How To Cultivate Compassion As A Tool For Everyday Leadership, Paula Webster

Mindfulness Studies Theses

In this two-party thesis study, the need for compassion in our world is presented up front. Upon this foundation of the need for compassion, the building blocks that together comprise compassionate everyday leader are placed: leaders and leadership, mindful leadership, defining the everyday leader, mindfulness, compassion, and how to cultivate compassion. The Experience Of Influence Among Youth Leaders, Kelly Moguel

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Scholarship

While the term “leadership” can be difficult to define, one term that is commonly seen in its association is “influence”. While the field of leadership has empirically identified several outcomes associated with adult influence (i.e., greater organizational performance, higher subordinate satisfaction, higher subordinate engagement), little is known about influence in youth leaders. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain a better understanding of how youth leaders experience influence. Twenty-nine in-depth, semi-structured interviews from fifth- 12th-grade students in a leadership mentoring program called Nebraska Human Resources Institute (NHRI) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were conducted to ascertain …

Community And Leadership, Shirley Freed Sep 2015

Community And Leadership, Shirley Freed

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"i’m quite certain there is a lot of variety within countries and also that this factor (individualism/collectivism) is on a continuum, with individualism sometimes being stronger and other times community or collectivism being stronger. But what does all this mean for christian leaders? i’m not certain! What i do know is that the notion of “community” can be found easily in Scripture: consider Jesus’ ministry and teaching, descriptions of the early church, and even the reality of god as a unity of three in one."

Language As Leadership, Shirley Freed Sep 2015

Language As Leadership, Shirley Freed

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"Human beings have a fundamental connection to “home.” Christian leaders all have the underlying goal of leading the way home. We speak of heaven as home; we use phrases like, “home is where the heart is,” and “home Sweet home.” When circumstances are difficult, when we are worn and discouraged, we lean on life’s tired dreams and murmur, “i just want to go home.” home means many things to each of us, but i think that language is one of the vehicles that takes us home. For example, i always jump when i hear a Canadian accent, and i say …

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd Sep 2015

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"I learned that the photographers who captured unforgettable images all had some things in common: they seemed to know themselves and people; they had vision, passion, and timing; they had an innate ability to communicate effectively; they took risks; and they learned from their mistakes. I also came to realize that as a result of their unique presence—and often their sacrifice—they made a significant and lasting contribution to our world."

LEADERSHIP PAIN: THE CLASSROOM FOR GROWTH By Samuel Chand Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson (2015) Hardcover, 244 pages

"Samuel chand’s Leadership Pain is a book on leadership and its struggles and victories. But most important this is a book about experiencing and working through our pain, hurt, disappointments and betrayal as christian leaders. As chand states in every chapter, “You’ll grow only to the threshold of your pain.” this is both thought provoking and challenging, but also it encourages us to raise our threshold of pain."

Factors And Qualities Of Lay Leadership Influencing Church Growth : A Multiple Case Study

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

Opinion: Education For Professional Leadership And The Humanities: Exhortations And Demonstrations, Peter Iver Kaufman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The complaint: pre-professional, para-professional, and professional programs occupy large slabs of the undergraduate curricula in colleges and universities in the United States. Core courses in which the arts and humanities were introduced to first- and second-year students are extinct in places, replaced by distribution requirements or specialized seminars that occasionally--but not often--expose students to a broad range of studies from classics to cultural anthropology, history, philosophy, music, literature, political theory, and other precincts in the liberal arts. Undergraduates wishing to enter the professional programs in journalism, business (finance, accounting, and marketing), education, energy, environmental sciences, health care, and health sciences …

Leadership For Sustainability And Peace: Responding To The Wicked Challenges Of The Future, Rian Satterwhite, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Kate Sheridan

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In the past century our understanding of leadership has changed as the contexts in which leadership occurs evolve. Today, constructs of leadership that do not incorporate emergent concepts such as systems thinking no longer match the realities of the world in which it is exercised and the challenges it seeks to address. The challenges we face as a global community have increased in complexity, size, scope, and consequence. As a result of this contextual evolution, our definition of effective leadership is evolving as well."

Leadership And The Australian Greens, Christine Cunningham, Stewart Jackson Jul 2015

Leadership And The Australian Greens, Christine Cunningham, Stewart Jackson

Dr. Christine Cunningham

This paper examines the inherent tension between a Green political party’s genesis and official ideology and the conventional forms and practices of party leadership enacted in the vast bulk of other parties, regardless of their place on the ideological spectrum. A rich picture is painted of this ongoing struggle through a case study of the Australian Greens with vivid descriptions presented on organisational leadership issues by Australian state and federal Green members of parliaments. What emerges from the data is the Australian Green MPs’ conundrum in retaining an egalitarian and participatory democracy ethos while seeking to expand their existing frame …

Cultural Context's Influence On The Relationships Between Leadership Personality And Subordinate Perceptions, Victoria J. Smoak Jul 2015

Cultural Context's Influence On The Relationships Between Leadership Personality And Subordinate Perceptions, Victoria J. Smoak

Doctoral Dissertations

Fascination with leadership and the pursuit of its understanding have been common across disciplines throughout history (Bass & Stogdill, 1990). Studying leadership in an organization provides value in understanding its relation to outcomes such as employee attitudes (Podsakoff, MacKenzie, & Bommer, 1996), individual performance (Tierney, Farmer, & Graen, 1999) and organizational performance (Day & Lord, 1988; Sully de Luque, Washburn, Waldman, & House, 2008). Leadership is suggested to be the underlying human factor key to organizational effectiveness (Hogan & Kaiser, 2005). In spite of the vast body of literature, much remains to be understood, especially understanding context (McCall & Hollenbeck, …

Challenge Of Leadership: The 3c Approach As Way Forward, Oluwaseun Viyon Ojo

Oluwaseun Viyon Ojo

Leadership is a perennial problem in the Nigerian society and it is in dire need in every facet of the society. It is therefore expedient that urgent steps be taken to see to it that the vacuum of leadership is filled with a clear sight on the way forward. Thus, it is suggested in this piece that a 3c approach is the possible way forward most especially from the perspectives of youths, who are more often claimed as the leaders of tomorrow. It is hoped that the leadership gap will be narrowed if the suggestions are taken into consideration and applied …

Where Did All The Young People Go? Can The Organizations Of The State Of Maine Re-Enlist Its Native Youth?, Tyler Norman Mcpherson Ma

All Student Scholarship

As Maine and other New England states continue to be amongst the oldest in the United States, organizations in these states continue to struggle to find and retain suitable younger replacements for their retiring leadership. As the millennia! generation continues to become a significant portion of the American workforce, learning how to connect with, recruit, and retain this generation will prove useful when leadership succession is required. By exploring how this generation was nurtured and educated, we can begin to understand ways, such as non-traditional or reverse mentoring relationships, that New England's organizations can begin to recruit and retain their …

Toward An Outward-Looking Indigeneity, Michelle Evans May 2015

Toward An Outward-Looking Indigeneity, Michelle Evans

Michelle Evans

Looking outward is a much-documented preoccupation of Australians that is very much alive in the arts. There is a hopeful glimmer in ‘outward-lookingness’ 1 that draws the eye, books a ticket and escorts us willingly away from Australia into the world. I’ve noticed friends and colleagues spirited away to places like the Galapagos Islands, Cambodia, Bhutan, Siberia ... However, this outward-lookingness is not just a personal gaze upon exotic lands afar, or a wish to escape the familiar embrace of Australia but an intentional strategy Indigenous artists are applying to the malaise of the stiflingly low glass ceiling of Indigenous …
