The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall Jun 1965

The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall

Masters Theses

I. The Background of the Conflict

In the summer of 1932, while the world's attention was focused upon Japanese aggression in Manchuria, a border skirmish in the upper reaches of the Plata valley ignited a conflict which could not be extinguished by the good offices of the Pan-American Union or the peace-making machinery of the League of Nations. The prize in question, nearly one hundred and fifty thousand square miles of savanna and swamp, would be minuscule in comparison with the territorial acquisitions of the dictators of that era, but to the two politically unstable and highly nationalistic nations contesting …

Firearms Legislation, Joe B. Brown Jun 1965

Firearms Legislation, Joe B. Brown

Vanderbilt Law Review

Throughout recorded history men have armed themselves with weapons for use against their fellow men and for protection from environmental hazards. An increasing population combined with increasingly effective and deadly weapons has created a problem in the control of private weapons. At the present time every state and district in the United States and the federal government have some restrictions on firearms.' Are they adequate? Many think not. A recent Gallup Poll shows that seventy-three per cent of the people in the United States would favor a law requiring a police permit before a person could buy a gun. Even …

Distributions By Charitable Organizations: Their Effect On Tax Exempt Status And Deductibility Of Donations Received, Thomas H. Belknap Jun 1965

Distributions By Charitable Organizations: Their Effect On Tax Exempt Status And Deductibility Of Donations Received, Thomas H. Belknap

Vanderbilt Law Review

The number and importance of tax exempt organizations has steadily grown in the past decade to the point where there were over 45,000 as of the beginning of 1963, as compared with 12,000 at the end of 1952. "Unquestionably, the economic life of our nation has be-come so intertwined with foundations that unless something is done about them, they will hold a dominant position in every phase of American life." This, according to the Patman Report, is because"multi-million-dollar foundations have replaced the trusts which were broken up during the Theodore Roosevelt administration." Both the Patman Report and the increased activity …

Legal Positivism And The Natural Law: The Controversy Between Professor Hart And Professor Fuller, George Breckenridge Jun 1965

Legal Positivism And The Natural Law: The Controversy Between Professor Hart And Professor Fuller, George Breckenridge

Vanderbilt Law Review

Professor Hart defends legal positivism and Professor Fuller sets out his view of the natural law. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Fuller is against positivism and Hart against natural law. Each is an untypical representative of the varied traditions that bear these names. Each is, at the same time, because of his radical restatement and defense of his positions, probably the most reasonable and least extreme antagonist. In this dialogue, if anywhere, we are likely to discover the true issues and the common ground, if any, between the two positions. In fact each concedes, frankly or …

Noise And The Law, George A. Spater Jun 1965

Noise And The Law, George A. Spater

Michigan Law Review

For practical purposes the discussion of the law of noise can be considered in two parts: first, the rights of a complainant against a private person and second, the rights of a complainant against the government or an agency acting by government authority.

The Expanding Horizons Of Legal Services--I, Monrad G. Paulsen

West Virginia Law Review

In no country of the world are lawyers so important or so influential as they are in America. Lawyers dominate legislative bodies almost everywhere in the United States; they often provide executive leadership for business enterprize and voluntary associations. The best lawyers are respected highly and rewarded with the greatest prizes. The theme of this paper is that the services offered by the legal profession, a profession already engaged in hundreds of tasks, are rapidly expanding. Some new ways of working are emerging. Some old functions are being performed in a new manner. More resources are being provided for that …

Justice Brewer And Substantive Due Process: A Conservative Court Revisited, Robert E. Gamer Mar 1965

Justice Brewer And Substantive Due Process: A Conservative Court Revisited, Robert E. Gamer

Vanderbilt Law Review

From the heat of ideological battle which has accompanied the emergence of America into the status of a capitalistic society, late nineteenth century conservatives have emerged in many circles with a reputation for being selfish, profit-hungry individuals attempting to hide their rapacity under a cloak of pleasant platitudes and private charity. In addition to falling under this less-than-favorable shadow, those of this breed who presumably came to cluster about the Supreme Court of the United States have been attacked by liberals for subverting the Constitution of the United States into an instrument to serve the acquisitive interests of the capitalists …
