A Treatise On The Law Of Sale Of Personal Property, Volume I, Floyd R. Mechem Jan 1901

A Treatise On The Law Of Sale Of Personal Property, Volume I, Floyd R. Mechem

Books

When this task was undertaken the writer believed that there was a real need for an American book upon the law of Sale. In the long time that he bas been at work, various contributions to the subject have been made by others, so that it is possible that the need, if it ever existed, has long since been supplied. The writer, however, whether wisely or unwisely, has persisted in his undertaking, and if bis work shall prove to have a value in some degree commensurate with the labor spent upon it, he will be content.

Outlines Of The Law Of Agency, Floyd R. Mechem Jan 1901

Outlines Of The Law Of Agency, Floyd R. Mechem

Books

The subject of Agency belongs to a comparatively recent period in our law … Agency belongs distinctively to a commercial age, and its growth has kept pace with the progress of commercial activity. It furnishes the means by which the range of individual and corporate activity is enormously increased. One person may thus have many an alter ego. A single brain may direct a hundred hands. The modern business man may be constructively present in many places and carry on diverse and widely separated industries at the same time.

The following pages have been printed to accompany the writer’s …

A Study Of The United States Steel Corporation In Its Industrial And Legal Aspects; Being Three Lectures Delivered To The Class In Private Corporations, In The University Of Michigan, June 3, 4 And 5, 1901, Horace L. Wilgus

Books

When the. class in corporations asked me to lecture upon the United States Steel Corporation, I replied I had not at band such of the documents use.d in its organization as would justify a legal discussion, and I did not wish to rely upon newspaper reports as to their contents. I promised, however, to try to secure authentic information. In order to do this, I wrote Messrs. J. P. Horgan & Co., requesting copies of such papers as were not considered private, stating what use was to be made of them. In reply to this request, they very kindly sent …

Joseph Hardcastle Vance, Jerome C. Knowlton Jan 1901

Joseph Hardcastle Vance, Jerome C. Knowlton

Articles

On December 20, 1900, after a quarter of a century's services in the University of Michigan, Joseph H. Vance died at his rooms on Monroe street in the city of Ann Arbor. He had been confined to the house for only a few days and the announcement of his death shocked many of his friends, who had not learned of his illness. He was seventy-three years of age and to those most intimately associated with him his death was not a surprise. During the past two years marked indications of senility had appeared with painful frequency.

Recollection Of The Law Department, Jerome C. Knowlton

Articles

In 1859 the Department of Law began its work in education at the the university of Michigan, with three professors and ninety students. The faculty consisted of Thomas M. Cooley, James V. Campbell and Charles I. Walker. Judge Cooley resided in Ann Arbor and the other gentlemen lived in Detroit. At this time these men were young and inexperienced in educational work and had not achieved in any marked degree, success at the bar. Today the lives of Cooley, Campbell and Walker make up some of the best chapters in the history of the State of Michigan, and the better …

Suggestions As To The Study Of Law, Floyd R. Mechem Jan 1901

Suggestions As To The Study Of Law, Floyd R. Mechem

Articles

I have been asked to make a few suggestions respecting the study of law. I realize, of course, that I am in no position to speak with authority upon the subject. I realize also that it is a subject upon which competent judges might give different opinions. It seems to me, however, that two or three points may be suggested with reference to which all might agree.

Requirements Of A Legal Education, Bradley M. Thompson Jan 1901

Requirements Of A Legal Education, Bradley M. Thompson

Other Publications

The sentiment which has been assigned to me and to which, in a Pickwickian sense, I am to respond, covers the whole field of a lawyer's professional education. It is a subject of special interest to the bar, and of much importance, indeed, to all, for the bar furnishes from its ranks all the members of the judicial department, one of the three co-ordinate departments of the government, whether state or national. And since every member of the bar is a member of the court before whom he practices, we constitute, at least, one third of the government. And if …
