Ai Companions And The Lessons Of Family Law, Clare Huntington
Ai Companions And The Lessons Of Family Law, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
Virtual friends and lovers powered by artificial intelligence are rapidly moving to the center of our emotional and social lives. Millions of people turn to AI companions every day for conversation, romance, sexual intimacy, therapy, and education. AI companionship holds promise, potentially reducing loneliness, supporting people without access to mental health treatment, helping students learn, and offering a judgment-free space for sensitive conversations. But AI companionship also raises significant concerns. The technology's addictiveness may exacerbate loneliness and can undermine human relationships. Therapy bots may prove more harmful than helpful. AI companions can be emotionally abusive. And their access to the …
Omahe Rak Usah Apik-Apik: Adequate Housing Problems Of The Urban Poor Along Railway Tracks, Syahwal -
Omahe Rak Usah Apik-Apik: Adequate Housing Problems Of The Urban Poor Along Railway Tracks, Syahwal -
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
As urban development accelerates, urbanization has simultaneously grown as an inseparable phenomenon. However, beneath this transformation lies a crisis within the capitalist system known as overaccumulation, which has led to the marginalization of urban poor groups. This phenomenon results in the creation of slums, one of which is found in the periphery of railway tracks, where the urban poor reside. Semarang the capital of Central Java Province, Indonesia, is an apt example of such developments,. This study takes as starting point that the right to adequate housing is an integral part of human rights and addresses the issue of why …

Oligarchy, State, And Cryptopia, Julie E. Cohen
Oligarchy, State, And Cryptopia, Julie E. Cohen
Fordham Law Review
Theoretical accounts of power in networked digital environments typically do not give systematic attention to the phenomenon of oligarchy—to extreme concentrations of material wealth deployed to obtain and protect durable personal advantage. The biggest technology platform companies are dominated to a singular extent by a small group of very powerful and extremely wealthy men who have played uniquely influential roles in structuring technological development in particular ways that align with their personal beliefs and who now wield unprecedented informational, sociotechnical, and political power. Developing an account of oligarchy and, more specifically, of tech oligarchy within contemporary political economy therefore has …
Competition, Comity, And Confusion: Reconciling The Ftaia’S Import Exclusion With Its Direct Effects Provision, Elliot Lam
Fordham Law Review
The debate surrounding the Sherman Act’s extraterritorial scope represents a tension between two competing objectives: protecting the U.S. economy from foreign anticompetitive conduct on one hand and respecting the sovereign authority of other nation-states on the other. Applying U.S. law abroad risks undermining sovereign authority by regulating foreign economies, though such regulation appears necessary in some cases to protect U.S. consumers.
Congress’s attempt to square these objectives through enacting the Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act of 1982 (FTAIA) failed to settle the matter. The statute left courts with two new questions: how to distinguish “import” from “nonimport” commerce, and how …

The Reasonable Officer And The Disabled Subject, Jamelia N. Morgan
The Reasonable Officer And The Disabled Subject, Jamelia N. Morgan
Vanderbilt Law Review
Police violence against disabled people is a fundamental problem of policing. Whether through so called wellness checks, quality of life policing, or coercive state civil commitment procedures, disabled people are often on the receiving end of intrusion, violence, and rights violations by law enforcement. Yet, so, too, is everyone else. That disabled people are similarly, and yet uniquely, vulnerable to intrusion, violence, and rights violations by law enforcement might seem like just another group to add to the list of groups harmed by policing and police violence. However, the focus on disability does not merely bring to the forefront problems …

Large Language Models suffer from prompt variance—meaning they’ll give you totally different legal answers depending on how you phrase your question. Jonathan Choi demonstrated this recently when he asked ChatGPT five legal questions, each rephrased 2,000 times, and watched as the bot spat out different answers every time. When you tell somebody that AI is going to replace the judge, the lawyer, and the legal system in the next twenty years, Choi’s article has become the go-to rebuttal; it’s the crown jewel of the “AI bad” genre.
Choi’s absolutely right that LLM’s are bad judges. And, if every AI was …

Emirati Administrative Law In Confronting The Impacts Of Climate Change, Prof. .Montassar Elouardi
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة
The study is grounded in a central thesis of significant methodological depth: administrative law in the United Arab Emirates is undergoing a profound structural transformation, one that entails a reconfiguration of several classical concepts that have historically shaped the discipline. This conceptual rearticulation results from the integration of the phenomenon of climate charge – understood in its technical, systemic, and global dimensions – into the very core of administrative law’s field of concern.
1- The study demonstrates that climate change no longer belongs solely to the realm of environmental law or public international law; it has become a fully-fledged administrative …
A Fake Friend? Ai Companions Are Exactly That, Seow Hon Tan
A Fake Friend? Ai Companions Are Exactly That, Seow Hon Tan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Tan Seow Hon discussed how AI companions, which promise emotionally intelligent companionship, have blurred the line between human and machine relationships by mimicking empathy, memory, and affection. She suggested that while such technologies may ease loneliness, they risk fostering narcissism, diminishing real human connection, and replacing authentic friendship with comforting illusions that erode the capacity for love and community.

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini
Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini
Seattle University Law Review
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has provided broad immunity to online platforms for third-party content which was the foundation for the internet's growth. However, the rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to produce algorithms to curate content to users of online services has blurred the line between being a passive host of third party content and active editorial control. This Note examines the legal, policy, and constitutional implications of applying Section 230 immunity to platforms that use AI to curate and promote third-party content. This analysis argues that algorithmic promotion of third-party content constitutes a platform's …

The Key To Acquiring The Language Of Law, Science, And Technology In The Esl College Classroom, Patricia George-Hunter
Journal of English Learner Education
Since vocabulary plays a significant role in second language acquisition, expansive vocabulary targets should be set and pursued. This paper explores the results of introducing affixes to develop vocabulary and increase motivation for beginner to intermediate-level English language learners (ELLs) pursuing academic disciplines in law, science, and technology at a New York City community college. Participants included 23 ELLs with diverse linguistic, educational, and sociocultural backgrounds enrolled in an online synchronous Integrative Language Seminar (ILS) designed to develop all areas of English language proficiency. Pre‑, post‑, delayed tests, questionnaires, and post‑intervention interviews were conducted and analyzed to establish the language …
Rightsizing Regulations To Foster Innovation And A Healthy Business Environment: Insights From Elite Executives, Brian Charles Mulligan, Nelson Granados
Rightsizing Regulations To Foster Innovation And A Healthy Business Environment: Insights From Elite Executives, Brian Charles Mulligan, Nelson Granados
Engaged Management ReView
This study examines insights from business executives on how TRAILS—that is, taxes, regulations, assessments, interventions, litigation, and subsidies—influence entrepreneurial behavior and firm performance. Using an applied constructivist grounded theory design, we conducted 17 in-depth interviews to identify how top business executives view the effects of regulations on business performance. We adopt the premise that the right level and set of regulations lead to a healthier business environment. We find that right-sized TRAILS catalyze entrepreneurial dynamism, whereas wrong-sized TRAILS impose hidden opportunity costs, stifle innovation, and erode institutional trust. Crucially, the study reveals the vital role of the government as …

Why Aviation Fuel Remains Untaxed: Legal Barriers To Aviation Fuel Taxation, Giedre Lideikyte Huber
Why Aviation Fuel Remains Untaxed: Legal Barriers To Aviation Fuel Taxation, Giedre Lideikyte Huber
Pace Environmental Law Review
Aviation fuel remains largely untaxed worldwide, despite the sector’s growing contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. This article examines the legal foundations of this exemption and argues that it results less from fiscal necessity than from historical international law and institutional inertia. The Chicago Convention (1944), subsequent ICAO policy instruments, and a dense network of air service agreements have collectively constrained states’ ability to tax aviation fuel, a stance reinforced by the delegation of aviation emissions to ICAO under the Kyoto Protocol. A comparative analysis of the European Union, Switzerland, and the United States shows that domestic frameworks replicate these …
