forest Conference Center. Several legal educators came together there to explore the possible relevance of humanistic educational psychology to legal education, and the pieces that follow flow from the experiences in learning we shared there. The concerns that brought the ten of us together were not new; rather, they emanated from a longstanding challenge within the profession.
Although we taught at different institutions and in different fields, our experiences had led us to a common dissatisfaction with legal education and a hope that more was possible. …

Legal education in the United States is passing through its winter of discontent. Those who are new to the law schools-students and young instructors-are likely to be unaware of how recently and precipitously the present mood developed. Even those who have known the law schools longer may by now have forgotten the confidence and euphoria that were characteristic attributes of the schools until no more than a decade ago.
