The Democracy Of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles E. Wyzanski Jr. Apr 1954

The Democracy Of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles E. Wyzanski Jr.

Vanderbilt Law Review

Oliver Wendell Holmes is everywhere recognized as a great American. His life story has been depicted on the stage, fictionalized in a popular biography,' and majestically summarized in the Dictionary of American Biography by his successor and disciple. Every undergraduate knows of Holmes' wounds in three Civil War battles, his seminal lectures on The Common Law delivered at the Lowell Institute, his pioneer decisions in labor cases in the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and his long and distinguished tenure as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. But the recital of his public offices does not …

Lectures On Federal Antitrust Laws, University Of Michigan Law School Jan 1954

Lectures On Federal Antitrust Laws, University Of Michigan Law School

Summer Institute on International and Comparative Law

The papers delivered at the 1953 Institute deal chiefly with current problems and policy questions under three major federal antitrust laws - the Sherman Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, and the Clayton Act, including the Robinson-Patman Amendment. These statutes affect the daily operations of all sizes and types of American business. Judicial interpretations and the administration and enforcement of these laws involve both legal and economic criteria and tests of competition and monopoly. The Institute provided a forum for authoritative analysis of these aspects in order to create a better understanding of the antitrust laws as one of the …

The Income Tax And Accounting Records For Illegal Businesses, Thomas J. Whiting Jan 1954

The Income Tax And Accounting Records For Illegal Businesses, Thomas J. Whiting

Cleveland State Law Review

The activities of gamblers and other illegal operators have received considerable public notice recently as a result of the Kefauver Committee's investigations. Although the amounts of money involved in these operations are astronomical, no complete records are maintained by these individuals. Amounts entered on income tax returns of this type are completely incapable of verification in the usual method because of the incompleteness of the records and data available. Admittedly these operators are in the unenviable position of being required to keep complete records for income tax purposes, but being afraid to do so because of their evidentiary value to …
