The United States' Enforcement Of The Convention On International Trade In Endangered Species Of Wild Fauna And Flora, Meena Alagappan
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
Species loss is an extremely serious, continuing problem. While habitat destruction poses one of the most imminent threats to the survival of wild animals and plants, international trade in wildlife is also a major cause of diminishing biological diversity worldwide. The global market for wildlife is very large, and the goods involved are usually luxury items, such as fur coats and ivory carvings. When this trade is not harnessed, it often tips the balance toward extinction for various forms of wildlife.

Children Watching Television Advertising: What's Wrong With This Picture, Peter Hallifax
Children Watching Television Advertising: What's Wrong With This Picture, Peter Hallifax
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
In 1983 the FCC abandoned its role as regulator of children's television advertising. Since then, Congress has been trying, so far without success, to enact legislation compelling the FCC to resume its former role. This Note reviews the history of children's television advertising regulation, examines the need for such rules, and concludes that the type of rules contemplated by Congress presume that television advertising directed at children is inherently deceptive. The Note concludes that this presumption is unwarranted, and that the issue should be fully. explored before laws which restrict children's viewing choices are enacted.

Improving Substance Abuse Treatment For Women, Brenda V. Smith
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Alcohol and other drug use among women of child-bearing age has increased dramatically, and, as a result, more pregnant women are faced with alcohol and other drug problems. The only known national estimate suggests that 11 percent of pregnant women used illegal drugs during their pregnancy. Although pregnant crack-addicted women have received the most media attention, the problem is no less serious for alcohol and other drugs.
Alcohol and other drug use during pregnancy has negative physical and psychological consequences for both the mother and the child. Alcoholic mothers are at risk of having infants with fetal alcohol syndrome, which …

The Elderly Incompetent: The Right To Die With Dignity, Cary C. Homes
Campbell Law Review
This Comment will address the right to withdraw nutrition and hydration from the growing number of elderly incompetent patients who are dying, but who retain some minimal level of consciousness. Part I will discuss the legal bases for the right to refuse medical treatment. It will note the state interests that are contrary to this right, and will review important judicial decisions which have addressed an incompetent individual's right to have life-sustaining treatment withdrawn. Part II will discuss state legislatures' responses to this delicate issue. Part III will focus specifically on the withdrawal of feeding tubes from elderly incompetent, but …
