The following work, as the dates of the respective parts evince, was begun by its unhappy Author in his apartments at Newgate, on the evening of the day subsequent to his trial and conviction at Justice Hall; and was finished, amidst various necessary interruptions, in little more than the space of two months.
The few little pieces subjoined to the Thoughts, and the Author’s Last Prayer, were found amongst his papers. Their evident connection with the Poem was the inducement for adding them to the volume.

The United States Constitution, Article 1, Section 9, prohibited Congress from banning the importation of slaves until the year 1808. A bill to do this was first introduced in Congress by Senator Stephen Roe Bradley of Vermont in December 1805, and its passage was recommended by President Jefferson in his annual message to Congress in December 1806. In March 1807, Congress passed the legislation, and President Thomas Jefferson signed it into law on March 3, 1807. Subsequently, on March 25, 1807, the British Parliament also passed an act banning the slave trade aboard British ships. The effective date of the …

She is forbidden from keeping a "disorderly" establishment or one that permits "any Cock-fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or Keep any Billiard-Table, or other Gaming-Table, or Shuffle-Board, within the Inn" or "any Out-House, Yard or Garden belonging thereunto." ... Abraham Libbee of Rye, New Hampshire, complained to a Justice of the Peace that Joseph Jenness had stolen two of his oxen. This resulted in the issuance of a warrant, the seizure of two oxen from Jenness, and the indictment of the latter for theft. After the Attorney General dropped the case Jenness sued Libbee for malicious prosecution, asserting that he had “caused such a misrepresentation of facts to be made to the ... Grand Jury as induced them” to return the indictment.

In the fall of 1749, the widow Elizabeth Bird of Portsmouth, New Hampshire complained in forma pauperis to the Superior Court that her son John Bird, age fourteen, was apprenticed to a ropemaker named Richard Winter but that the latter (who was in prison) had for a long period neglected John--failing “to provide suitable and sufficient meat drink lodging and clothing” and not permitting him to attend public worship. She prayed simply for “the advisement of this Court on the Premises and that your complainant may have some relief in the Premises.
