Method of Instruction
The educational program of the law school is designed to equip its graduates to render the highest quality of legal services, while instilling a sense of professional responsibility. The case method of instruction is used in many courses. The beginning student is trained in the analysis and solution of legal problems by the application of logical reasoning. The course of study is not designed to teach legal rules, but rather to provide a foundation for the application and analysis of the law and the development of professional skills. Substantive courses, dealing with the content of the law, …

Journal Articles
Forums such as this develop our understanding of current efforts to bring about positive change for America's poor. The Journal's compilation and dissemination of important, thoughtful essays on poverty is laudable.
The one thing that is clear about the poor and the homeless is that their problems are multi-faceted. No one theory or group can provide all the solutions. People are poor and homeless for a wide variety of reasons, and they need different kinds of help. Providing more income assistance will not cure poverty, and providing more housing will not remedy homelessness. Neither the public nor the private sector …

The Child Care Tax Credit: An Investment In The Future, Laurie E. Sherwood
UC Law SF International Law Review
The future of the United States lies in one of its most important resources: its children. Child care plays a key role in the development of this resource. However, we face a child care crisis in the United States: both in terms of costs and quality. This Note, in an effort to address the high costs of child care, discusses the Child Care Tax Credit in the United States, a federal program designed to provide tax relief for working parents who incur child care expenses. A discussion of the Canadian tax approach to child care expenses and a comparison of …

Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Faculty Articles
I begin with my version of the ideally antagonistic interaction of feminist theory with the law. I locate my discussion between the extremes of grand theory and unique experience. I consider the central, pressing task of feminist theory to be challenging existing law and legal doctrines through the articulation and establishment of a theory of difference. In this essay I divide my discussion of the theory of difference into two sections. The first section concerns the theoretical and political necessity of establishing the differences between men and women. Articulation of the extent of this manifestation of difference illustrates that the …
