Approaching A Listening And Speaking Skills Gap For Some Learners In The Adult Ell Classroom, Johanna K. Steinruieck

Theses and Graduate Projects

Some adult English language learners (AELLs) have weak English listening and speaking skills in relation to their reading and writing literacy skills. Little information about this discrepancy is available to teachers of AELLs. The purpose of this project was to learn what research exists on the topic and find hands-on strategies to address it in the AELL classroom. Methods included an extended literature review and a survey of AELL teachers in two upper-Midwest urban Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs. Studies of college and university students who are learners of English as a second language (ESL), show that listening and speaking …

Integration Of English And Social Studies, Craig Jeppson, Kasie Payne Jan 2016

Integration Of English And Social Studies, Craig Jeppson, Kasie Payne

The Utah English Journal

One day while eating lunch in the faculty lounge, Kasie commented on a lesson that her students had learned in Craig’s class. As we started to compare notes, it occurred to us that we shared a lot of students. Over the course of that year, we continued to share thoughts, lessons, war stories and even engaged in a little competitive banter. What became increasingly clear was that our classes complemented each other. Craig could guide students to answer content-related geography questions such as: “How can countries grow economically and sustainably?”, “Why do people fight?”, and “How does the physical environment …

Making The "Moves" More "Modal", Thomas Henry Jan 2016

Making The "Moves" More "Modal", Thomas Henry

The Utah English Journal

We live in a multimodal world. Almost every piece of information that we receive on computers and mobile devices is multimodal. For those new to this term, multimodality refers to multiple modes of communication: the textual, the visual, the written, the aural/oral, and the gestural (Kress, 2000). Although seemingly appearing in isolation, these modalities are often expressed in pairs simultaneously. For instance, pictures may include text, videos often include audio, and even speakers and actors use gestures in their performances. In everyday online communication via Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter, we convey and respond to both textual and visual information working …

Examining The Role Of Corrective Feedback On Learners' Modified Output Of The Spanish Past Tense In Face-To-Face And Telecollaboration Contexts, Arnaldo Robles

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) there has been a demand for further research to look into how corrective feedback (CF) can aid adult second language (L2) learners’ language performance and development. More specifically, to what degree elicitations with prompts (i.e., a form of explicit correct feedback) can affect the modified output of adult learners of Spanish during task performance. Additionally, how face-to-face and telecollaboration environments might play a role in learner’s modified output. Therefore, this dissertation study examines the effects of elicitations with prompts by measuring learners’ modified output in producing the Spanish past tense – the …

The Frequency Of The Passive Voice In Freshman Academic Books, Basma Moreb Jan 2016

The Frequency Of The Passive Voice In Freshman Academic Books, Basma Moreb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of passive voice has long been an area of difficulty for English learners. Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman (2015) noted that it is learning when to use the English passive that presents the greatest long-term challenge to ESL/EFL students (p. 352). Because textbooks are a source of language input for English learners, this study investigated the frequency of passive voice verbs in samples from four academic textbooks in courses commonly taken by freshmen. The study also examined whether there are significant differences between the frequencies by textbook. The data was collected from four General Education Plan (GEP) subject textbooks used …

Linguistic Cohesion In Middle-School Texts: A Comparison Of Logical Connectives Usage In Science And Social Studies Textbooks, Diego Román, Allison Briceño, Hannah Rhode, Stephanie Hironka

Faculty Publications

Learning from textbooks is challenging because students must understand novel concepts while also comprehending the language used to convey those concepts. In the domain of science, one posited reason for the perceived difficulty in the reading comprehension of science texts is the low frequency of logical connectives (words that signal relationships between sentences and ideas). To test this claim and discuss its potential effects on the reading comprehension of texts used at the middle school level, this study measured whether the usage of logical connectives (e.g., therefore, so) differed between science and social studies textbooks. Our findings from a large …

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a virtual wave of studies investigating influences of African American English on academic achievement. Many of these studies have taken a sociolinguistic stance citing language stratification and low perception of the language as causes for the success and failures of these students. Others have suggested that the language used in family and community settings are not congruent with the academic language in school. In this study, I investigated the influences of African American English on reading achievement from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study analyzed the oral language, linguistics, and the cognitive processing behaviors of African American students …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Interrogative sentences are one form of verbal communication commonly used in classroom interaction. This type of sentence should be synchronized with its nonverbal elements. It is believed that verbal communication accompanied by appropriate nonverbal elements provides the basis for developing positive thinking patterns and students’ behavior, especially among first-grade primary school students. Therefore, teachers’ ability to synchronize interrogative sentences with their nonverbal elements is essential. Such a skill helps teachers enhance students’ self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Furthermore, it can establish positive interpersonal relationships between teachers and students. Hence, teachers, as one of the key factors determining the success of …
