Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, And American Capitalism, Kris Principe
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, And American Capitalism, Kris Principe
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Pope Francis’ writing of both Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel) and Laudato Si’ (On Care For Our Common Home) has led several in the popular press to comment on the Pope’s distrust of capitalism. Here, the pope’s commentary is reconciled with the American perspective on capitalism. Consumer sovereignty and corporate governance, carried out in accordance with the three pillars of Catholic Social Justice of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity, can fulfill the Pope’s mandate in Evangelii Gaudium.
On Evangelii Gaudium: An Asia/Pacific Perspective, Young Back Choi
On Evangelii Gaudium: An Asia/Pacific Perspective, Young Back Choi
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Evangelii Gaudium is largely divided into two parts: one is on evangelism and the other concerns the social and economic conditions of the time in which evangelism is to take place. The chief aim of Evangelii Gaudium is to restore, as an integral part of sharing the joy of the Gospel, the dignity of the poor, which is presumably lost because of inequality in the modern society. Pope Francis admits that “… neither the Pope nor the Church have a monopoly on the interpretation of social realities or the proposal of solutions to contemporary problems”. Pope Francis offers his views/diagnoses …

How Useful Is Gsv As An Environmental Observation Tool? An Analysis Of The Evidence So Far., Katherine Nesse, Leah Airt

Researchers in many disciplines have turned to Google Street View to replace pedestrian- or carbased in-person observation of streetscapes. It is most prevalent within the research literature on the relationship between neighborhood environments and public health but has been used as diverse as disaster recovery, ecology and wildlife habitat, and urban design. Evaluations of the tool have found that the results of GSV-based observation are similar to the results from in-person observation although the similarity depends on the type of characteristic being observed. Larger, permanent and discrete features showed more consistency between the two methods and smaller, transient and judgmental …
Medical Assistance In Dying: Lessons For Australia From Canada, Jocelyn Downie
Medical Assistance In Dying: Lessons For Australia From Canada, Jocelyn Downie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Canada has recently witnessed dramatic changes in end-of-life law and policy. Most notably, we have moved from a prohibitive to a permissive regime with respect to medical assistance in dying (MAiD). As a number of Australian states are actively engaged in debates about whether to decriminalise MAiD, it is worth reviewing the Canadian experience and drawing out any lessons that might usefully inform the current processes in Australia.

In 1972, the astronauts of Apollo 17, NASA’s final manned-mission to the Moon, took a photograph of the entire hemisphere of Earth. The photograph shows the continents of Africa and Antarctica in hues of red and brown, surrounded by the vibrant blue oceans and topped by swirling white clouds. It has become an iconic image. Studying the Earth from afar, Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17’s commander, reported to the Houston command center with just a touch of irony: “We’re not the first to discover this, but we’d like to confirm, from the crew of Apollo 17, that the world is round.” …

Exploitation And Abuse Of The Elderly During The Great Recession: A Maine Practitioner's Perspective, Denis T. Culley, Hannah Sanders University Of Maine School Of Law
Maine Law Review
The practitioner often cringes on first exposure to elder abuse. Beating, cheating, or cynically misusing a parent or other beloved elder not only shocks and disheartens those who stumble upon it, but often leaves the practitioner, like the poet, with “a tighter breathing and Zero at the bone.” Nothing in our culture prepares us to behold the abused elder. The elder herself is often similarly shocked and ashamed. Many times, an abused elder is in denial and may feel that she has somehow allowed the abuse to occur. Or the elder may feel that the abuser—oftentimes a family member, trusted …
