Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined quantitative content analysis with qualitative interviews to uncover both coverage patterns and the contextual factors shaping them. The codebook for content analysis was developed from existing literature and grounded in media framing theory, drawing on the works of Goffman, Entman, Iyengar, Tuchman, and Van Zoonen. JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
Over the past decade, news consumption has increasingly shifted from websites to social media, leading to a significant decline in advertising revenues for online news outlets. This shift presents a serious challenge for small-scale local media in Indonesia, which typically operate with limited financial and human resources. This study explores how Beritabali.com, a local news outlet, responds to these challenges by addressing three central questions: why it produces content for social media, how it adapts to the social media ecosystem, and what implications arise from this transformation. Drawing on the theory of deep mediatization and employing a qualitative methodology …

A growing body of scholarship on AI-generated news has examined its impact on various outcomes. However, less attention has been paid to the actual implementation of AI-generated news sites and their effectiveness on civic consequences. This study examines the effects of an AI-generated, community-centered, nonprofit news site on civic outcomes such as trust in nonprofit organizations, trust in AI-generated news, social capital, and civic engagement. Data was collected from participants at a large southeastern university who visited the AI-generated news site over a four-week period and responded to a series of open-ended questions weekly. Influences Of The Western Press On News Framing Of Global Events In Developing Countries: Examining Covid-19 And Climate Coverage In A Bangladeshi News Organization, Arif Md Tareque Habib
Communication ETDs
This study shows that a small number of Western news organizations (e.g., Reuters, The New York Times) may influence how local news organizations in developing countries frame global crises and that this influence may lead local news organizations to ignore locally relevant aspects of those crises. To test this thesis, two studies were conducted on the coverage of two crises -- COVID-19 and climate change -- by a news organization in Bangladesh, a developing country in South Asia. The news organization, www.bdnews24.com, serves both as a news agency or news supplier for local newspapers and an online newspaper for users. …

Generative Ai And Journalism: Hype, The Always Already New, Hype, And Directions For Scholarly Imagination, Nik Usher
Communication: Faculty Scholarship
This essay pushes against hype about generative AI in both journalism and journalism scholarship. Emergent questions around the black box nature of AI, concerns about information disorder, and problems with the theft of intellectual property are recontextualized with a new focus – one that demands scholars think outside of the newsroom, center the natural and the cultural elements of journalism, and ultimately, remain critical about the always already new of new technologies and powerful companies looking to devalue human labor. A warning is issued about generative AI and journalism more generally, pushing us to study the importance of remembering unequal …

Individual Determinants Of Premium Content Subscription Decisions In Kenya: A Case Of Nation Media Group, Lisa Wagethi Kamau
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
The transformation in the media industry from traditional platforms of TV, radio and print to digital media platforms had necessitated a shift in business models. Traditionally, media organizations depended on circulation and advertising to generate revenues and fund their journalism, however, the revenues from these models have been dwindling, leading to massive layoffs and company closures. Many media organizations are now adopting the subscription model as a possible revenue earner, but this move has been difficult to implement. The main challenge facing the news subscription business model is that audiences have become used to free news content on the internet …

As calls for media literacy in formal and informal learning spaces continue to grow, educators’ understanding of media literacies and their purposes remains complex. In 2021, the authors of this paper led a multi-methods research project on media literacy education in the United States, focusing on impact and equity. In response, our research team developed a field guide that maps out equitable media literacy practices for classrooms and communities. In this study, we detail the findings from 11 …
