The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg Jun 1929

The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg

Bachelors’ Theses

The business of producing house organs is intimately a part of advertising and is precariously linked up with the problem of salesmanship. More generously house organs are the consolidated specialized effort of producing the wide spread use of an advertised product. It is well to consider the construction of this widely misunderstood term involving direct advertising, from the foundation of advertising in general.

Advertising is an art older than history, though in its present· forms it is rather recent. The newest of all its developments, of course, is that phase in which we are most interested since it involves the …

Many Authors And Writers Have Been Developed In Some Phase Of Journalistic Work, Margaret Baleen May 1929

Many Authors And Writers Have Been Developed In Some Phase Of Journalistic Work, Margaret Baleen

Bachelors’ Theses

A university professor in characterizing journalists said,"I have always considered the journalists the alert of the alert. Perhaps there may be some arguments against this statement by those engaged in other professions but the fa.ct remains that a journalist to be successful must be one vitally interested in every phase of life and ¢ust have a true sense of news values in discovering the interesting facts in society as he sees it. He must know what will hold the interest of his readers and must be ready at any time to obtain that bit of news which rill interest his …

American Women In The Field Of Journalism, Dorothy Duffy Jun 1928

American Women In The Field Of Journalism, Dorothy Duffy

Bachelors’ Theses

The status of women in the field of Journalism today would scarcely indicate the long struggle and many rebuffs the early women writers were forced to undergo before they were accepted in the high position which women now occupy in the sphere of newspaper writing.

Ford Madox Ford: A Conscious Artist, J. Wallace Carroll Jan 1928

Ford Madox Ford: A Conscious Artist, J. Wallace Carroll

Bachelors’ Theses

He had often said that he would never write a worthwhile novel until he was forty, and that prediction proved quite true. Perhaps he had correctly estimated his own ability, or perhaps he had failed to put forth his best efforts merely to keep faith with his judgment. Such a course of action would be entirely consistent with the character of the conscious artist who is Ford Madox Ford.

Sensational Versus Conservative Makeup In Newpapers, Ruth Elizabeth O'Brien Jun 1927

Sensational Versus Conservative Makeup In Newpapers, Ruth Elizabeth O'Brien

Bachelors’ Theses

Sensational and conservative newspaper makeup presents a problem of vital interest to the age we are living. We are faced with the difficulty of placing before the public, stalking headlines; or on the contrary merely a cut and dried statement of facts. Of these two the former would result in the "headline readers"; while the latter would result in the well read public - those who would read the papers at all.

Appropriate Copy -- A Necessity Of Good Advertising, Marion Purtell Jun 1927

Appropriate Copy -- A Necessity Of Good Advertising, Marion Purtell

Bachelors’ Theses

One word may make or mar an advertisement- such is the power of the written word, such the effect of the word on the human mind that often between the use of the correct appropriate, word and the ill-chosen carelessly- written word there rests the difference between the making of a sale and the losing of a customer.

Advertising: A Necessity To Railroad Progress, Arabella Warren Jun 1927

Advertising: A Necessity To Railroad Progress, Arabella Warren

Bachelors’ Theses

The railroads of the United States, foremost in the internal development of the country, have had to overcome a greater sentiment of animosity on the part of the public than have any other large corporations. They have combated this commercial opposition through the channels of advertising and publicity which have led them out into the realms of Prosperity.

Women In George Eliot's Novels, Rose G. Biller Jun 1927

Women In George Eliot's Novels, Rose G. Biller

Bachelors’ Theses

It is given to us, to aid our inadequate intellects, that we may understand not only by simple comprehension of a statement of fact, but by the process of comparison and contrast. Thus, to plumb the depths of George Eliot's peculiar greatness, we compare and contrast her to Charles Dickens. She is everything that he is not. Whereas he had the utmost power of rendering the external traits of people, she had the utmost power of rendering their internal traits, their psychological characters, their conceptions of life, and their emotions. Charles Dickens takes the human creature and portrays his behavior; …
