Remediation Of Deficit Automatic Level Functions As Related To Second Grade Reading Achievement, Jack R. Hall
Remediation Of Deficit Automatic Level Functions As Related To Second Grade Reading Achievement, Jack R. Hall
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a study designed to determine if remedial procedures suggested by the authors of the ITPA would improve specific psycholinguistic functions and reading achievement. The Ss were 18 second grade children placed in matched pairs. They received 15 minutes of instruction per day for 60 days. The results did not indicate a significant improvement by the experimental group when compared to the control group
Recommendations include repeating the same experimental procedures using Ss with greater psycholinguistic deficits.

The sections are divided into research related to objective tools to describe students' writing, such as the T-unit developed by Kellogg Hunt; specific writing problems, such as dialect interference and hearing disorders; methods based on grammatical analysis to improve writing; and other methods to improve writing. Three areas recommended for further research are work with low ability level students, rhetoric, and spelling.
The Short-Term Effects Of The Yakima Valley School Language Development Program On Non-Institutionalized Persons With Developmental Disabilities Of Different Chronological And Mental Ages, Noreen F. Simonson
All Master's Theses
This paper provided a field test of the expressive and receptive language development program written by the staff of Yakima Valley State School for the persons with developmental disabilities, Selah Washington. The program is a progressive one which was based on the developmental theories of Gesell and Bayley. This study sought to define the parameters of applicability from the program. The subjects, both male, non-institutionalized, persons with developmental disabilities, represented a lower and higher level of functioning than had previously been instructed with this program. The results of the study indicated gains in language development for both subjects.

A Method For Surveying Literacy In Minority Languages In Mexico, Steven T. Egland
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a testing method for surveying the literacy needs of minority language groups in Mexico. The tests were designed to determine the approximate percentage of adults in a given Mexican Indian town who can read and write in Spanish and in their own Indian language. The reading tests allowed subjects to be classified according to their abilities.
The tests were intended to improve on some previous studies of literacy in minority language groups outside of the United States. As the tests designed by this investigator were used in three language groups of Mexico …

Can A Gaming Approach Within A Language-Experience Individualized Reading Program Effectively Teach Reading Skills, Trudy N. Rodine
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a trial program of reading skill instruction using a gaming approach within a language-experience individualized program. The study reviewed the literature on language-writing-reading development and thereupon sought to translate the identified theoretical procedure into a working pattern which would achieve specific skill building objectives with a selected group of eight or nine year old children.
Pre--test and post-test diagnostic information influenced both the program development and its evaluation.

A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks
A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to obtain some statistical evidence concerning the effects of a reading program for high school students rated as reluctant readers on their reading habits and attitudes. The initial problem which motivated the study was that assignments to read novels were resisted by this group. The students can read, but do not.
The hypothesis is that if students are given a program with books of 200 pages or less that have in the content some universalities that will satisfy the adult interests of students, attitudes about reading will change and there will be an improvement …

A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders
All Master's Theses
Children come to school speaking the language of their speech community. For some children, the language in their speech community is a variety of English that differs from standard English or what may be called "school English." These children may experience great difficulties in speaking standard English. This problem is one of social class dialect rather than regional language variation. The purpose of this study is to describe certain characteristics in which the language of a class of third grade Negro children differs from standard English.

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
An examination of the grade-equivalent scores attained in vocabulary and reading comprehension by third-grade pupils at Hudson Community School on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills over the preceding four-year period revealed that many of the pupils were seriously retarded in reading. Thirty-one per cent of these pupils scored one or more years below the norm for Iowa third-grade pupils in vocabulary, and the same level of retardation was true in reading comprehension for twenty-seven per cent of these pupils.
Most of these pupils had been taught beginning reading …

An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
Graduate Student Research Papers
Subordination is not Mt. Everest, but neither is it a molehill which can be covered in one easy step, and this is what our textbooks try to do. Unfortunately, there is no single easy way to teach the use of subordination, and this paper cannot offer any positive remedy for the inadequacies of our college handbooks. It will, however, discuss the varieties of opinions about the subject, explore several possible approaches, and offer some suggestions for a changed method of teaching subordination to our students.
Literary Study And Its Tradition: A Handbook Guide For Graduate Students In English., James Sebree Loveall
Literary Study And Its Tradition: A Handbook Guide For Graduate Students In English., James Sebree Loveall
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Every serious student of English, no matter how many years separate him from the M.A. or Ph. D. degrees, must develop to a high degree the essential quality of independence which allows him to pursue investigation in his subject more or less on his own. He cannot continue to bother librarians for every specific source of information which he way need in pursuit of his assigned or self-imposed tasks either in class or out. He should know his way around the area of bibliography--the earlier in his academic career, the better. Surely his first ventures in this direction should not …
