HIGHER EDUCATION AND RESILIENCE: AN EXPLORATION OF SEXUAL
MISCONDUCT SURVIVORS’ LIVED EXPERIENCES AND
THE IMPACT ON THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY
Patricia Williams, PhD
University of the Incarnate Word, 2026
This study explored the lived experiences and resilience of victims/survivors of sexual misconduct while pursuing education at an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL). Students between the ages of 18 and 24 are more likely to be sexually victimized than be victims of robbery at IHLs (RAINN, n.d.). The impact of sexual misconduct can leave victims/survivors with long-term trauma, causing negative academic outcomes and a host of behavioral and emotional issues (Banyard et …
Juvenile Lifers: Adapting To Life While Doing Life, Tristin Faust
Juvenile Lifers: Adapting To Life While Doing Life, Tristin Faust
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This qualitative study examined psychosocial maturation among individuals sentenced to life imprisonment for offenses committed during adolescence. Archival interview and survey data were analyzed for 30 men who had been resentenced and released after serving an average of 31 years in prison. Findings revealed a developmental progression across four stages: pre-incarceration, initial incarceration, catalysts for change, and later incarceration. Participants described entering prison with developmental immaturity compounded by trauma, unstable home environments, educational disruption, and antisocial peer influence. Their early years of incarceration were marked by anger, fear, misconduct, and survival-oriented behavior. Over time, participants identified discrete events and ongoing …
Race, Sex, And Age Disparities In Homicide Clearance Rates In Tennessee: An Intersectional Approach, Teliyah Cobb
Race, Sex, And Age Disparities In Homicide Clearance Rates In Tennessee: An Intersectional Approach, Teliyah Cobb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Demographic factors can influence homicide solvability. This study examines the relationship between victim characteristics and homicide clearance rates in Tennessee from 2001 to 2023. Using an intersectional approach, it assesses whether victim characteristics both individually and in combination are related to case solvability. Variables of interest include: (1) victim race, age range, and sex; (2) year the case was reported; (3) crime type; (4) whether the case was cleared; and (5) the circumstances leading to clearance. A total of 11,534 homicide cases from the Tennessee Incident-Based Reporting System were analyzed.
Findings indicate that individual victim characteristics do not significantly predict …
Piracy, Terrorism, And The Law: Differential Equations In Hostage Situations, Gabriel Hallevy
Piracy, Terrorism, And The Law: Differential Equations In Hostage Situations, Gabriel Hallevy
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Pirates have taken the crew of an American ship hostage. They promise to release the hostages only if another pirate who is held in an American prison for commission of piracy crimes against American citizens, is released. Should the U.S. government enter into negotiations with them? Should they send armed forces and risk the hostages? Should they release the prisoner immediately and unconditionally? The article models and analyzes possible policies regarding sensitive situations involving hostages and other related risks using differential equations. The solutions are surprisingly simple, but not necessarily intuitive. Our analysis aims to demonstrate how powerful mathematics is …
Mediation As A Mechanism For Resolving Family Disputes In Lebanon: An Analytical Study Of Current Practice And Development Prospects, Amer El Masry
Mediation As A Mechanism For Resolving Family Disputes In Lebanon: An Analytical Study Of Current Practice And Development Prospects, Amer El Masry
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
This study examines the effectiveness of mediation as a mechanism for resolving family disputes in Lebanon, with a particular focus on the gap between the legal framework governing mediation and its practical application. The research addresses the extent to which mediation, in its judicial and consensual forms, can provide effective and fair solutions to family disputes within a legal system characterized by multiple personal status laws, diverse judicial authorities, and the absence of a specialized framework for family mediation. It further explores challenges related to the protection of vulnerable parties, the balance of power between disputants, institutional integration, and public …
The State’S Responsibility To Prevent And Investigate Violations Of The Right To Life In The Beirut Port Explosion, Ali Wehbi Dib
The State’S Responsibility To Prevent And Investigate Violations Of The Right To Life In The Beirut Port Explosion, Ali Wehbi Dib
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
The right to life is recognised in International Human Rights Law (IHRL) as the "supreme right." It is considered a jus cogens norm, fundamental for both individuals and society as a whole. IHRL provides a general guarantee of the right to life. To effectively protect it, the state must take all feasible measures to prevent violations of the right to life and to respond to them. This includes investigating incidents and, when appropriate, prosecuting and punishing those responsible.
The Beirut Port explosion on 4 August 2020 was one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions in history. It resulted in the …
Ethics Under Siege: The Conflict In Tigray Through The Lens Of Just War Theory, Daniela Widya Purba
Ethics Under Siege: The Conflict In Tigray Through The Lens Of Just War Theory, Daniela Widya Purba
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
This research article explains the ethical principles of the conflict in Tigray based on the Just War Theory. By using the descriptive qualitative methodology, this research article draws data from secondary sources which includes; academic journals, news reports, as well as international legal instruments to analyze the moral trajectory of the conflict. This research begins with jus ad bellum, to assess Ethiopia’s government justification in declaring conflict within Tigray. While the government fulfilled the criteria of just cause and legitimate authority, the question stands on the ambiguous political intentions and the failure to enact peaceful alternatives before resulting in waging …
Paediatricians' Liability To Patients' Parents For Negligent Genetic Testing, Anthony Sangiuliano
Paediatricians' Liability To Patients' Parents For Negligent Genetic Testing, Anthony Sangiuliano
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has recently held that a paediatrician might owe a duty of care to a patient’s parents when performing genetic testing on the patient and communicating test results to the parents. The parents may be able to claim damages against the paediatrician for breach of this duty if, in reliance on a miscommunication about the test results, they conceive a subsequent child who is later born with a disability. I call the tort alleged by the parents in these circumstances a subspecies of “paediatric triangular torts.” In this article, I demonstrate the conceptual feasibility of …

Voters’ Perception Of Nigeria’S Electoral Process: An X-Ray Of The 2023 Presidential Election, Omamurhieme Julia Akpodovhan, Chukwuma Anyanwu Dr
International Review of Humanities Studies
In its six decades of post-independence, Nigeria has experienced the best and worst in military and democratic governance fluctuating from one to the other. It has purportedly settled into a democracy but with highly flawed electoral processes. This paper interrogates the February 25, 2023 Presidential election with a view to assessing the perception of voters in the exercise to determine whether there has been an improvement or otherwise in the status quo of how previous elections were conducted. Drawing from historical antecedents, participant observation and opinion poll research techniques, the authors relied on information from five of ten polling booths …
The Indonesian Conjunction Dan ‘And’ And Its Chinese Correspondences: A Corpus-Based Approach To Syntactic And Register Variation, Hatmi Idris
International Review of Humanities Studies
This study examines how the Indonesian conjunction dan ‘and’ is rendered in Chinese across syntactic units using a corpus-based contrastive approach. Focusing on children’s books, classic novels, and online news, it analyzes coordination at word, phrase, and clause level from a syntactic and register perspective. Findings show that dan ‘and’ does not correspond to a single Chinese form. At the word and phrase level, nominal coordination employs hé (和) ‘and’, yǔ (与) ‘and’, and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’ , with formal news discourse favoring yǔ (与) ‘and’ and yǐjí (以及) ‘as well as’. In verbal coordination, bìng (并) ‘furthermore’ …
Persuasive Strategies In Umrah Marketing On Social Media: A Comparative Study Of Arabic And Indonesian, Stevania C. Asahri
Persuasive Strategies In Umrah Marketing On Social Media: A Comparative Study Of Arabic And Indonesian, Stevania C. Asahri
International Review of Humanities Studies
This study examines persuasive strategies in Arabic- and Indonesian-language Umrah marketing flyers circulated on social media. As public interest in Umrah continues to grow, travel agencies increasingly rely on digital platforms not only to promote travel packages but also to construct spiritual appeal, religious credibility, and consumer trust. This study therefore aims to analyze how spiritual imagery is constructed, how rhetorical and pragmatic persuasive strategies are used, and how persuasive patterns differ between Arabic- and Indonesian-language Umrah marketing flyers. The study adopts a qualitative-dominant convergent parallel mixed-methods design. The qualitative analysis is based on Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), integrated …

Radical Responsibility: Sartre And The Ecocentric Erosion Of Human Agency, Khodadad Azizi, Naupal Asnawi, Abby Gina Boang Manalu
International Review of Humanities Studies
Contemporary ecological crisis persists despite decades of environmental ethics discourse and rising public awareness, a discrepancy researchers have named the awareness-action gap. One influential corrective, running from Aldo Leopold’s land ethic through Arne Naess’s deep ecology, addresses anthropocentric domination by folding the human being back into the biotic community as one member among others. This article argues that such levelling, whatever its merits against domination, carries an underexamined cost: it erodes the very ground on which anyone can be held responsible for ecological destruction, since only a being capable of choice, not soil, water, or rock, can be asked to …

Stop Blaming My Users: Illumination Of The Technocentric Mythos Bias, Ervin H. Frenzel, Richard Lightcap
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Abstract -This conceptual essay addresses the need for systemic and systematic transdisciplinary analytical techniques within cybersecurity and technical security. This conceptual essay is contingent upon recognition that cybersecurity is not simply technical in nature, it does not need an adversary, and more importantly it is based upon systems engineering and systems thinking. The essay contributes a socio-technical attribution chain and field-specific ontology/taxonomy which distinguish user-triggered events from root causes, latent conditions, technical debt, validation failures, governance failures, and attribution bias before assigning responsibility to end users. It systematically defines an ontology inclusive of developer technical debt, organizational debt arising from …
Criminal Investigation Of Crimes Committed In A Metaverse Environment: A Comparative Analytical Study, Hussein Abdelmoaty Abdelnaby
Criminal Investigation Of Crimes Committed In A Metaverse Environment: A Comparative Analytical Study, Hussein Abdelmoaty Abdelnaby
Journal of Police and Legal Sciences
The world is undergoing a radical transformation in the nature of social spaces and human interactions, driven by the emergence of advanced virtual environments such as the "metaverse," which represents a multi-dimensional digital extension of the real world. This transformation has led to the emergence of new forms of criminal activity occurring within this immaterial space, raising fundamental questions about the adequacy of traditional legal and procedural frameworks—particularly criminal investigation mechanisms—in keeping pace with these developments.
This study aims to analyze the key legal and procedural challenges associated with crimes committed in the metaverse and assess the adequacy of the …
The Role Of Social Emotional Learning In Utah’S Implementation Of Essa, Sharon Walles
The Role Of Social Emotional Learning In Utah’S Implementation Of Essa, Sharon Walles
Transforming Communities
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), as a policy, offers an additional tool to address the escalating adolescent mental health crisis. By acknowledging the critical link between student well-being, academic success, and evidence-based practices, this policy analysis explores how funding from ESSA can be leveraged to integrate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) within Utah’s schools. Experts, educators, and parents can be voices to combat misinformation surrounding the recent politicization of SEL and its implementation. This analysis connects Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory, which highlights the interconnectedness of the environment, with the importance of prioritizing mental health within schools to help adolescents with issues …
Bloomington Community Brain Health Services Program: The Intersection Of Law Enforcement And Brain Health, Janet Yeats, Luke Campbell, Booker Hodges
Bloomington Community Brain Health Services Program: The Intersection Of Law Enforcement And Brain Health, Janet Yeats, Luke Campbell, Booker Hodges
Forensic Scholars Today
In 2023, the Bloomington Police Department launched the Bloomington Community Brain Health Services (BCBHS) program in response to increasing mental health crises, provider shortages, long wait times for services, and rising law enforcement involvement in crisis calls. The Bloomington Model integrates licensed therapists and supervised graduate-level interns directly within a police department structure. The program aims to reduce mental health-related calls, stabilize residents experiencing crisis, and eliminate cost barriers by offering up to 15 sessions of free, short-term therapy delivered in homes, schools, virtual settings, and community spaces.
This article outlines the program’s development, implementation, and early outcomes, highlighting key …
The Role Of Online Disinhibition On Social Media Users' Privacy Concerns And Behaviors, Lisa Thompson, Sinyong Choi
The Role Of Online Disinhibition On Social Media Users' Privacy Concerns And Behaviors, Lisa Thompson, Sinyong Choi
Faculty Articles
As social media platforms become central to digital interactions, concerns about both privacy and the disclosure of personal information have evolved. Online disinhibition—the psychological detachment users experience in digital spaces that distance their online behaviors from offline consequences—may shape perceptions of privacy risks, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok. This study examines the relationships between online disinhibition and users’ privacy concerns and protective behaviors while accounting for individuals’ sense of gratification, media awareness, identity, and experience. By exploring dimensions such as anonymity and invisibility, we investigate how these factors are linked to self-disclosure and diminished privacy caution. Findings from …
"Distributed Voice" During Deliberations: What Real Juries Tell Us, Mary R. Rose, Shari S. Diamond
"Distributed Voice" During Deliberations: What Real Juries Tell Us, Mary R. Rose, Shari S. Diamond
DePaul Law Review
Juries are supposed to represent the views of their community,
but securing representative bodies will not meet fair cross-section
aims if deliberations fail to actually produce contributions from a
wide variety of voices. This Essay develops the concept of
“distributed voice,” or the ability of a jury to spread out talk across
more jurors. Analyses examine what factors predict a jury’s
likelihood of producing more egalitarian distributions of speaking
turns and of words spoken. Data from actual deliberations of fifty
civil juries demonstrate that talk patterns on juries are more widely
distributed when there is a greater diversity of views …
Legal Analysis After The Behavioral Revolution, Russell Korobkin, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski
Legal Analysis After The Behavioral Revolution, Russell Korobkin, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski
DePaul Law Review
The incorporation of behavioral economics and cognitive
psychology has profoundly challenged traditional legal
scholarship’s understanding of human decision making. This Article
explores how insights from the behavioral sciences have
fundamentally recast the academy's approach to legal doctrine in
the private law subjects that have long been the foundation of legal
training. By demonstrating systematic cognitive biases and
heuristics that deviate from rational choice theory, behavioral
research has upended the rational choice assumption that anchored
consequentialist analysis of law and left in its wake a more
contingent and context-dependent, and thus a fragmented,
normative landscape.
Procedural Justice And Body Worn Cameras, Yael Granot
Procedural Justice And Body Worn Cameras, Yael Granot
DePaul Law Review
The extensive and rapid roll out of body cameras across
American police forces in the past decades was intended to improve
issues of accountability and transparency in policing. Trust and
perceptions of fairness of police are shaped, in large part, by how
one is treated by officers and departments—the fundamental
interpersonal work of procedural justice. This Article reviews
findings on public and police support for body cameras, as well as
research connecting body cameras to perceptions of procedural
justice. It then elaborates on past research with a vignette
experiment, aimed at isolating the unique and interactive effects of
just policies, …
What We Should Know About The Reliability Of Empirical Legal Studies, Kathryn Zeiler
What We Should Know About The Reliability Of Empirical Legal Studies, Kathryn Zeiler
DePaul Law Review
The findings of replication studies conducted in the early 2010s
led many to declare that science was in the midst of a “replication
crisis.” Since then, a growing number of reforms have been
proposed and tested. The field of empirical legal studies seems
behind other fields such as psychology, economics, political science,
medicine, biology, and others that have taken significant steps
toward uncovering the general reliability of the field’s empirical
work, investigating the causes of observed unreliability, and
instituting and testing the effects of various reforms. The purpose of
this Article is to summarize what we know about the reliability …
Reconstructing Reasonableness With Social Science, Kevin Tobia
Reconstructing Reasonableness With Social Science, Kevin Tobia
DePaul Law Review
The social science of legal decision making often emphasizes
judgment bias. That empirical project reflects the legacy of legal
realism and grows in the shadow of law and economics, both of
which embody skepticism about legal concepts. These theoretical
influences encourage empiricists to “deconstruct” legal concepts by
identifying illicit, improper, or pernicious influences on judgment.
For example, empiricists demonstrate hindsight bias in judgments
of reasonableness and recommend interventions to remove that
bias. Identifying legal biases, their sources and remedies are
critically important. But these are not the only social scientific
questions one could ask of legal concepts. This Essay poses …
