Control Of Charity Solicitations, Ralph E. Mcgeorge Jan 1965

Control Of Charity Solicitations, Ralph E. Mcgeorge

Cleveland State Law Review

Giving, whether it is done wisely or not, is big business these days-totaling approximately 10 billion dollars in 1963. The value of our philanthropic and religious organizations, in terms of capital investment, was recently estimated at more than 68 billion dollars. By these yardsticks alone, philanthropy ranks as one of our Big Ten industries. The real "shocker" is that over 500 million dollars (billion) of our hard earned money finds its way into the well lined pockets of charity racketeers each year. This is a great deal of money to be lost to worthwhile charities and institutions, almost as much …

Reflections Upon Hegel's Concept Of Property, Contract, Punishment, And Constitutional Law, Morris D. Forkosch Dec 1964

Reflections Upon Hegel's Concept Of Property, Contract, Punishment, And Constitutional Law, Morris D. Forkosch

Vanderbilt Law Review

Codification and re-codification in federal and state jurisdictions has proceeded in a geometrical progression these past decades. To what extent is the old law yielding or, au contraire, to what extent is the ancient law reappearing? For example, are Plato's views on crime and punishment being revived, continued, or changed?' Or,to what extent are Hegel's views in a certain few legal areas of present interest and value? As we shall see, an understanding of Hegel's juris-prudential views, as related to specific topics, is a present-day pragmatic necessity. We propose to seek these views, albeit briefly, in the fields of property, …

Prejudicial In11uence On Jury Of Newspaper Published During Trial-People V. Purvis, Michigan Law Review Nov 1964

Prejudicial In11uence On Jury Of Newspaper Published During Trial-People V. Purvis, Michigan Law Review

Michigan Law Review

Defendant had been paroled after serving four years of a sentence for second degree murder. While on parole, he was tried for another homicide and convicted of murder in the first degree. In separate penalty trials, juries had twice assessed the death sentence, which, on both occasions, had been set aside by the reviewing court. During the third trial, the Sunday newspaper in the local county published a front-page article attacking the leniency of the parole system, attributing the area's high crime rate partly to the recidivist tendencies of parolees, and quoting the county sheriff's opinion that defendant should be …

Japanese Investment Trusts, Hiroo Mizushima, Howard L. Lund, Masao Sekiguchi Aug 1964

Japanese Investment Trusts, Hiroo Mizushima, Howard L. Lund, Masao Sekiguchi

Washington Law Review

Foreigners have been freely permitted to purchase shares of Japanese corporations since 1950, with the condition that the principal would not be freely remitted abroad. Until 1960 little attention was paid to this opportunity. The recent increase in foreign interest in Japanese equities has coincided with the easing of currency and exchange restrictions, particularly the shortening of the waiting period for the conversion of invested principal to the original currency of the investor. As of April 1, 1963, the waiting period was entirely eliminated, with the expectation of increased foreign investments. Because of the significant increase of foreign offerings in …
