Reasonable Accommodations And Awkward Compromises: Issues Concerning Learning Disabled Students And Professional Schools In The Law School Context, Lisa A. Eichhorn Jan 1997

Reasonable Accommodations And Awkward Compromises: Issues Concerning Learning Disabled Students And Professional Schools In The Law School Context, Lisa A. Eichhorn

Faculty Publications

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, colleges and universities are prohibited from discriminating against qualified students with learning disabilities and must reasonably accommodate such disabilities so that students have a genuine opportunity to complete academic programs successfully. Not surprisingly, just like their non-disabled peers, a number of learning disabled college graduates are choosing to enter professions such as law and medicine. Their entry into professional schools has raised a number of legal issues concerning their qualification to matriculate, their need for accommodations, and their eventual ability to practice successfully. …

Networks In International Economic Integration: Fragmented States And The Dilemmas Of Neo-Liberalism, Sol Picciotto Jan 1997

Networks In International Economic Integration: Fragmented States And The Dilemmas Of Neo-Liberalism, Sol Picciotto

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Current discussions of "globalization" afford an opportunity to. reflect on the development of the modern international system and its governance as well as to evaluate prospects and strategies for the fu- ture. However, the term "globalization" is ambiguous. It conceals di- verse and sometimes conflicting trends and strategies; it appears to project a post-Cold War optimism of increasing global unity and pros- pects for a new world order based on a strengthened framework of international institutions. Nonetheless, tendencies towards fragmen- tation exist, in addition to an increasing awareness of diversity and, perhaps, global disorder. Certainly, efforts are being made to …

Honesty, Privacy, And Shame: When Gay People Talk About Other Gay People To Nongay People, David L. Chambers, Steven K. Homer

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

There is a longstanding convention among lesbians and gay men in the United States: Do not reveal the sexuality of a gay person to a heterosexual person; unless you are certain that the gay person does not regard his sexuality as a secret. Lie if necessary to protect her secret. Violating the convention by "outing" another person is widely considered a serious social sin.

Eye On The World, Jose E. Alvarez, Virginia A. Gordan

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

In a special section coinciding with the International Reunion of Law School graduates, Law School graduates who are deeply involved in the globalization of legal practice respond to the question, "If you could leap ahead 10 years, how do you think what you are doing now will change?" And in a thought-provoking prologue, Professor of Law Jose Alvarez and Assistant Dean for International Programs Virginia A. Gordan consider the historical - and historic - impact of Law School graduates from overseas on the legal profession.

"Do Dogs Ape?" Or "Do Apes Dog?" And Does It Matter? Broadening And Deepening Cognitive Ethology, Marc Bekoff

Animal Law Review

The scope of animal rights is much broader than the vast majority of individuals believe. People spend little time considering how our legal system's treatment of animals affects society. Hozever, through the efforts of people who have recognized the law's shortcomings and have sought to correct thm, justice may eventually prevail. Un1fortunately, the best means by which to accomplish justice for animals is not clear, and disagreements inevitably arise. Tracking The Adc: Ranchers' Boon, Taxpayers' Burden, Wildlife's Bane, David Hoch, Will Carrington Heath

Animal Law Review

Approximately thirty five million dollars are spent each year by the Animal Damage Control division of the US Department of Agriculture to destroy predator animals that supposedly kill livestock. The methods by which the ADC kills these "predators" are appalling. Mr. Hoch argues that the funding for this program is excessive, irresponsible, and raises serious ethical questions. He concludes that ADC activities should be terminated immediately.

Genetic Privacy In Washington State: Policy Considerations And A Model Genetic Privacy Act, Karen Ann Jensen Jan 1997

Genetic Privacy In Washington State: Policy Considerations And A Model Genetic Privacy Act, Karen Ann Jensen

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment presents background information concerning genetic information and genetic testing. Section III then argues that privacy and autonomy are significant policy issues in connection with genetic information. As a result, the decision to have genetic testing performed should be an individual's choice, and genetic testing should never be compelled. Section IV argues that the failure to give genetic information special protection in the law has potentially harmful consequences. Section V surveys current efforts to protect genetic privacy, both by the federal government and states other than Washington. Section V also analyzes the current state of medical records privacy protection …
