Salafism, Wahhabism, And The Definition Of Sunni Islam, Rob J. Williams
Salafism, Wahhabism, And The Definition Of Sunni Islam, Rob J. Williams
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
My capstone deals with the historical definition of Sunni Islam, and how it has changed in approximately the past 200 years. Around 1800, Sunni Islam was pretty clearly defined by an adherence to one of four maddhabs, or schools of law: the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools and are all based in nearly a millennium of legal scholarship. Since 1800, however, numerous reform movements have sprung up which disavow previous scholarship and interpret Islamic law their own way. However, certain reformist groups, such as Traditionalist Salafis and Wahhabis, claim that their version of Islam is the only “pure” …

Laying The Foundation For Social Media Prosecutions Under 18 U.S.C. § 2339b, Ronbert H. Schwartz
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
American lawmakers and law enforcement officials face a situation with no precedent, no standard operating procedure, and no end in sight: international terrorism. International terrorism has threatened the American way of life for hundreds of years, but the proliferation of terrorist recruitment through social media platforms has heightened the risk and sheer destruction that global terror attacks create. America must take a role in eliminating this new wave of recruitment and the overall war on terrorism; but the lack of accountability of social media companies hinders America’s ability to fight back. This Article explains and argues that holding social media …
Explaining The Rise Of Isis, Anas Alqaed
Explaining The Rise Of Isis, Anas Alqaed
Political Science Theses and Capstones
In this paper I study the circumstances that led to the rise the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS/Daesh) and its economic power. I use articles, testimonies before US House of Representatives and analyze economic data to generate facts and draw conclusions. All references rely on primary source documents that were not released in an official capacity by ISIS. These are documents that have been released online by pro or anti-ISIS activists or information that was gathered and analyzed by research centers and international organizations. It is worth noting that non-officially released documents were very helpful in shedding more …

Library As Publisher: New Models Of Scholarly Communication For A New Era, Sarah Kalikman Lippincott
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Why Library Publishing?
In a post on library publishing for the influential Scholarly Kitchen blog, publishing consultant Joe Esposito (2013) asked rhetorically, “Why would anyone want to get into this business when those of us who were already there were trying desperately to get out?” The publishing community has established that publishing is not easy, it is not usually profitable at a small scale, it is in a constant state of “crisis,” and it is dealing with a variety of challenges and tensions, from changes in technology to changes in the marketplace. So why don’t libraries leave this up to …

This Essay considers the 2015 papal encyclical Laudato si's' engagement with Islamic religious and legal traditions in order to identify shared ethical and jurisprudential commitments and their broader implications for law. By 2025, Muslims will constitute 30% of the population of the world,2 while Catholics will likely be between 15% and 20%. The history of interreligious conflict is long and enduring. In many cases, legal structures related to security and immigration have exacerbated these tensions, prompting uncertainty and instability.5 Laudato si' is a strategic document, intended to address climate change, increasing economic inequity, and interreligious conflict by opening a space …
