Probably no major event has provoked more divergent reports and opinions than the Spanish Civil war. To attempt to reach a basis of fact in the early events of the war upon which to build future opinion, to remove the aloud of propaganda hanging over the events of the war in order that they might be more understandable was the desire of the author. To do this best, current weekly magazines which did not dwell upon the actual maneuvers of the war, but attempted to estimate the significance of the events, were chosen. All copies of the Milwaukee Leader were examined from July 18, 1936 to August 1, 1937, in an effort to determine how this daily paper handled stories of the Spanish Civil War during the first twelve months of civil repercussion. Not every edition of the Leader carried war stories, but every issue containing war news was noted, the column length measured in inches, and a comparative chart graphed indicating relation­ ship between the amount of straight news, pictures and editorials. Since it was believed that the study of the editorial policies of a paper, removed from the metropolitan field and thriving in a community of 28,000 people, would advance knowledge concerning the small daily field, the following thesis was written.

A comparison was made of editorial space devoted to national, state and city issues.

It is also the aim or this work to point out the gradual changing of a daily from a strictly party organ to an "on-the-fence" publication.

Each issue of the New York Herald Tribune, from Aug. 1, 1936 to Aug. 1, 1937, was consulted. The length and position of each war story was noted, together with display in the headline or pictures accompanying the article. Attention was paid to the dateline, the source and authority, and the channels through which the story was sent -- since news fr om a strictly censored bureau is not usually as reliable as that from open cities.
