A Positive Right To Free Labor, Rebecca E. Zietlow
A Positive Right To Free Labor, Rebecca E. Zietlow
Seattle University Law Review
This Article seeks to resurrect a lost thread in our civil rights tradition: the idea that workers have a positive right to free labor. A positive right to free labor includes the right to work for a living wage free of undue coercion and free from discrimination based on immutable characteristics. Not merely the negative guarantee against the state’s infringement on individual equality and liberty, a positive right to free labor is immediately enforceable against state and private parties. A positive right to free labor is rooted in the Thirteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude …

The Price Of Carceral Citizenship: Punishment, Surveillance, And Social Welfare Policy In An Age Of Carceral Expansion, Reuben Jonathan Miller, Amanda Alexander
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
The unprecedented rise in the number of people held in U.S. jails and prisons has garnered considerable attention from policy makers, activists, and academics alike. Signaled in part by Michelle Alexander’s New York Times bestseller, The New Jim Crow, and the unlikely coalition of activists, policy makers, celebrities, and business leaders on both sides of the political aisle who have pledged to end mass incarceration in our lifetime, the prison system has returned to public policy discourse in a way that was unforeseen less than a decade ago. On any given day in 2014, just over 2.3 million people were …

The Pledge For The Public Good: A Student-Led Initiative To Incorporate Morality And Justice In Every Classroom, Alexi Freeman, Katherine Steefel
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
“The first thing I lost in law school was the reason I came.” Many students arrive at law school with intentions to dedicate their careers to supporting others, but unfortunately, this becomes their reality. To reverse this tide and integrate public interest ideals into the entire law school curriculum, the Chancellor’s Scholars at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law developed the Pledge for the Public Good. The Pledge asks faculty to make explicit connections to the public good in their classrooms. In the inaugural year, over sixty full-time professors signed on. This article, written by a faculty member …

Contributions Of The Jesuits To Human Rights In Mexico: A Case Study Of Center Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez, Luis Arriaga Valenzuela
Contributions Of The Jesuits To Human Rights In Mexico: A Case Study Of Center Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez, Luis Arriaga Valenzuela
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In Mexico, as in other parts of the world, human rights violations have deep historical roots. In the forty years before this study, these violations had been increasing, especially with respect to excluded populations and vulnerable groups, such as women, indigenous peoples, migrants, and victims of repression (Center Prodh, 2013). To reverse or at least decrease these conditions, disenfranchised people needed to become aware of their rights within civil society. Toward that end, diverse non-governmental organizations (NGOs) had taken on the task of providing education and strategic practices to disenfranchised people and communities. The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) had …
When Children Object: Amplifying An Older Child’S Objection To Termination Of Parental Rights, Brent Pattison
When Children Object: Amplifying An Older Child’S Objection To Termination Of Parental Rights, Brent Pattison
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Each year, thousands of children become wards of the state when a court terminates the legal rights of their parents. Between 2010 and 2014, more than 307,000 children lost their legal relationships to their parents in Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) proceedings. A growing percentage of child welfare cases involve older children. At the same time, too many young people lose their legal relationships with their parents without a family waiting to adopt them. The stakes are high for children in TPR cases; nonetheless, many children—even older children—cannot meaningfully participate in proceedings. Moreover, TPR cases threaten parents’ and children’s rights …

Not Ideas Of The Thing But The Thing Itself: Imagining A Support Group For Separated And Divorced Fathers As A Site Of Legal Education, Thomas Mcmorrow
Dalhousie Law Journal
Legal education is not just about attaining an abstract knowledge of formal institutions, norms, and processes; it is also about developing insight into oneself and ones relationships. Therefore, understanding and developing the personal and social conditions that make governance through law possible are crucial elements of legal education. This article highlights legal education's potential role in fostering every person's sense of implication in-and responsibility forbuilding a just society In order to illustrate this concept, this article looks at the ways in which DADs, a support group for separated and divorced fathers, constitutes a site of legal education.
A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei
A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei
Graduate School of Art Theses
Art has the potency of mediation: bridging human differences, questioning voids in historical trajectories, negotiating spaces of relevance, and most importantly, being signifiers that embody the absent. I speak in a borrowed language, a multilingual visual tongue, inspired by a culmination of Western and African Art modes of practices to create charged platforms for multicultural communication.
My art presents visual portals that allow for intercultural and interracial mingling as issues of colorism, present-day colonialism, gender inequality and the politics of dress are foregrounded for collective deliberation. The essence of the work is often activated and brought to its full potential …

Century bailout policy is the government's discretion. However, when there is resistance in the Parliament, this policy is a problem that until now has not as well satisfy the parties. On the other hand, the economic crisis is a reality that is happening in the community. Government as the policy makers feel they have the authority as stipulated in the legislation in force. Therefore, the decision to prosecute government policy is regarded as a form of criminalization policies. This study tried to find a middle ground on the issue. The standpoint of administrative law is used as an analysis in …
