Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

This paper examines the intersection of civic education, art, and the media as powerful tools for activism, social change, resistance, and transformation, particularly in the context of Nigerian youths. Over the past few years, young Nigerians have emerged as a formidable force in advocating for social justice and good governance in what they have describes as fighting for their lives. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, this study explores how the integration of civic education, media, art, and activism empowers Nigerian youths to address social injustices and inequalities, challenge the generations that have come before, and drive meaningful transformations.

n 1990, the Visual Artists’ Rights Act (VARA) became a welcome addition to the federal Copyright Act of 1976. VARA was the first time the “moral rights” of an artist were federally protected in the United States. Moral rights are commonly understood to provide attribution to artists and protect the integrity of visual art pieces. Under VARA, this means authors have a right to claim authorship on pieces they create, prevent the use of their name on a work they did not create, and prohibit the destruction of works of “recognized statute” (both intentional and through gross negligence). Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Under Title IX and the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, universities were reminded of their obligation to educate, prevent, and respond to sexual assaults and other forms of gender-based violence. The current study used a survey packet including a Rape Myth Acceptance scale, questions about related education, and a scale rating participants’ level of confidence on seven vignettes. The sample indicated participants were more likely to recognize whether consent was given than they were to recognize whether the vignette met legal standards for sexual assault. The results can provide universities with information to better individualize their sexual assault prevention efforts.

One aspect of the student debt crisis that has the potential to loom over many individuals is the taxation of student debt forgiveness. Up until March 11, 2021, when all or part of one’s student debt was discharged, the amount was taxed as ordinary income for the year in which it was forgiven. Judicial review has often been cast in terms of democratic legitimacy. Democratic legitimacy is often linked to whether it institutes the will of the people through majoritarian rule and whether it creates processes for reevaluation of these prior decisions by newly constituted majorities. Judicial review of majoritarian decisions has often been criticized as a overriding or circumventing of these democratic processes. Beginning with Brown v. ‘Meira Paibi’ is an all-women grassroots resistance movement in Manipur (India). It emerged in 1980s against state atrocities committed under the ambit of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA). Their ‘contentious politics’, protest rallies and demonstrations, have gained significant mainstream attention. Often than not, Meira Paibi’s image is interpreted as symbol of women’s empowerment. Since the 1910s, Hollywood has measured audience preferences with rough industry-created methods. In the 1940s, scientific audience research led by George Gallup started to conduct film audience surveys with traditional statistical and psychological methods. However, the quantity, quality, and speed were limited. Things dramatically changed in the internet age. The prevalence of digital data increases the instantaneousness, convenience, width, and depth of collecting audience and content data. Advanced data and AI technologies have also allowed machines to provide filmmakers with ideas or even make human-like expressions. This brings new copyright challenges in the data-driven era.

This thesis investigates the challenges faced by Black trans people. In this thesis, I will explore how protest is used to highlight and confront the obstacles faced by the Black trans community. I will also examine the cultural work of Black trans people and what they teach us. The Brooklyn Liberation march and the TV show Pose is an important part of Black trans legacy. Regardless which way market forces push property prices, the principal sum owed to a mortgagee is unaffected while interest is payable by the mortgagor to account for the mortgagee’s cost of capital and underwriting risks. If a mortgagor is unable to service its mortgage, then as protection and enforcement of the secured land, the remedies available to a mortgagee include sale, foreclosure, possession and appointment of a receiver. Because foreclosure exchanges debt for title, the remedy is at odds with the idea that a lender does not set out to take investment risk. Unsurprisingly, foreclosure as a remedy is hardly …

Even many steadfast supporters of abortion rights believed that the Court erroneously applied the First Amendment in Hill v. Colorado, 530 U.S. 703 (2000). As put bluntly by leading liberal scholar Professor Laurence Tribe, Hill was among the candidates for “most blatantly erroneous” decisions of the 1999 Term. Constitution-writing, according to the United Nations, should be participatory, non-exclusionary, and transparent. Recent scholarship has identified group inclusion, or ensuring that a broad swath of enfranchised groups is welcomed into the drafting room, as the lodestar of constitutional process. In making this comparative case--one which has important implications for modern constitution-writing--scholarship provides precious little empirical evidence, particularly from the historical genre. This ignores the benefit of studying the oldest constitution-writing traditions in America and all that can be learned by tracing a practice or idea to its roots.
